On the generalized geometry of almost abelian solvmanifolds

We study left-invariant generalized complex structures on almost abelian Lie groups $G_A$ with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}_A=\mathbb{R} e_0\ltimes_A\mathfrak{h}$, where $\mathfrak{h}$ is an abelian ideal of codimension one, and on their compact quotients. First, when $A$ is diagonalizable over $\mathbb{R}$, we characterize all admissible types by pairings of its eigenvalues and characterize the structures admitting a closed invariant pure-spinor generator. For general $A$, we obtain Jordan-theoretic type bounds and a construction using a complex quotient and a symplectic ideal. Finally, in dimension six, we establish nonexistence results and give explicit intermediate-type constructions.

Robustness of topological entropy under small area deformations

In this paper, we establish a new type of stability phenomenon for the topological entropy of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of closed surfaces. For a closed surface endowed with an area form $(\Sigma,\omega)$ and a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism $\phi$ of $(\Sigma,\omega)$, we show that for every $\varepsilon>0$ there exists $A=A(\phi,\varepsilon)>0$ such that \[ h_{\mathrm{top}}(\phi') > h_{\mathrm{top}}(\phi)-\varepsilon \] for every Hamiltonian diffeomorphism $\phi'$ obtained from $\phi$ by a deformation supported in a disjoint union of disks, each of area less than $A$. In particular, if $h_{\mathrm{top}}(\phi)>0$, then $\phi$ cannot be made to have zero entropy by an area-preserving deformation supported in disks of small area. This follows from the new braid stability result established in this paper with respect to the spectral distance recently introduced by Connery-Grigg.

Toric Constructions via Integral Transversality

In the Delzant world, symplectic toric manifolds correspond to unimodular polytopes, and unimodularity-preserving polytope constructions correspond to geometric constructions on the manifold side. We treat, in a unified framework, constructions such as taking a face, taking a slice, and polytope intersections, identifying each with its geometric counterpart, namely invariant submanifolds, symplectic reduction, and reduction of a product (a full list appears in Table 1). The key tool is "integral transversality", a lattice-refined transversality condition that provides a uniform criterion for preserving unimodularity, ensuring smoothness on the manifold side. To keep every construction within a single ambient vector space – the dual of the Lie algebra of a fixed torus – we allow the torus actions involved to have nontrivial, but connected kernels.

Abundance of affine algebraic structures on stabilized cotangent bundles of surfaces

We show that for any $g\geq2$, there exist uncountably many non-isomorphic smooth affine threefolds that are Stein deformation equivalent to $T^\ast\Sigma_g\times\mathbb{C}$, the product of the cotangent bundle of a genus $g$ oriented surface with the complex plane, answering a question of Ivan Smith. In fact, we prove that our family of smooth affine threefolds is parametrized by a $(6g-7)$-dimensional complex orbifold.

GIT for root stacks and 3d mirror symmetry

Using window theory, Bodzenta–Donovan showed that the derived category of a root stack $\sqrt[n]{X/D}$ has a $2n$-periodic $2$-term semiorthogonal decomposition. We define a categorical generalization of the root stack construction and interpret this as a pullback on the B-side of the 3d mirror symmetry equivalence of Gammage–Hilburn–Mazel-Gee. We analyze this pullback using categorical representation theoretic results of Ben-Zvi–Francis–Nadler and Ben-Zvi–Nadler–Preygel applied to SODs. We also show that the pullback is equivalent to a pushforward of perverse schobers on the A-side, allowing us to deduce periodicity from a simple decomposition of an A-side Lagrangian skeleton. Additionally, we adapt the construction of Bodzenta–Donovan to a new GIT problem, which yields an embedding of Coh($\sqrt[m]{X/D}$) into Coh($\sqrt[n]{X/D}$) for $m<n$ coprime, and prove $2n$-periodicity of the resulting $2$-term SOD.

Poisson blow-ups and the adjoint quotient

We leverage Polishchuk's Poisson blow-up criterion in the context of algebro-geometric integrable systems. In more detail, one may associate an integrable system $\tau:\mathfrak{X}\longrightarrow\mathfrak{B}$ to each affine Poisson scheme $\mathfrak{X}$ over $\mathbb{C}$. We prove that the blow-ups of $\mathfrak{X}$ along fibers of $\tau$ are Poisson schemes occurring in a family $\widetilde{\mathfrak{X}\times\mathfrak{B}}\longrightarrow\mathfrak{B}$, where $\widetilde{\mathfrak{X}\times\mathfrak{B}}$ is itself a Poisson scheme. This result is subsequently specialized to the adjoint quotient $\tau:\mathfrak{g}\longrightarrow\mathfrak{g}/\!/G=:\mathfrak{c}$ of a finite-dimensional complex semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ with integrating algebraic group $G$. We show that the family $\widetilde{\mathfrak{g}\times\mathfrak{c}}\longrightarrow\mathfrak{c}$ is flat, conical, and equipped with a canonical Poisson Hamiltonian $G$-variety structure. We also obtain Poisson-geometric results on the fibers of this family, which are blow-ups of $\mathfrak{g}$ along regular adjoint orbit closures.

Ziggurats, taut foliations, and contact structures

We study the geography of taut foliations on compact $3$-manifolds with toroidal boundary components. The central object of our work is the set of boundary multislopes realized by foliations transverse to a fixed flow on such a manifold. We prove that these sets exhibit remarkable structural properties (rationality, rigidity, and convexity) which motivate the name ziggurats. Our main tool, of independent interest, is a two-way correspondence between foliations and contact structures on $3$-manifolds with boundary: we generalize the Eliashberg-Thurston theorem, which produces pairs of positive and negative contact structures from foliations, and a construction of the first author, which builds foliations from such contact pairs. Using both directions of this correspondence, we bring contact-geometric methods to bear on the architecture of ziggurats.

Taut foliations through a contact lens

This survey explores the rich interplay between (taut) foliations and (tight) contact structures in dimension three, highlighting recent work of the author. We outline a new method for constructing taut foliations from suitable pairs of contact structures, and discuss some applications and future research directions. In particular, we give a brief account of work in progress with Jonathan Zung on ziggurats for taut foliations transverse to pseudo-Anosov flows, and we propose a (mostly speculative) contact perspective on the $L$-space conjecture.

Symplectic Tiling Billiards on Complete Affine Tori

In 2023, Richard Schwartz introduced a new dynamical system which is a marriage of two types of familiar billiards, tiling billiards and symplectic billiards. In this paper we investigate this dynamical system played on tilings of the plane which arise from non-Euclidean geometries on the torus. We review the affine analogue of the flat conformal structures on the torus through the work of Oliver Baues and William Goldman, and define an open subset of this deformation space corresponding to markings of complete affine tilings of the plane. We make this definition precise, and provide algebraic conditions on the symmetries of the tiling to define it. We then analyze the dynamics of symplectic tiling billiards played on these types of tilings and investigate the long-term dynamics of the system to prove a stability result concerning divergent trajectories. The divergence is defined in terms of geometric invariants arising from the tiling symmetry group. We argue that in some sense this divergence is a consequence of the tiles of a non-Euclidean tiling becoming 'thin' as one moves far away in the tiling. To do so we introduce a notion of thinness that is well adapted to the non-Euclidean affine tilings.

Reduction of symmetric time-dependent Hamiltonian systems I: presymplectic principal $\mathbb{R}$-bundles

The reduction of mechanical presymplectic structures and its application to the reduction of time-dependent Hamiltonian systems were developed in a recent paper (Gutiérrez Sagredo et al, 2025). This approach overcomes some limitations of the original Albert reduction (Albert, 1989). In this paper we will describe the reduction of time-dependent Hamiltonian systems using the extended formalism. This process combines cotangent bundle reduction with reduction of presymplectic structures of corank 1 and 2. These results generalize previous work (Lacirasella et al, 2012), in the same direction. Several examples will be presented to illustrate the theory from this new perspective.

Within this framework, we formulate the augmented star product and investigate the associated augmented star exponentials. We further demonstrate several applications of these constructions to special functions and to problems arising in quantum physics.

Obstruction to Symplectic Embeddings between Toric Domains

We study symplectic embeddings between four-dimensional toric domains using embedded contact homology. Extending Hutchings' criterion for embeddings between convex toric domains, we obtain obstructions for embeddings from convex toric domains into concave toric domains, from semi-weakly convex toric domains into convex toric domains, and from concave toric domains into concave toric domains. The obstructions are formulated in terms of factorizations of convex, concave, and semi-weakly convex generators together with combinatorial constraints relating their ECH indices and actions. As applications, we recover the sharp obstruction for symplectic embeddings of a polydisk into a union of cylinders, and obtain sharp results for embeddings of certain quadrilateral toric domains into balls and ellipsoids. We also show that these obstructions are in some cases strictly stronger than those coming only from ECH capacities.

A proof of the Arnold-Givental conjecture

We prove the Arnold-Givental conjecture in full generality: given a closed symplectic manifold $(X, \omega)$, an anti-symplectic involution $\tau_X: X \to X$ with fixed point set $L={\rm Fix}(\tau_X)$, and a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism $\phi: X \to X$ such that $\phi(L)$ intersects transversely with $L$, the following inequality holds: \[ \# \big( \phi(L) \cap L \big) \geq {\mathrm dim}_{{\mathbb F}_2} H_*(L; {\mathbb F}_2).\] The proof combines the methods of integral Floer theory of the first and fourth authors, a reduction to Hamiltonian Floer cohomology due to Lu, and a new idea related to localization in a $\mathbb Z/2$-equivariant Floer theory tailored to the problem.

On Auroux's Luttinger-surgery uniqueness question

We construct simply connected integral symplectic four-manifolds forming an exotic pair, with equal values of $c_1^2$, $c_2$, $c_1\mathbin{\cdot}[\omega]$, and $[\omega]^2$, but with symplectic Kodaira dimensions $-\infty$ and $2$. Since symplectic Kodaira dimension is invariant under Luttinger surgery, the two manifolds are not Luttinger-surgery equivalent. This gives a negative answer to Auroux's uniqueness question.

Beauville–Bogomolov–Fujiki positivity and Moishezonness of complex symplectic manifolds in Fujiki class $\mathscr C$

Motivated by the principle that positivity of the Beauville–Bogomolov–Fujiki (BBF) form controls the geometry of hyperkähler manifolds, we study BBF positivity from the perspective of bimeromorphic geometry, focusing on its relation to the Moishezonness of hyperfujiki manifolds (natural bimeromorphic analogues of hyperkähler manifolds). We prove that any Moishezon hyperfujiki manifold carries a big line bundle with positive BBF square. We also prove that the existence of a BBF-positive integral $(1,1)$-class implies Moishezonness for hyperfujiki $4$-folds and, more generally, for hyperfujiki $2n$-folds under a weak Kähler minimal-model condition. The proof mainly uses the theory of primitive symplectic varieties developed by B. Bakker–C. Lehn, a construction of small bimeromorphic models for certain $K$-trivial manifolds by I. Biswas–J. Cao–S. Dumitrescu–H. Guenancia, and the theory of pull-backs of reflexive differential forms established by S. Kebekus–C. Schnell. As an application, we give a Hodge-theoretic description of the Moishezon locus in certain smooth families by combining this criterion with the period theory developed by B. Anthes–A. Cattaneo–S. Rollenske–A. Tomassini.

We also discuss how the conjectural symplectic Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau inequality implies that our results are close to being optimal.

A Schrödinger characterization of the oscillator semigroup

The oscillator (or metaplectic) semigroup is classically defined as the two-fold cover of the semigroup of positive complex symplectic matrices. Although geometrically precise, this definition does not provide an intrinsic operator-theoretic characterization of the bounded operators corresponding to positive symplectic matrices. This is in contrast with the real metaplectic group, whose relation with the symplectic group can be expressed directly in terms of the Schrödinger representation of the Heisenberg group through its intertwining property. In the complex setting, such a relation appears in the existing literature mainly in infinitesimal form or on suitable classes of Gaussian functions. In this work we prove that the (complexified) Schrödinger intertwining relation holds for every function in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$. The main point is the converse statement: if an arbitrary complex symplectic matrix $S$ admits a nonzero bounded operator on $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$ satisfying this intertwining relation, then $S$ is necessarily positive and the operator coincides, up to a nonzero scalar, with the corresponding element of the oscillator semigroup. Consequently, positive complex symplectic matrices are exactly those admitting a nonzero bounded Schrödinger intertwiner, and the associated intertwining space is one-dimensional. This provides a Schrödinger-representation characterization of the oscillator semigroup, parallel to the classical one for the real metaplectic group.

Log MMP Constraints on Curves with Cuspidal Singularities

Let $X$ be a smooth projective surface and let $C\subset X$ be a unicuspidal rational curve with one Puiseux pair $(p,q)$. We use the log minimal model program to prove a sharp upper bound on the self-intersection of $C$ conjectured by Weimin Chen in [C, Conjecture 1.15] in the course of his study of contact structures and their symplectic fillings. We then extend this argument to rational curves with arbitrary cuspidal singularities and compare the resulting algebraic bounds with the symplectic bounds of Golla and Starkston [GS]. Finally, we prove that there is no plane curve of degree $102$ and genus $10$ with a $(36,289)$-cusp, answering a question of Evans [E, Remark 7.3.5] about algebraic curves associated with the final post-Fibonacci step of the McDuff-Schlenk staircase.

Limits of quantization from mixed to real polarizations on toric varieties

Let $(M, \omega, J)$ be a $2n$-dimensional toric variety determined by a Delzant polytope $P$, whose $T^{n}$-symmetry determines a real polarization $\mathcal{P}_{\mathbb{R}}$. Let $K \subset T^{n}$ be a subtorus. By a construction due to Leung and the first author, the $K$-action induces a mixed polarization $\mathcal{P}_{K}$. This paper investigates the relationship between the quantum Hilbert spaces $\mathcal{H}_{K}$ and $\mathcal{H}_{\mathbb{R}}$ associated with the polarizations $\mathcal{P}_{K}$ and $\mathcal{P}_{\mathbb{R}}$. Starting from $\mathcal{P}_{K}$, we use an imaginary-time flow to construct a one-parameter family of mixed polarizations $\mathcal{P}_{K,t}$ on $M$ interpolating between $\mathcal{P}_{K}$ and $\mathcal{P}_{\mathbb{R}}$, with $\mathcal{P}_{K,0}=\mathcal{P}_{K}$ and $\lim_{t\to\infty}\mathcal{P}_{K,t}=\mathcal{P}_{\mathbb{R}}$. For the corresponding quantum Hilbert spaces $\mathcal{H}_{K,t}$, we lift the imaginary-time flow to the prequantum line bundle to obtain a $T^{n}$-equivariant isomorphism $\mathcal{H}_{K}\cong\mathcal{H}_{K,t}$. We finally show that $\mathcal{H}_{K,t}$ converges to $\mathcal{H}_{\mathbb{R}}$ as $t\to\infty$.

$b^k$-Symplectic Manifolds and $[Q,R]=0$

We study the geometric quantization of $b^k$-symplectic manifolds using the integrability of Lie algebroids. Using a groupoid index, we define a quantization for $b^k$-symplectic manifolds whose singular locus is a normal crossing divisor and which carry a Hamiltonian action of a compact connected Lie group, generalizing Guillemin–Miranda–Weitsman in a few directions. Firstly, we show this quantization is the index of a $\spinc$-Dirac operator, answering a question of theirs. In particular, it is a finite-dimensional virtual representation for every $k$, whereas their formal quantization is infinite-dimensional when the modular degrees are even. Secondly, our symplectic form can have singularities along hypersurfaces which can have normal crossings. Finally, we prove that quantization commutes with reduction for the Hamiltonian action of a possibly non-abelian compact connected Lie group, when the modular degrees are odd. In the case when the modular degrees are not odd, we give an example when $[Q,R]=0$ fails.

Algebraically trivial tropical cycles are smash-nilpotent

We prove that if $Z$ is a tropical cycle in a tropical variety $Y$ which is algebraically trivial, then for $k\gg1$ sufficiently large, $k!\cdot Z^k\subset Y^k$ is rationally trivial. The proof involves explicitly constructing a rational equivalence $k!\cdot(p-q)^k\sim0$ in the product $C^k$, where $p$ and $q$ are any points on $C$. We use this to formulate a tropical version of Voevodsky's conjecture, provide explicit examples, and comment on potential applications to symplectic geometry.

Mori theory and symplectic reduction for polygons and quivers

We investigate the birational geometry of moduli spaces of polygons and quivers, emphasizing the link between Mori theory and symplectic reduction. On the additive side we relate Mori models of $Bl_{n-1}\mathbb{P}^{n-3}$ with GIT quotients of configurations of points on $\mathbb{P}^1$, Hassett–GIT spaces, parabolic quotients with fixed trivial bundle, quiver moduli spaces, and additive polygon spaces. On the multiplicative side we relate Mori models of $Bl_n\mathbb{P}^{n-3}$ with moduli spaces of rank two parabolic bundles with trivial determinant, multiplicative polygons, multiplicative configurations, and compact multiplicative quiver quotients. In this way, the Mori chamber decompositions are matched with wall-crossing for the corresponding additive and multiplicative symplectic quotients. Total Inner Products and Cyclic Chern-Simons Forms

We introduce the notion of a total inner product on an $A_\infty$-algebra, and a cyclic Chern-Simons form associated to a topologically nilpotent element. The total inner product applied to the cyclic Chern-Simons form gives a superpotential function that is gauge invariant on solutions of the Maurer-Cartan equation known as bounding cochains. The derivative of the superpotential is computed. The definition of total inner product replaces strict symmetries that appear in previous notions of homotopy inner products with symmetries up to an infinite family of coherent homotopies. We show how to recover previous notions of homotopy inner products as special cases of total inner products. Total inner products are designed to facilitate the definition of descendent open Gromov-Witten invariants. The definitions of the total inner product and the cyclic Chern-Simons form use the total complex of cyclic codifferential forms, which gives a chain model for cyclic homology. We give explicit formulas for homotopy equivalences with other known models. We discuss also the notion of an $\infty$-trace, which arises from Connes' cyclic complex, and the associated $\infty$-modulus, which gives another gauge-invariant function on bounding cochains. In open Gromov-Witten theory, the $\infty$-modulus is used to normalize the bounding cochains to which the superpotential is applied. We develop our definitions for general curved Banach $A_\infty$-algebras, and give both unital and non-unital versions of the main results. In the unital setting, we work with weak bounding cochains, solutions of an inhomogeneous Maurer-Cartan equation involving the unit. Weak bounding cochains arise in the open Gromov-Witten theory of Lagrangian submanifolds with non-vanishing Maslov class. The derivative of the superpotential at a weak bounding cochain is related to the derivative of the $\infty$-modulus.
