A quantum connection approach to rationality

We extract rank and regularized exponents from cyclic generic factors of the quantum connection and show that these data persist under the birational comparisons considered here. Applications include showing non-rationality of cubic threefolds, ordinary Gushel–Mukai threefolds, very general quartic fourfolds, and products of the threefolds with $\PP^1$.

Borel subgroups of the automorphism group of an affine variety

We study Borel subgroups of the automorphism group of an affine variety X and their associated Lie algebras. We prove a bijective correspondence between the set of Borel subgroups of Aut(X) and the set of maximal nested unipotent subgroups of Aut(X). We show that if X is factorial of dimension at most 3, then the Lie algebra of every maximal nested unipotent subgroup has the special property of being what we call "integral"; we also show that this fails for X = affine space of dimension > 3. As an application of our results, we show that Nagata's automorphism is contained in a unique Borel subgroup.

ON THE DISTANCE TO DISCRIMINANTS AND OSCULATING VARIETIES

We study the problem of finding the closest singular hypersurface to a given nonsingular one from algebro-geometric point of view. The set of singular hypersurfaces $\Xi$ of a given degree is a projective variety dual to the Veronese variety. However, as was shown by Raffalli [Raf14], the Bombieri-Weyl (also known as apolar) distance from a general real hypersurface to $\Xi$ could be minimized at a singular point of $\Xi$. We study the singular locus of $\Xi$ and its irreducible component, consisting of hypersurfaces with cuspidal singularities. This variety is projectively dual to the tangential variety of the Veronese variety. We compute its Euclidean Distance Degree using topological tools and deduce a formula for the number of critical points of the distance function to $\Xi$ from a general hypersurface. We also initiate the study of the analogous problem for higher osculating varieties to the Veronese variety. Furthermore, we establish a new extremal property of Chebyshev polynomials (conjectured in [Raf14]) by characterizing real-rooted binary forms that maximize the distance to $\Xi$.

Degeneracy loci and unlikely intersections in abelian schemes

Let $\mathcal{A}\to S$ be an abelian scheme over a normal quasi-projective variety over a number field, and let $\mathcal{X}\subseteq\mathcal{A}$ be a positive-dimensional subvariety. For every integer $t>0$, we prove that, outside the $t$-degeneracy locus of $\mathcal{X}$, at most finitely many points lie in flat group subschemes of relative dimension less than $t$. In particular, this intersection is not Zariski dense whenever $\mathcal{X}$ is $t$-nondegenerate. The proof combines a bounded height theorem with uniform large Galois orbit estimates, o-minimal point counting, and mixed Ax–Schanuel, following the Pila–Zannier strategy. The arithmetic input is an explicit bound for the complexity of endomorphism relations, obtained from geometry of numbers and height estimates for abelian varieties. As applications, we formulate a relative Mordell–Lang conjecture, prove it for section images in powers of certain abelian schemes, and establish injectivity of specialization of the group of sections outside a proper closed subset under variation and dimension hypotheses.

$\mathbb{A}^1$-connectedness of moduli of semistable bundles and symplectic bundles on a curve

In this note, we show that over a geometrically irreducible smooth projective curve over an infinite field $k$, the moduli stack of semistable vector bundles of fixed determinant is $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected if and only if the moduli stack admits a $k$-rational point. For this we use Langton's elementary modifications for vector bundles at the level of families. In addition, we prove the $\mathbb{A}^1$-connectedness of the moduli stack of symplectic bundles with forms valued in a fixed line bundle $L$ on a smooth projective curve of genus $g \ge 2$ over an infinite field $k$ with $C(k)\neq \emptyset$. As an application, we deduce the $\mathbb{A}^1$-connectedness of moduli stack of quasi-parabolic symplectic vector bundles with forms valued in a fixed line bundle.

Simpson filtrations and closure relations of Hodge moduli spaces

In this paper, we study closure relations of Simpson strata in Hodge moduli spaces over a smooth complex projective curve of genus $g\geq2$ and prove in every rank that the Heinloth weight strictly increases whenever a specialization changes the fixed component. For stable full chains, we refine this numerical condition by comparing the degrees of the corresponding filtration steps and construct counterexamples to Simpson's nestedness conjecture for the Dolbeault and de Rham moduli spaces in every rank $n\geq4$. Using the maximum property of this weight, we also discuss Simpson filtrations from the viewpoint of $\Theta$ stratifications.

Descartes' rule of signs for arbitrary fewnomial systems

The classical Descartes' rule of signs bounds the number of positive roots of a real polynomial in one variable by the number of sign changes of its coefficients. This bound only depends on the order of the exponents and on the signs of the coefficients, that is, on the oriented matroids of the exponent and coefficient matrices. We give a multivariate generalization of this rule to arbitrary fewnomial systems: for systems of $n$ real polynomial equations in $n$ variables with $n+k+1$ monomials, we obtain upper bounds for the number of nondegenerate positive solutions which only depend on sign conditions on the maximal minors of the coefficient matrix and of the exponent matrix and its liftings. For $k=1$ they are the Descartes rules of signs for circuits of Bihan-Dickenstein and Bihan-Dickenstein-Forsgård. Our approach starts from the Gale duality and the Khovanskii-Rolle argument of Bihan and Sottile, which reduce the problem to counting common zeros of iterated Jacobians in a polyhedron $\Delta$. This polyhedron is a chamber of a hyperplane arrangement whose combinatorics is determined by the oriented matroid of the coefficient matrix. We bound the number of these zeros by the Bézout number minus the zeros forced in the other chambers by a topological degree, which we compute by a facet-count formula involving the signs of minors of a Gale dual matrix of the exponent matrix. This leads to a recursion over the flats of the arrangement, which ends on lines with the Descartes rules for circuits. In this way the coefficients enter the bounds through the combinatorics of the arrangement, and the exponents through sign conditions on minors.

A Bogomolov property for moduli spaces of polynomials over abelian extensions

Let $d\geq2$ be an integer, and let $\operatorname{MPoly}^d$ be the moduli space of degree-$d$ polynomials. For every number field $K$, we prove that there exists $\epsilon_{K,d}>0$ such that \[ \left\lbrace\alpha\in\operatorname{MPoly}^d(K^{\mathrm{ab}})\colon h_{\mathrm{crit}}(\alpha)<\epsilon_{K,d}\right\rbrace=\left\lbrace\alpha\in\operatorname{MPoly}^d(K^{\mathrm{ab}})\colon h_{\mathrm{crit}}(\alpha)=0\right\rbrace \] is finite, where $h_{\mathrm{crit}}$ is the critical height. In particular, only finitely many $K^{\mathrm{ab}}$-rational points of $\operatorname{MPoly}^d$ are postcritically finite. The proof combines the correspondence method of Ji–Song–Xie with local ramification estimates and the uniform finiteness of intertwined classes in $\operatorname{MPoly}^d$. We also prove an analogous finiteness theorem for non-preperiodic marked points in non-isotrivial one-parameter polynomial families.

Classification of low degree del Pezzo orbifolds II

Del Pezzo orbifolds are del Pezzo surfaces equipped with a strict normal crossing divisor, called boundary, such that the log anticanonical divisor is ample. We classify del Pezzo orbifolds of degree less than 6 in terms of components of the boundary, in the sense of Campana. This completes our previous work on classification of del Pezzo orbifolds with irreducible boundaries.

The Lebrun–Salamon conjecture is true in dimension up to 56

We prove the LeBrun–Salamon conjecture for positive quaternionic Kähler manifolds of quaternionic dimension n <= 14. To do so, we first show that the isometry group Isom(M) of any minimal counterexample M has rank at most one, hence dimension at most three. On the other hand, we consider a characteristic number which equals dim Isom(M) - (n+3) if n is even and dim Isom(M) - (n+1) if n is odd, and show that this index is a sum of positive quantities when n <= 14, yielding a contradiction. The toolset used to show positivity enlarges in stages. Projection curvature moments suffice through n=8; positive-semidefinite curvature moments extend the argument through n=10; and signed scalar orbital moments give the new inequalities needed for n=11,12. Scalar orbital moments alone fail at n=13; combining them with Hodge–Riemann positivity for squares of cohomology classes extends the proof to n=13,14. We give exact separating obstructions explaining the changes of method.

Lifting negative curves from finite fields and Seshadri constants at ten points

We use finite-field calculations and mixed-characteristic deformation to construct nef divisors on very general complex blow-ups of the plane. A lifting and smoothing criterion converts a reducible nodal divisor over $\mathbb{F}_{127}$ into a smooth genus-$10$ curve of class $117H-37(E_1+\cdots+E_{10})$, retaining control of its first-order obstruction map. Its normal bundle in a suitable deformation is semistable, so Petrakiev's multiplicity estimate yields the nef class $27379H-8658(E_1+\cdots+E_{10})$ at ten very general points. Their multipoint Seshadri constant is therefore at least $8658/27379$, improving Petrakiev's bound $228/721$. The geometric input is an existence criterion in characteristic zero verified by computations in positive characteristic.

Bi-Lipschitz invariance of the transverse polynomial along polar arcs

We study transverse polynomials along polar arcs of reduced holomorphic plane function germs. We prove that, under bi-Lipschitz right equivalence, matched tangential polar arcs have the same transverse order and their transverse polynomials agree up to nonzero rescalings of the source and target, at every rational scale $1<q<d(\gamma)$, where $d(\gamma)$ is the gradient canyon degree. This range is sharp as the result can fail at both endpoints, even under analytic right equivalence. As an application, we recover the bi-Lipschitz invariance of the augmented Newton polygon proved by Migus–Păunescu–Tibăr. We also give an example showing that the transverse polynomial contains new information not detected by the polar-value invariants and augmented Newton polygons.

On the DML(1) property for regular endomorphisms of affine spaces: multiplicities of points at infinity

Let $f$ be a regular endomorphism of $\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{C}}^N$ of algebraic degree $d$ and let $f_{\infty}$ be the induced endomorphism of the infinity hyperplane $H_{\infty}$. Suppose that for every periodic point $x_0\in H_{\infty}(\mathbb{C})$ of period $n_0$, the geometric mean of the multiplicities $e_{f_{\infty}}(x_0),\dots,e_{f_{\infty}}(f_{\infty}^{n_0-1}(x_0))$ is strictly less than $d$. Then we show that the dynamical Mordell–Lang conjecture for $f$ holds for curves in $\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{C}}^N$.

Classification of reductive monoids

We classify reductive monoids over arbitrary base schemes by descent from the split classification in arXiv:2607.00322. For a reductive group scheme $G$, we construct its sheaf of based root data, abstract Cartan torus, abstract Weyl group, and a scheme of Weyl cones. The last of these represents the functor of isomorphism classes of rigidified reductive monoids with unit group $G$. As applications, we deduce a criterion for the existence of monoids that are not groups, prove an extension theorem over normal integral bases, and construct the Vinberg monoids without a quasi-split hypothesis.

Automorphic commutator relations in relative geometric Langlands

We prove the automorphic commutator relation conjectured by Liu and Wang arXiv:2504.00275, which is the geometric input for the automorphic Clifford relations in their framework relating higher period integrals to higher derivatives of $L$-functions over function fields. The relation was previously established only under additional cohomological vanishing assumptions and for curves of genus different from one; we remove these assumptions. The main new ingredient is a "universal-local" stage between the local and the semi-local settings: we introduce the classifying stack of formal multidisks with two ordered marked sections, and we construct universal-local analogues of the Hecke stacks, unit objects, Hecke actions and special cohomological correspondences. Fusion and purity on this stack yield a universal-local commutator identity, which is proved using only the local assumptions on the Plancherel algebra that enter the conjecture. Specialization to a curve and the six-functor formalism then give the conjecture for every smooth projective curve.

The Riemann theta function near soliton limit

It has been known that (the square of) Jacobi elliptic function can be expressed by an infinite sum of single solitons of $\sech^2$ shape. In this paper, we show that there exists a similar structure for higher genus cases. It turns out that this is just a consequence of the quasi-periodicity of the Riemann $\theta$-function. More precisely, we show that the second derivative of $\log \theta$ with the real Riemann $\theta$-function of genus $g$ near soliton limit can be well approximated by the sum of real and regular $g$-soliton solutions of Hirota-type in $g$-dimensional real space $\R^g$. This leads to a tessellation of $\R^g$, whose tile is an oblique prism divided into $2^g$ sections by hyper-planes of dominant exponents in the theta function. We apply the results to study quasi-periodic solutions to the KdV and KP equations. We construct the quasi-periodic solutions using the Schottky group, which uniformizes the corresponding Riemann surfaces. We also discuss solitons on quasi-periodic background by pinching some of the homological cycles

Slope Stability for ${\mathbf Z}_p$-Towers of Curves

This work is devoted to a systematic study of slope stability for $\mathbf Z_p$-towers of the projective line over finite fields of characteristic $p$, ramified only at infinity. Our aim is to understand to what extent geometric stability of the genus sequence, or of the ramification break sequence, implies arithmetic stability of the Newton slopes of the zeta functions of the curves in the tower. We prove positive results and construct counterexamples that clarify the boundary between slope stability and its failure, with sharp bounds in several cases. For towers with eventual minimal ramification break ratios, a condition stronger than genus stability, Kosters and Zhu proved slope stability under an additional degree-gap condition. We construct towers with minimal break ratios that are not slope stable, answering negatively both their question of whether the gap can be removed and their broader question of whether genus stability implies slope stability. Under the minimal-break hypothesis alone, we prove exact partial slope stability on growing intervals approaching the first block, with uniform comparisons over explicit boundary annuli and finite flat spectral pieces. Further counterexamples distinguish partial from complete first-block propagation, first-block from two-block propagation, and full classical stability from a uniform annular slope law below one. We obtain improved bounds for the classical degree-gap constant, the partial-stability loss, and the sufficient starting levels, all independent of the constant-field degree. The proof uses a separate precision theorem for the semilinear Frobenius on finite contact blocks.

The Prym-Green conjecture in even genera up to 30

We prove the Prym-Green conjecture in every even genus from 20 to 30. The genus 24 case disproves the suggestion of Chiodo-Eisenbud-Farkas-Schreyer that the conjecture might fail in every genus divisible by 8. Our proof uses rational nodal curves with cyclic symmetry to decompose the relevant Koszul differential into a direct sum of smaller maps indexed by characters. We carry out the resulting rank computations over finite fields using the block Wiedemann algorithm.

Boundedness of minimal modifications

For fixed $n$ and $\epsilon>0$, we prove boundedness of projective birational morphisms $f\colon X\to\mathbb P^n$ over $\mathbb C$ for which $(X,B)$ is an $\epsilon$-lc pair, $B\geq 0$, $K_X+B$ is nef over $\mathbb P^n$, and $\mathrm{deg}(f_*B)$ is bounded. The nonzero coefficients of $B$ need not have a positive lower bound, and $(\mathbb P^n,f_*B)$ need not be log canonical. The $f$-exceptional prime divisors on $X$, equipped with their reduced induced scheme structures, form a bounded family of projective schemes, including when they are nonnormal. We also obtain a uniform positive lower bound for the log canonical thresholds of pullbacks of all effective target divisors of bounded degree. The boundedness statement proved in this paper was originally conjectured by Caucher Birkar.

A Quadratic Bound for Automorphism Groups of Curves of Positive $p$-Rank in Odd Characteristic

Let $X$ be a nonsingular projective curve of genus $g\ge2$ over an algebraically closed field of odd characteristic $p$. Giulietti and Korchmáros established a quadratic genus bound with constant $900$ forcing zero $p$-rank for curves of even genus. We extend this bound to odd genus: for every $g\ge2$, positive $p$-rank implies $|\Aut(X)|<900g^2$. Starting from Montanucci's two-short-orbit reduction, we combine ramification estimates and a minimum-genus argument to reduce a counterexample to an almost-simple group acting on a cover of the projective line with two branch points. The main ingredients are an intrinsic description of the second ramification group via Hasse–Arf and genus bounds for intermediate quotients associated with parabolic subgroups. These, together with order and local-structure estimates, exclude every possible simple socle. The proof uses the classification of finite simple groups.

Sharp bounds and gap phenomena for large $p$-subgroups of automorphism groups of curves

Let $X$ be a curve of genus $g\ge2$ over an algebraically closed field of odd characteristic $p$, and let $G=\mathrm{Aut}(X)$. A theorem of Giulietti and Korchmaros shows that if $G$ fixes no point and a $p$-subgroup $S\le G_P$ satisfies $|S|>\frac{p}{p-1}g$, then $X$ is one of the classical hyperelliptic, Hermitian, or Ree curves. We determine the sharp boundary and the first gap below it. At equality, besides the classical curves, exactly three types occur: the ordinary curves $y^p-y=x+c/x$, the zero-$p$-rank curves $y^3=x^p-x$ for $p\equiv2\pmod3$, and, in characteristic $3$, the ordinary genus-six family $y^3-y=c\left(x+\frac1{x^3-x}\right)$. As a key ingredient, we classify zero-$p$-rank curves whose full automorphism group fixes no point and which admit a $p$-subgroup of order larger than the genus. We then prove that, when $|S|>p$, the boundary classification already follows from the weaker inequality $|S|>p(g-p+1)/(p-1)$. For $|S|\ge p^3$, the forbidden interval above $m=(p-1)|S|/p$ has width at least $p(p-1)/2$, and below $m+(p^2-1)/2$ at most one further genus can occur, with a rigid ramification structure. Finally, we classify the first admissible layer: it occurs only for $|S|=p^2$, and the resulting ordinary curves admit a complete description in terms of two-dimensional Artin–Schreier spaces.

Tame Discrete Sets on Affine Semisimple Homogeneous Spaces

Winkelmann conjectures that every smooth flexible complex affine variety of dimension at least two is a Rosay–Rudin space. We verify this for every positive-dimensional quotient $G/H$ with $G$ a connected complex semisimple algebraic group and $H$ a closed connected reductive subgroup. Weak and strong tameness coincide, every injection between tame discrete sets extends to a holomorphic automorphism, and complements of tame, finite, or empty sets are Oka. Every sufficiently sparse enumerated sequence can be sent to a fixed sequence by a composition of $n$ complete holomorphic flow maps, with $n\le6$; injective self-maps of the fixed sequence admit such a realization with $n\le2$. These flows preserve an invariant algebraic volume form. The proof uses entire interpolation and regular functions invariant under two solvable subgroups to construct the automorphisms. If $G$ is simple of rank at least two and $G/H$ is spherical and admits a closed equivariant embedding into an irreducible module, the normalization bound improves to $n\le4$. We also prove that $\SL_2/N(T)$, where $T$ is a maximal torus, is an RR-space. This quotient is the complement of a smooth conic in $\mathbf P^2$.

A natural Chow lemma for smooth threefolds and fourfolds

Let $X$ be a smooth proper integral variety of dimension at most four over a field of characteristic zero. We construct a finite sequence of blowups along smooth centers with projective endpoint, preserving the intersection of all maximal quasi-projective opens of $X$. The construction depends only on a fixed functorial principalization procedure and is natural under isomorphisms, including those over different ground fields. The proof has two parts. A colength argument on regular local surfaces gives, in every dimension, a finite preparation after which some maximal quasi-projective open has complement mapping into codimension at least three in $X$. In dimensions at most four these images are points or curves. Ample numerical classes on the normalized components of that complement give finite bounds for summing base ideals of linear systems. The resulting ideal descends to the original field; geometric integrality is not required.

Semicontinuity for families of power series II

The present article is a generalization of our paper \cite{GP21}, together with new applications. The original problem came up in connection with the classification of singularities in positive characteristic. Then it is important that certain invariants cannot increase if we deform a given singularity. In \cite{GP21} we proved this for the completed fiber dimension under deformations with section. In general the nearby fiber contains however several singularities and in this article we prove that also the sum of the completed fiber dimensions behaves semicontinuous. This is well known for analytic or algebraic families. However, for families of power series the problem is more difficult, since the the modules defining the invariants are quasi-finite but not finite over the base space. In fact, in general the usual fibre dimension is not semicontinuous. However, if we pass to the completed fibres in a family of rings or modules over arbitrary Noetherian rings, we can prove that their dimension is semicontinuous. The proof is different from that given in \cite{GP21} and, though more general, even easier. Finally we apply this to prove the semicontinuity of several singularity invariants, such as the Milnor number and the Tjurina number in families of hypersurfaces and complete intersections. We end with a problem concerning the Milnor number of an isolated complete intersection singularity.
