Arithmetic Siegel–Weil formula on the product of modular curves

Smoothness criterion for Fano orbifolds and bases of Lagrangian fibrations

We establish a smoothness criterion for Fano varieties with quotient singularities. As an application, we show that if $X\to B$ is a Lagrangian fibration from a compact hyper-Kähler manifold and $B$ has quotient singularities, then $B$ is a projective space.

A prismatic Riemann-Hilbert correspondence

We study the category of constructible $p$-Kummer-étale sheaves on the log adic generic fiber $(\mathrm{X},\mathcal{M}_{\mathrm{D}})_\eta$ for the stratification induced by a horizontal normal crossings divisor $\mathrm{D}$, showing that it is antiequivalent to a category of finitely generated unit Laurent crystals on the log prismatic site. We give a local description of finitely generated unit crystals on a framed log affine in terms of $(\varphi,\Gamma)$-modules, and show pushforward compatibility for strict log smooth proper morphisms.

Topological recursion for spin enumeration of hypermaps

We establish topological recursion for the spin enumeration of hypermaps, or, in the dual language, spin dessins d'enfants. This problem has remarkable features distinguishing it from other applications of topological recursion to enumerative combinatorics. First, the spectral curve is elliptic rather than rational, as in most cases studied before. Second, it contains degenerate ramification points, and one has to apply a version of degenerate topological recursion. Finally, the meromorphic correlator differentials have "moving" poles on the antidiagonals between pairs of distinct arguments, and one has to adjust the loop equations to this kind of degeneracy as well. The computations involve concepts of different kinds, such as BKP integrability, Gaussian integrals, the x-y swap, and symplectic duality.

Deformations of Holomorphic $p$-Contact Structures

We investigate the notion of holomorphic $p$-contact structure, that we introduced recently in the scalar case with H. Kasuya and L. Ugarte and in the line-bundle case with K. Broder, in the context of a holomorphic family of compact complex manifolds equipped with a holomorphic family of holomorphic line bundles. Firstly, we show that the existence of a holomorphic $p$-contact structure is deformation-open when a non-jumping assumption is made on the $\bar\partial$-cohomology of bidegree $(p,\,0)$. This ought to become a source of further examples of holomorphic $p$-contact manifolds. Secondly, we obtain a Berndtsson-type (semi-)positivity result for the holomorphic vector bundle over the base induced, as a direct image, by the line bundle on the total space that supports the p-contact structures. Thirdly, we introduce a moduli space of relative holomorphic p-contact structures and we show that it is Hausdorff and open in a certain quotient topological space.

On the Structure of Radical Towers and their Parametrizations

Radical parametrizations describe algebraic varieties by means of nested radicals of polynomials, and their theory relies on three varieties associated with a parametrization, namely, the incidence, tower and radical varieties. In this paper we revisit this framework from a computational point of view and show that it is governed by the radical tower rather than by the particular parametrization. We prove that the tower variety depends only on the tower and that the incidence variety is always irreducible, so that no prime decomposition is needed. Moreover, we show how to replace a tower by an isomorphic one whose tower variety is defined by the equations of the tower, so that it can be computed without elimination. We introduce universal radical parametrizations and we use them to settle, under a natural hypothesis on the coefficients, an open case in the transformation of differential equations with radical coefficients into equations with rational coefficients. We show that radical subtowers form a lattice, which yields minimal radical parametrizations, and we give algorithms to compute them. We also prove that dominance between towers induces a unique dominant rational map between their tower varieties, through which unirationality is transferred. Finally, we study towers over subfields of $\mathbb{C}$ and, in the real case, relate the real points of the tower variety to the real domains of the associated parametrizations.

GCD and ABC inequalities for abelian varieties over function fields

We prove two height inequalities for rational points on abelian varieties over function fields of characteristic 0. The first is the GCD inequality, which shows that the height with respect to a closed subscheme of an abelian variety of codimension at least 2 is much smaller than the usual height function. This can be viewed as a compact and geometric analogue of a theorem of Levin. The second is a special case of the (geometric) abc conjecture proposed by Vojta, which compares the truncated counting function and the usual counting function. This is a compact analogue of a theorem of Guo, Nguyen, Sun and Wang, and also resolves a conjecture of Buium, which was only known for traceless abelian varieties or constant abelian varieties previously. The proofs of these inequalities follow a common three-step pattern: from microscopic local estimates to local estimates, and then to global estimates. Building on the canonical Xie-Yuan heights, we control discrete counting functions by continuous integrals of Betti forms. The main new tools are uniform Nevanlinna-type estimates for families of linear entire curves on abelian varieties; combined with covering arguments based on Besicovitch theory and averaging, these handle overlaps and gaps precisely.

Chow groups of symmetric products of projective space

We prove that the integral cycle class map for $\SP^d(\PP^n)$ is split injective, with finite cokernel annihilated by $d!$,and we determine the ranks of Chow groups for $\mathrm{SP}^d(\mathbb{P}^n)$. Compatible integral transfer retractions show that $\CH_q(\SP^d(\PP^n))$ stabilizes for $d\geq q$. An explicit nonalgebraic order two class persists under addition of points, producing a split cokernel summand even in the range $q\leq d$ and in the infinite symmetric product. For the smooth configuration open set, we identify the codimension two cokernel with third unramified cohomology and detect its ramification on a rational resolution. In contrast to addition, even multiplicities annihilate a nonzero Chow class.

The parity module of a matroid

We introduce the parity module of a matroid with coefficients in a field $\mathbb{k}$. When $\mathbb{k}$ has characteristic zero, we show that the parity module of a matroid is isomorphic to its intersection cohomology module, yielding a new intrinsic characterization of the latter. The structure and dimension of the parity module can vary depending on the characteristic, giving rise to characteristic-dependent generalizations of the Kazhdan-Lusztig and Z-polynomials of matroids. When the matroid is realizable over the complex numbers, the parity module is isomorphic to the hypercohomology of the parity sheaf supported on the arrangement Schubert variety of any such realization. We also introduce the notion of pure modules over any field $\mathbb{k}$ and show that they satisfy a matroid analogue of the Beilinson-Bernstein-Deligne-Gabber decomposition theorem: Every pure module over the graded Möbius algebra decomposes as a direct sum of shifts of the parity modules of matroids obtained by restricting to flats.

$\chi$-Independence for BPS Invariants of Warped Local Curves

A well-known conjecture of Toda's asserts that the BPS invariants associated to a Calabi–Yau threefold are independent of the chosen Euler characteristic. We answer the question in the affirmative for a certain class of local surfaces, which we call warped local curves. Along the way we show that the moduli stack of sheaves on a warped local curve can be written as the global critical locus of a function. We also show that the moduli stack of sheaves on a curve fibration over $\mathbb{A}^1$ is the global critical locus of a function.

Gaudin from Cherednik

Let $W$ be a complex reflection group and $X$ the De Concini-Procesi wonderful model of its reflection arrangement. Inside Etingof's sheaf of Cherednik algebras on $X$ we define a subsheaf generated by the Dunkl operators that extend the standard ones on the hyperplane complement. We conjecture that at $t=0$ the image of the logarithmic vector fields in a natural module over this subsheaf is the sheaf of Gaudin algebras on $X$ defined by Aguirre, extending a construction of Bonnafé and Rouquier from the hyperplane complement to $X$. We prove the conjecture for $W=S_{3}$.

Markman–Markushevich principle and Lagrangian fibrations on O'Grady six-manifolds

To any compact holomorphically symplectic manifold and a nef BBF-isotropic class we associate a quasi-projective variety called the Markman–Markushevich space which parametrises the Lagrangian fibrations with this isotropic class modulo Tate–Shafarevich twists. We give a systematic interpretation of known results about Tate–Shafarevich twists of Lagrangian fibrations using this space, employ it to obtain a conjectural result for the last deformation type for which such a result is not yet proposed, and make some first steps towards its proof. As a byproduct, we generalise the results of Kumar on existence Shioda–Inose partners for abelian surfaces to a slightly more general class of K3 surfaces, and associate a canonical K3 surface with transcendental lattice isometric to $U^2\oplus\langle-2\rangle^2$ to a smooth cubic surface with a choice of a Schläfli double-six. We also review some other approaches towards the construction of complete families of O'Grady six-manifolds with Lagrangian fibrations, and show how they may still be useful even though they do not quite work.

On the Topology of Fibers of Rational Functions

In 1988 Broughton proved that if a complex polynomial function on ${\mathbb C}^n$ is tame at infinity its fibers are homotopy equivalent to bouquets of some spheres. Since then several basic properties of polynomial functions were studied by many mathematicians in various situations. In this paper, we show some evidence for the possibility of extending Broughton's result to rational functions satisfying some tameness condition at infinity and the one at their points of indeterminacy. Specifically, assuming some conditions on a rational function on ${\mathbb C}^n$ we prove that the cohomology groups of a generic fiber of it are isomorphic to those of a bouquet of $S^1$ and some spheres. In the course of the proof, the theory of the nearby and vanishing cycle sheaves for meromorphic functions will play an essential role.

On deformations of foliated complex analytic structures III: Unfoldings

We study unfoldings of foliated complex analytic structures defined by locally free subsheaves of cotangent sheaves. We prove theorem of existence for unfoldings of foliated complex analytic structures defined by locally free subsheaves of cotangent sheaves for one-parameter families. We prove theorem of completeness for unfoldings of foliated complex analytic structures defined by locally free subsheaves of cotangent sheaves. We also present unfoldings of foliated nonsingular varieties defined by locally free subsheaves of cotangent sheaves in the language of functors of Artin rings which is the algebraic version of unfoldings of foliated complex analytic structures. We identify first-order unfoldings and obstructions.

The regular inverse Galois problem over fields avoiding a curve

Let $k_0$ be a field of characteristic $0$, and let $C/k_0$ be a smooth geometrically integral curve of positive genus with $C(k_0)=\varnothing$. We prove that the regular inverse Galois problem is solvable over every field existentially closed in the class of $k_0$-fields avoiding $C$, including the curve-excluding fields of Johnson and the author. To this end, we show that for every finite group $G$, there is a parameter variety over $\mathbb Q$ whose function field admits a regular realization of $G$ without adding points to $C$. Finally, we establish $\mathrm{RIGP}$ over the variety-excluding fields of Szachniewicz and the author, when the excluded variety is a locally closed subvariety of an abelian variety.

Maximum Likelihood Degrees via One-Edge Chordal Completion

The maximum likelihood degree of a Gaussian graphical model measures the algebraic complexity of its likelihood equations. This paper studies maximum likelihood degrees of Gaussian graphical models through chordal completion. When a graph becomes chordal after one missing edge is added, its maximum likelihood degree is determined by the maximal cliques and clique-tree separators containing that edge. This recovers Uhler's formula for complete bipartite graphs with one part of size two, and extends it to deleted-spine clique books, whose degree is unchanged when a page is thickened to a clique. For several fill edges, the same method gives a product formula when no clique or separator bag contains two fill edges. We also determine four classes of vertices at which clique blow-up preserves the degree. Two follow from known results, and two are established here.

Algebraically Integrable Smooth Convex Bodies

We prove that a convex body with $C^\infty$ boundary in an odd dimension $n\ge3$ is algebraically integrable if and only if it is an ellipsoid. This answers Arnold's problem for smooth convex bodies. Together with Vassiliev's even-dimensional nonexistence theorem, it gives the classification in every dimension $n\ge2$. More generally, in odd dimensions, a convex body with $C^\infty$ semialgebraic boundary is an ellipsoid whenever its section volume function satisfies a joint algebraic relation.

Arithmetic Visibility in Polygons: Curved Sight in the Art Gallery

In the classical art gallery problem, a guard sees a target when the segment joining them lies entirely within the polygon. We explore what changes when sight may bend along regular arcs on absolutely irreducible curves, but only those defined by primitive integer polynomials of total degree at most \(d\) and coefficient height at most \(H\). We call such curves admissible sight carriers. Arcs can dramatically improve sight. In a one-sided comb, no straight-line guard sees selected targets in two different teeth, yet a single central guard sees a chosen target in every tooth along parabolic carriers. Sight can also fail in two different ways. Geometrically, the polygon may block every sight arc of the allowed degree between two points. For instance, in an alternating comb, the number of guards needed for a row of targets spanning the comb grows linearly with the number of sides at each fixed degree, even for carriers with arbitrary real coefficients. Arithmetically, no admissible carrier may pass through the points at all. Even in the unit square, at fixed \(d\) and \(H\), the proportion of rational targets that must guard themselves tends to one as the height bound grows. An algebraic target may lie on no rational curve of degree at most \(d\), however large \(H\) is. Both failures can be overcome for finite target sets by allowing the degree and coefficient height to grow. We show that every finite set of algebraic targets in a rational polygon becomes visible from any rational interior guard, with explicit bounds. We also construct, for every \(d\), arbitrarily large Galois orbits in the unit square, all of projective height \(4^{d+1}\), whose points must each guard themselves at degree \(d\) for every \(H\). Yet at degree \(d+1\) and coefficient height one, a single guard sees the whole orbit along \(Z(Y-X^{d+1})\).

On the Arnold corank, the Zariski multiplicity, and the tangent Milnor fiber problems

In this article, we approach the Arnold corank problem posed by Arnold himself in 1975, which asks whether the corank of a holomorphic function is a topological invariant. Here, the corank of a holomorphic function is the corank of its Hessian matrix at 0, which is one of the most basic and fundamental invariants of a holomorphic function. Here, we prove the topological invariance of the corank mod 2. Consequently, we obtain another proof of the Arnold corank problem in dimension 3, which was recently proved by Fernandes, Jelonek, and the author of this article. We also prove that the corank is constant in a continuous family of holomorphic functions with isolated singularities and constant Milnor number. We also approach a conjecture recently posed by Budur, Fernández de Bobadilla, Lê, and Nguyen (2022), which states that if two germs of holomorphic functions are right topologically equivalent, then the Milnor fibers of their initial forms are homotopy equivalent. We prove that a (much) weaker version of this conjecture, which states that if two holomorphic functions are right topologically equivalent, then the Milnor fibers of their initial forms have the same Euler characteristic, is equivalent to the Zariski multiplicity conjecture for right topological equivalence. Some other results are also presented here. For instance, the multiplicity $> 2$ of generalized semi-Bireskorn-Pham hypersurfaces is an invariant for the right topological equivalence.

Remarks on Lattice Actions Corresponding to Automorphism Groups of Smooth Cubic Fourfolds

The automorphism groups of smooth cubic fourfolds over the complex numbers, together with actions on defining equations, are classified in previous works. In this paper, we complete the calculation of group actions on the primitive integral cohomology lattice for all of the $156$ families in the classification. We distinguish similar families, determine the remaining action-maximal cases, and use restriction to complete the list. We also determine the generic algebraic lattices for each family. The calculation depends mainly on OSCAR.jl.

Reversible Higgs Bundles

We study reversible Higgs bundles on a compact Riemann surface $\Sigma$ of genus $g\geq 2$, that is, $G$-Higgs bundles $(E,\Phi)$ with $(E,\Phi)\cong(E,-\Phi)$. For a complex reductive group $G$ realized as a self-adjoint subgroup of $GL(n,\mathbb{C})$, we show that if $(E,\Phi)$ corresponds to a representation $\rho$ of $\pi_1(\Sigma)$, then $(E,-\Phi)$ corresponds to $(\overline{\rho}^{\,t})^{-1}$. As a consequence, the moduli space of reversible Higgs bundles is the fixed locus of an involution of the character variety and carries the structure of a real affine algebraic set. For a connected semisimple group and every topological type, we prove that the reversible locus in the smooth moduli space is a $(B,A,A)$-brane. We then describe reversibility through spectral data: in even rank, for a smooth spectral curve, reversible Higgs bundles correspond to line bundles invariant under the involution $\eta\mapsto-\eta$; in odd rank, under natural genericity assumptions for which the spectral curve is nodal, we give a gluing criterion together with an explicit polystability condition. Finally, for $SL(2n,\mathbb{C})$ we construct a relative Fourier–Mukai transform over the regular locus of the Hitchin base and prove that it maps the structure sheaf of the reversible locus to an object whose support is exactly the regular degree-zero $PSp(2n,\mathbb{C})$-locus in the Langlands dual $PGL(2n,\mathbb{C})$-moduli space. This support is of type $(B,B,B)$.

A three-block higher-rank deformed Hermitian–Yang–Mills correspondence on $\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1$

We study the invariant rank-four deformed Hermitian–Yang–Mills equation associated with the chain $\mathcal{O}(1)\to\mathcal{O}(2)^{\oplus2}\to\mathcal{O}(3)$ over $\mathbb P^1$, with vertical weights $(4,2,0)$ and a fixed product Kähler class and phase. For arbitrary linear arrows $\psi=Bz$ and $\phi=(Az)^T$, smooth strictly calibrated reduced solutions exist exactly when $A$ is invertible and $z^TA^TBz$ is not identically zero. The same condition characterizes stability, semistability and polystability in the specified equivariant coherent category. The classification includes all eleven nonempty coefficient strata and both coincident and distinct divisor points on the rank-one lower boundary. The analytic proof retains the ordered, noncommuting middle equation. After constructing positive-parameter solutions, it rules out unbounded metric values by combining the source budgets with moving spectral tests; on the rank-one lower boundary, the divisor mass must also be retained. Global value, gradient and symbol estimates then give a smooth strictly calibrated endpoint on the original chain. No equivalence with full coherent or derived-category stability, uniqueness, or estimate uniform across changing chains is asserted.

Generalized Thom Spectra, Conjugate Stacks, and truncated Brown-Peterson Spectra

We propose a of definition conjugate stack for a class of suitable $\mathbb{E}_3$-$\mathrm{MU}$-algebras that includes the truncated Brown-Peterson spectra $\mathrm{BP}\langle n \rangle$ for all heights $n$. Then we calculate part of $\mathrm{BP}\langle n \rangle^{\mathrm{conj}}$ as a quotient stack in terms of Witt vectors. To perform this computation we study generalized Thom spectra and their relative Topological Hochschild Homology. We exhibit the Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum $\mathrm{H}\mathbb{F}_2$ as a $\mathbb{E}_3$-$\mathrm{MU}$-Thom spectrum, the $p$-local Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectra $\mathrm{H}\mathbb{Z}/p^n$ (except for $\mathrm{H}\mathbb{Z}/4$) and $\mathrm{H}\mathbb{Z}_{(p)}$ as $\mathbb{E}_3$-$\mathrm{MU}_{(p)}$-Thom spectra, and the connective complex K-theory spectrum $ku$ as $\mathbb{E}_1$-$\mathrm{MU}$-Thom spectra. Cominuscule Richardson varieties

A Richardson variety in a cominuscule flag variety is defined by a skew shape of boxes. We prove that any cominuscule Richardson variety has a unique decomposition as a product of indecomposable cominuscule Richardson varieties, which are given by the connected components of the skew shape. We also prove that the first Chow group and the Picard group of a cominuscule Richardson variety are dual to each other; both are free abelian groups of rank equal to the number of indecomposable factors. Along the way, we construct an explicit desingularization of any cominuscule Richardson variety of classical Lie type as a tower of (isotropic) Grassmannian bundles. Our results imply that the Hilbert polynomial of the minimal ample line bundle is a well-defined geometric invariant of any cominuscule Richardson variety. We give a positive formula for this Hilbert polynomial.
