Statistical validation of calorimeter inpainting with generative diffusion priors

Localized detector inefficiencies produce incomplete calorimeter data that limit the ability to perform precision measurements. We address this problem in relativistic heavy-ion collisions from a Bayesian perspective using pretrained calorimeter diffusion models as priors to reconstruct the missing signal conditioned on surrounding measurements. In this work, we conduct a systematic comparison of several diffusion-based inpainting algorithms, whose performance is evaluated using Bayesian posterior diagnostics of energy response, spatial bias, and uncertainty calibration. The reconstruction fidelity is also analyzed across collision centralities and masked region sizes. This study establishes a general validation strategy for probabilistic reconstruction of missing detector information.

Energy Correlators in $V + X$ as a Benchmark Observable for Precision QCD

We propose projected energy correlators measured on the recoiling QCD radiation of a $Z/\gamma$ as a benchmark observable for precision QCD at the LHC. Using the $Z/\gamma$ as a hard scale prevents the need for a jet algorithm, simplifying both the perturbative and non-perturbative corrections. We develop a framework to combine state-of-the-art fixed-order amplitudes, high order resummation, and universal non-perturbative matrix elements. Our approach is based on numerically computed inclusive hard functions, allowing flexibility in the process and the inclusion of realistic experimental cuts. We perform detailed numerical studies of the projected energy correlators at next-to-leading order + next-to-next-to-leading logarithm (NLO+NNLL) to verify the stability of our setup. We present numerical results at NLO+NNLL, which are the first complete matched predictions for energy correlators at the LHC at this order. We discuss the prospects for extensions to higher orders, outlining a path to NNLO calculations of energy correlators at the LHC.

Observing Macroscopic Consequences of Electroweak Anomalies with Archival DELPHI Data

In this Letter, we emphasize that asymmetries in charge flux produced in the decays of on-shell Z-bosons provide a macroscopic manifestation of electroweak anomalies in the Standard Model (SM). We propose that these can be cleanly observed using charge correlators, providing a new formulation of forward-backward asymmetry measurements that is particularly well suited for precision studies of hadronic decays. Using archival DELPHI data, we perform a first measurement of the one-point charge correlator of electromagnetic charge flux on hadrons, and cleanly observe the macroscopic imprint of the underlying anomaly. Our analysis illustrates the potential of charge correlators as precision electroweak observables, and motivates a renewed effort to resolve longstanding tensions in hadronic asymmetry measurements.

Understanding the enhanced $\phi \eta^{\prime}$ decay mode of the $\phi(2170)$ through strange-meson loops

The nature of the strangeonium-like $\phi(2170)$ remains controversial. Recent measurements of $e^+e^-\to\phi\eta^{(\prime)}$ reveal a striking puzzle: a broad $\phi(2170)$-like structure appears in the $\phi\eta^\prime$ channel but not in $\phi\eta$, despite the strong phase-space suppression of $\phi\eta^\prime$. We investigate this unexpectedly large $\phi\eta^\prime$ decay fraction within the excited-strangeonium assignment. A combined analysis of the $e^+e^-\to\phi\eta$ and $e^+e^-\to\phi\eta^\prime$ cross sections is performed by including short-distance amplitudes from vacuum quark-pair creation and long-distance transitions mediated by strange-meson loops. The short-distance mechanism predicts too small a $\phi\eta^\prime/\phi\eta$ strength ratio to explain the data. In contrast, strange-meson loops naturally enhance this ratio because the SU(3)-flavor factor at the $K^{(*)}K^{(*)}\eta^{(\prime)}$ vertex suppresses the transition to $\phi\eta$ relative to $\phi\eta^\prime$. The resulting overall description of both cross sections supports an important role for long-distance dynamics in hidden-strangeness decays of excited vector strangeonia. More intriguingly, although the excited strangeonium contributions have been included, the current high-precision $\phi\eta$ data still favor the existence of an extra narrow vector state near $2.15~\mathrm{GeV}$ with a width of about $25~\mathrm{MeV}$. If confirmed, it would be a promising exotic-hadron candidate in the light-vector sector. Furthermore, we test $\Gamma(Y\to\phi\eta)/\Gamma(Y\to\phi\eta^\prime)=0.25$, $1$, and $4$ as fit inputs and obtain similarly good descriptions of the cross sections in all three cases. The present data therefore do not allow this ratio to discriminate among different internal configurations of the narrow state.

NNLO QCD corrections to $WW\gamma$ production at the LHC

Triboson production processes are crucial to study quartic gauge-boson couplings. We present the computation of the radiative corrections to $WW\gamma$ production at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD. The leptonic decays of the $W$ bosons and off-shell effects are fully included. The calculation is exact, apart from the finite part of the two-loop amplitudes, which is evaluated in a soft-photon approximation. We validate our approach by using $Z\gamma$ production as a reference process, where we take advantage of the availability of the exact two-loop amplitudes to derive a conservative error estimate for our approximation, and then apply it to $WW\gamma$ production. For typical selection cuts, at the centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, the NNLO corrections increase the next-to-leading order (NLO) result by about $16\%$, and the perturbative uncertainties are reduced to the $\pm4\%$ level. The uncertainty from the soft approximation turns out to be at the few per mille level, largely subdominant compared to the residual perturbative uncertainties, both for the fiducial cross section and the most relevant differential distributions.

Enhanced Three-Particle Contribution to Electroweak Penguin $B$-Meson Decays

We compute for the first time the subleading twist correction to the exclusive rare $b \to \left \{s, d \right \} \ell^{+} \ell^{-}$ decays from the three-particle $B$-meson distribution amplitude at next-to-leading order accuracy by employing the soft-collinear effective theory. This constitutes the last missing ingredient for the complete factorization analysis of the hadronic matrix element of the weak effective Hamiltonian at leading power in the heavy quark expansion. Incorporating further a variety of the next-to-next-to-leading-order QCD corrections to the spectator-scattering amplitude and the weak annihilation topology, we then present the improved field-theoretic predictions for phenomenologically interesting observables in the electroweak penguin $B \to \left \{K, \pi \right \} \ell^{+} \ell^{-}$ decays.

Pairton: Iterative Reconstruction of Short-Lived Particles

We present Pairton, an iterative framework for reconstructing short-lived particles in high-energy collision events. By formulating particle reconstruction as a masked prediction process over graph structures, Pairton learns conditional distributions consistent with a factorised decomposition of decay products and iteratively predicts edges in the adjacency matrix representing particle decay relationships. Leveraging a pairformer-based architecture with dynamically updated pairwise representations, our method incorporates global event consistency. We demonstrate state-of-the-art performance on fully hadronic $t\bar{t}$ decays. Pairton provides a general, flexible paradigm for particle reconstruction and can be readily extended to other topologies, bridging ideas from modern generative modelling and high-energy physics.

Improved measurement of $C\!P$ violation in $B^{0}_{s} \!\to J/\psi \pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ decays

The time-dependent $C\!P$ asymmetry in $B^{0}_{s} \!\to J/\psi \pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ decays is measured using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $6\,\text{fb}^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of $13\,\text{TeV}$ during $\mbox{2015--2018}$. The $C\!P$-violating phase, $\phi_{s}$, the direct $C\!P$-violation parameter, $\left|\lambda\right|$, and the decay width of the heavy mass eigenstate in the $B^{0}_{s}$ system, $\Gamma_{\mathrm{ H}}$, are measured respectively to be $\phi_{s} = -0.077 \pm 0.034 \pm 0.007\,\text{rad}$, $\left|\lambda\right| = 0.993 \pm 0.026 \pm 0.007$ and $\Gamma_{\mathrm{ H}} = 0.610 \pm 0.002 \pm 0.004\,\text{ps}^{-1}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These results are consistent with previous measurements and the expectation based on the Standard Model. The combination with previous measurements in $B^{0}_{s} \!\to J/\psi \pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ decays using $7\,\text{TeV}$ and $8\,\text{TeV}$ proton-proton collision data yields $\phi_{s} = -0.046 \pm 0.031\,\text{rad}$, $\left|\lambda\right| = 0.975 \pm 0.024$ and $\Gamma_{\mathrm{ H}} = 0.610 \pm 0.004\,\text{ps}^{-1}$, while the combination including all other LHCb measurements gives $\phi_{s} = -0.041 \pm 0.017\,\text{rad}$.

Comparative measurements of DC electrical breakdown distributions in liquid nitrogen, liquid helium, and liquid argon

We present a comparative study of DC electrical breakdown in liquid nitrogen, liquid helium, and liquid argon using a common cryostat, electrode assembly, voltage-ramp protocol, and analysis procedure. This common experimental configuration minimizes systematic differences that often complicate comparisons among cryogenic liquids, including variations in electrode geometry, stressed area, surface finish, and gap spacing. For each liquid, breakdown was characterized as a statistical distribution rather than by a single characteristic voltage, allowing the stochastic nature of the process to be examined. Measurements were performed both near saturated vapor pressure and under modest pressurization to assess the influence of bubble formation and related thermodynamic effects. Liquid argon exhibited a non-stationary "turn-on" behavior, with breakdown voltage increasing over repeated discharges, consistent with evolution of the local impurity environment or electrode surface state. Near saturated vapor pressure, liquid helium showed a bimodal breakdown distribution, with a lower-field component consistent with bubble-mediated processes. Liquid nitrogen exhibited higher breakdown fields than liquid argon and fields comparable to those measured in pressurized liquid helium, within the observed run-to-run variation associated with surface state. Taken together, these results support a comparative framework in which breakdown strength reflects both thermodynamic stability against bubble formation and the transport properties of the dominant negative charge carrier.

Beyond $\Delta m^2$: Absolute Mass Sensitivity in Neutrino Oscillations

Conventional wisdom says that neutrino oscillations measure only mass-squared differences and not the absolute neutrino mass scale. This is true, however, only at leading order in the expansion parameters $m_i/E$, the ratios of the neutrino masses $m_i$ ($i=1,2,3$) to the neutrino energy $E$. At next-to-leading order, the oscillation phase includes terms proportional to $m_i^4-m_j^4 = \Delta m^2_{ij}(m_i^2+m_j^2)$, and is therefore sensitive to the absolute mass scale. In this paper, we derive the next-to-leading-order corrections using a wave-packet treatment and taking into account the neutrino-production kinematics. We then apply this result to reactor antineutrinos and find that the JUNO experiment is sensitive to neutrino masses of a few hundred keV. While not competitive with existing bounds from beta decay, electron capture, and cosmology, neutrino oscillations provide a novel, complementary probe of the neutrino mass scale, with sensitivity to a different combination of neutrino masses.

Optical Characterization Measurements of Commercial Polyvinyltoluene Scintillators for Accurate Geant4 Detector Modeling

Accurate Monte Carlo simulation of plastic scintillator detectors requires precise wavelength-dependent optical properties. We present the first comprehensive measurements of wavelength-dependent refractive index $n(\lambda)$ and bulk absorption length $L_{\mathrm{abs}}(\lambda)$ for six commercial polyvinyltoluene (PVT)-based scintillators (Saint Gobain BC-400, BC-404, BC-408, BC-418, BC-422, and BC-430) across the 370-660 nm range. Using a precision refraction apparatus and variable-thickness transmission measurements, we characterize material-specific dispersion that deviates substantially from both the manufacturer specification and literature values for pure PVT. Validation simulations of a BC-422 detector demonstrate a 7.2% reduction in detected photon counts when using our measured $n(\lambda)$ compared to the constant manufacturer value, highlighting the practical importance of accurate optical property data for detector design and calibration. We successfully measure absorption lengths for BC-430 across most of the visible spectrum (2.2-12.4 mm) and for all materials at 372 nm (21-38 mm), while establishing lower bounds exceeding 750 mm for weakly absorbing formulations at longer wavelengths.

Contrastive Learning for Interpretable Anomaly Detection at Collider Experiments

Generic event-level anomaly detection for collider physics has two recurring problems: anomaly scores are hard to interpret, and they correlate strongly with energy scale and object multiplicity. We present Organized Representation via Contrastive learning for Anomaly detection (ORCA), a two-stage framework that first learns an embedding space via supervised contrastive learning across a diverse set of physics processes, then runs a standard autoencoder in that space to generate event-level anomaly scores. On a simulated dataset consistent with conditions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider, ORCA delivers significant gains in both breadth and depth of sensitivity to new physics signals with respect to a baseline autoencoder architecture. Beyond improved sensitivity, the contrastive embedding makes the anomalous sample interpretable: because known processes occupy distinct regions of the space, a maximum-likelihood template fit to the embedding distributions can attribute events in an anomalous sample to template physics processes with quantified uncertainties. We demonstrate that the fit accurately recovers injected signal yields, including for signals excluded from the training of the embedding, and characterizes signals absent from the template library through the known processes they most resemble. These results establish ORCA as a route to interpretable anomaly detection-based searches at colliders, where the embedding geometry carries higher dimensional physics information compared to standard one-dimensional output fits, enhancing downstream statistical analysis.

Unknown Unknowns: Model Misspecification in Machine Learning for Physics

Machine learning is now a central tool for solving inverse problems in particle physics and astronomy. Models are trained on simulation and deployed on real data, raising the question not just of whether they fit, but of whether they are wrong in ways we did not anticipate: the unknown unknowns. This challenge of model misspecification is not unique to machine learning. In physics, misspecification is sometimes exactly what we want to find: new discoveries appear as failures of existing models. At other times, we want such effects absorbed into the analysis without biasing the measurement. A robust analysis is one that absorbs the misspecifications we are not interested in, while preserving sensitivity to the ones we are. Machine learning can both amplify misspecification and provide new tools to address it. We discuss the challenges of model misspecification, diagnostics for detecting it, and strategies for mitigation. No single diagnostic can confirm that a model is correctly specified: detection and mitigation are two halves of an iterative loop, in which a battery of complementary diagnostics is applied, the model is updated, and the process repeated. Robustness against unknown unknowns is ultimately less about any single technique than about a disposition: a willingness to suspect one's own model, and to design analyses that can survive being wrong in ways one did not anticipate.

MANGO: An Autodiff Neutrino Oscillation Engine for Differentiable Analysis Pipelines

Computing neutrino oscillation probabilities is a solved problem; computing their derivatives is not. We present MANGO (MANGO: A Neutrino Gradient Oscillator), a composable oscillation engine in which every computed quantity is differentiable with respect to all inputs, including propagation geometry, detector depth, and individual Earth-shell densities. None of these quantities appear in traditional analytic probability formulas. The engine supports vacuum, constant-density, layered-PREM, arbitrary-profile, and adiabatic solar propagation, alongside front-ends for non-standard interactions, 3+N sterile states, decoherence, and non-unitary mixing. Because reverse-mode cost depends on output rather than input dimension, evaluating sensitivities incurs a constant 2.5-3x forward-pass overhead. As a result, calculating sensitivities for all 369 density, electron-fraction, and shell-radius parameters of a layered Earth costs no more than the 6 standard oscillation parameters. By maintaining exact sensitivity signals, MANGO allows gradients to flow continuously past the probability stage and through detector response, event weighting, binning, and likelihoods. We demonstrate this on a stylized Earth-tomography analysis. In a single pass, MANGO computes the marginalized uncertainty on a six-zone radial density model and, by differentiating through the inverse Fisher matrix, evaluates its sensitivity with respect to detector angular resolution. This provides an experimental-design metric unreachable using traditional analytic probability formulas. Three-flavor and layered-Earth probabilities match external benchmarks (OscProb, NuFast-Earth) to within 10^-9 to 10^-5, while all forward models, BSM limits, and differentiation paths are verified against exact analytic solutions and finite differences.

Non-perturbative quark production and transport in the evolving glasma: the WAGASHI event generator

We study non-perturbative quark-antiquark pair production and the subsequent quark dynamics in the earliest glasma stage of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. For that, we develop a new model, WAGASHI (Wong-precessing Anisotropic Glasma And ScHwinger-produced Initial-conditions), which combines classical Yang-Mills glasma evolution, Wong-equation transport, and Schwinger pair production on an event-by-event basis. We find that a sizeable number of quarks, comparable to the final hadron yields, are produced already during the glasma stage and subsequently undergo substantial momentum broadening and spin randomization, suggesting a significant contribution toward the early equilibration of the quark-gluon plasma. We also determine the event-by-event distributions of baryon number, electric charge, strangeness, and spin polarization in Pb-Pb and O-O collisions at LHC energies, finding particularly large fluctuations in the smaller O-O system. These results provide dynamical initial conditions for the subsequent hydrodynamic evolution of the quark-gluon plasma.

Newtrinos.jl: A Julia Package for Global Analysis of Neutrino Data

Newtrinos.jl is an open-source Julia package for performing global analyses of neutrino data. It provides a modular, three-layer architecture that separates physics models, experiment descriptions, and statistical inference into independent modules. This allows researchers to freely combine experiments and test them against a variety of theoretical models. New experiments and physics models can be added without modifying core code. Full statistical forward models including all relevant systematic uncertainties are implemented for each experimental dataset, defining both the likelihood and the data-generating process and enabling modern statistical inference workflows. The framework is composable, making it straightforward to construct joint likelihoods over multiple datasets. Physics and nuisance parameters can be merged, correlated, or decorrelated across experiments to ensure consistency in the joint fit. The package supports Frequentist and Bayesian inference and is parallelizable across CPU threads or distributed workers. Written entirely in Julia, all models are automatically differentiable, enabling exact gradient computation.

Fine-tuned Normalizing Flows for ALICE Zero Degree Calorimeter Fast Simulation

Simulating the ALICE Zero Degree Calorimeter (ZDC) neutron detector responses at the LHC is computationally expensive, requiring complex Monte Carlo chains. We develop a generative surrogate, focusing on Normalizing Flows (NFs). Through transfer learning, we pre-train on the full imbalanced dataset and fine-tune specialized models for different particle types ($\gamma$, $n$, $\Lambda$, $K_S^0$, $\Sigma^+$) using two gradual-unfreezing schemes. As standard ZDC metrics like Wasserstein distance overlook conditional structure, we introduce refined metrics: conditional weighted MAE, dispersion ratio, and Jaccard co-activation error, that better capture physics-relevant input-output dependencies and response variability. Our ensemble of fine-tuned models achieves a Wasserstein distance of $1.61 \pm 0.02$, outperforming baselines across all metrics. This work provides a generalizable NF-based framework for LHC detector simulation, combining NFs, conditional fine-tuning, and physics-motivated evaluation.

High-precision measurement of the space-like $\eta^\prime$ transition form factor

Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $20.3\ \text{fb}^{-1}$, collected with the BESIII detector at a center-of-mass energy of $3.773\ \text{GeV}$ at the BEPCII collider, we report a precision measurement of the product $Q^2|F(Q^2)|$, where $F(Q^2)$ is the single-virtual space-like transition form factor of the $\eta'$ meson and $Q^2$ is the squared momentum transfer of the tagged virtual photon. The transition form factor is extracted from the differential Born cross section of the two-photon fusion processes $e^+e^- \to e^+e^-\gamma\gamma^* \to e^+e^-\eta^\prime$ using a single-tag technique, where only one scattered lepton is detected. The measurement covers $Q^2 \in [0.1, 6.0]$ GeV$^2$, achieving unprecedented precision, better than $3.0\%$ for $Q^2 < 1.5$ GeV$^2$, and providing the first direct determination at $Q^2 < 0.3$ GeV$^2$.

Transient beam loading effects on energy loss during beam abort in high-current storage ring

Beam abort by shutting off the rf cavities is a widely used machine-protection scheme in modern diffraction-limited synchrotron light source storage rings. In this process, the stored beam loses energy turn by turn until it is intercepted by a dedicated absorber. A key parameter in this process is the number of turns after the rf shutdown until the subsequent beam loss, especially for the beam-size blow-up abort scheme. Despite its importance for designing an abort protection system, this quantity has not been characterized at high stored currents. We report measurements of abort turns over a broad current range from 3 to 400 mA in the 3-GeV NanoTerasu storage ring. The results show a clear current dependence: the beam is lost significantly faster at higher stored currents, with the number of turns until beam loss reduced from 435 at 3 mA to 187 at 400 mA. Our results indicate that transient beam loading induced by the aborting beam in empty rf cavities is the primary mechanism responsible for the enhanced energy loss. The number-of-turns behavior is not simply proportional to the beam loading at high current but saturates. Time-resolved cavity pickup signals, together with tracking simulations and analytical modeling, quantitatively reproduce the observed trend. Our experimental results and theoretical modeling demonstrate that transient beam loading significantly influences abort dynamics in high-current fourth-generation storage rings, emphasizing the need to incorporate this effect into machine-protection system design. Our approximate extension of the steady-state cavity-beam response to beam-abort transients reproduces experimental results well, indicating that the number of turns during a beam abort can be predicted purely numerically.

Axion-Like Particle Search with a Hybrid Cherenkov-Scintillation Detector

This analysis presents the first proof-of-concept search for axion-like particles (ALPs) using a hybrid Cherenkov-scintillation detector at a beam-dump facility. The work is based on the Coherent CAPTAIN-Mills (CCM) experiment, a 10-ton liquid argon light collection detector located at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The CCM200 detector is instrumented with 200 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), providing approximately 50% photocathode coverage. To enable optical discrimination, 80% of the PMTs are coated with a wavelength-shifting material while the remaining 20% are left uncoated. This configuration, combined with nanosecond-scale timing resolution, provides sensitivity to prompt Cherenkov radiation while maintaining efficient detection of liquid argon scintillation light [1, 2]. This analysis constructs four observables that exploit the Cherenkov emission and event topology expected from ALP-induced electromagnetic interactions. These observables are combined into a likelihood-ratio classifier that provides powerful rejection of steady-state backgrounds. No statistically significant excess above the expected background prediction is observed for $10^{-3}~\mathrm{MeV} < m_a < 10~\mathrm{MeV}$. Nevertheless, the improved background rejection enabled by hybrid Cherenkov-scintillation detection allows this analysis to surpass the sensitivity of the previous CCM120 search [3] despite less exposure and demonstrate the physics potential for hybrid Cherenkov-scintillation detectors.

Observation of several sources of $C\!P$ violation in $B^+ \!\to K^+ \pi^+ \pi^-$ decays

An amplitude analysis of $B^+ \!\to K^+ \pi^+ \pi^-$ decays is presented in which six $C\!P$-violating phenomena are judged to be of significance for the first time. This analysis is based on $pp$ collision data recorded with the LHCb detector in 2011-2012, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3\,\text{fb}^{-1}$. Quasi-two-body $C\!P$ violation in $B^+ \!\to \rho(770)^0 K^+$ decays is discovered, while $C\!P$ violation at amplitude level is established in $B^+ \!\to f_2(1270) K^+$ decays. First evidence for $C\!P$ violation is reported in both the fully elastic S-wave $\pi\pi$-$\pi\pi$ rescattering region and also for any decay involving a spin-3 resonance. Additionally, significant $C\!P$-violation effects are identified in the interference between different $\pi\pi$ partial waves, with observation in S-P wave interference and evidence in S-D wave interference, both of which must be driven by long-distance interactions.

Resolution of outstanding puzzles in $B^+ \!\to K^+ \pi^+ \pi^-$ decays

An amplitude analysis of $B^+ \!\to K^+ \pi^+ \pi^-$ decays is presented, based on $pp$ collision data recorded with the LHCb detector in 2011–2012, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3\,\text{fb}^{-1}$. Previous studies of the $B \!\to K \pi \pi$ sector have left key unresolved questions concerning the model of the S-wave contributions. A pivotal finding is that relaxing unitarity-based assumptions about the relation between the $K^*_0(1430)^0$ resonance and the slowly varying scalar part in $K^+\pi^-$ leads to considerably better agreement between the model and data. The $B^+ \!\to K^*_0(1430)^0 \pi^+$ branching fraction now challenges the experimental consensus that $B \!\to K^*_0(1430) \pi$ decays dominate the $B \!\to K \pi \pi$ phase space, aligning with the predictions of QCD factorisation rather than perturbative QCD, thus reversing the agreement found in previous measurements. With this increased flexibility, it also becomes possible to model the scalar $\pi^+ \pi^-$ amplitude using established states, eliminating the need for the ad-hoc “$f_X(1300)$” component included in previous analyses of the $B \!\to K\pi\pi$ sector. These advances facilitate the discovery of ten intermediate decays.

Amplitude analysis of $B^+ \!\to K^+ \pi^+ \pi^-$ decays

The branching fractions and quasi-two-body $C\!P$-violating asymmetries of intermediate states obtained through an amplitude analysis of the charmless three-body decay $B^+ \!\to K^+ \pi^+ \pi^-$ are reported. The analysis is based on $pp$ collision data at centre-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}=7$ and $8\,\text{TeV}$ recorded with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3\,\text{fb}^{-1}$. The most challenging aspect of the amplitude modelling lies in the description of the dominant $K^+ \pi^-$ and $\pi^+ \pi^-$ S-wave contributions. This is achieved by three complementary approaches based on a physically motivated analytic model built on the isobar approximation, the K-matrix formalism, and a quasi-model-independent procedure in which overlapping crossing partial waves are simultaneously studied. In addition, alternative sets of results are presented, considering the $\pi^+ \pi^-$ final state to manifest either through direct $\omega(782)$ decays or $\rho(770)^0\textrm{-}\omega(782)$ mixing. The most precise measurements of branching fractions and $C\!P$ asymmetries are obtained for the vast majority of intermediate states, establishing firmer reference points against which to cleanly probe model-independent physics beyond the Standard Model. The results from all three approaches agree and provide new insight into strong dynamics and the origin of $C\!P$-violation effects in $B^+ \!\to K^+ \pi^+ \pi^-$ decays.

Singlet-Doublet fermion origin of dark matter, neutrino mass and inverse first-order electroweak phase transition

We study the possibility of an inverse first-order electroweak phase transition (IFOEWPT) and observable gravitational waves (GW) in a radiative neutrino mass model of scotogenic type where singlet-doublet (SD) fermions, the lightest of whom is the dark matter (DM) candidate, generate the necessary seesaw at one-loop level. Considering the possibility of light neutrinos being Dirac for simplicity and additional detection prospects, we extend the standard model (SM) with two generations of $SU(2)_L$ singlet and doublet fermions, one singlet scalar, and three right-handed neutrinos (RHNs). While RHNs provide the right chiral parts of light Dirac neutrinos, the SD fermions and the scalar singlet facilitate the one-loop neutrino mass diagram. The neutral component of the lighter SD fermion, stabilized under a residual $Z_2$ symmetry plays the role of DM while the heavier SD fermions strongly couple to the Higgs leading to an IFOEWPT where the Universe undergoes two different first-order phase transition as it goes from the symmetric to the final broken Higgs phase. We constrain the parameter space from the requirements of generating the correct neutrino mass, DM relic as well as IFOEWPT while incorporating the existing constraints from different experiments. The final allowed parameter space of the model can be probed at collider, direct-detection, GW and cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments in near future.

Measurement of the $\bar \nu_\mu-$Hydrogen Charged-Current Quasi-Elastic Cross Section using the NOvA Near Detector

We report a measurement of the total cross section for muon antineutrino charged-current quasi-elastic scattering on hydrogen, $\bar \nu_\mu {\rm H} \to \mu^+ n$, in the NOvA near detector using a $1.2\times10^{21}$ proton-on-target exposure in the NuMI beam. A selection based on topological and kinematic constraints yields 35,509 signal events in the hydrogen-rich ($10.8\%$) detector, providing the highest statistics of (anti)neutrino–hydrogen interactions measured to date. Backgrounds from (anti)neutrino interactions on heavier nuclei are constrained using dedicated data control samples, significantly reducing the related systematic uncertainties. We obtain a value $\sigma (\bar \nu_\mu {\rm H} \to \mu^+ n) = 0.538 \pm 0.009 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.010 ({\rm syst}) \pm0.055 ({\rm flux}) \times 10^{-38}$ cm$^2$ for the total cross section at an average energy of 1.9 GeV, the most precise total cross-section measurement of this process to date. The combined statistical and non-flux systematic uncertainty is more than four times smaller than the flux uncertainty, allowing a future use of this measurement to constrain the absolute $\bar \nu_\mu$ flux.

Model-independent measurement of the transversity amplitudes of the $B^0\to K^{*0}\mu^+\mu^-$ decay

An analysis of the decay amplitudes of $B^0 \to K^{*0}(\to K^+\pi^-)\mu^+\mu^-$ is presented, using proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.4 fb$^{-1}$. The amplitudes are constructed from Legendre polynomials in the $\mu^+\mu^-$ invariant mass squared region $1.1<q^2<8.0$ GeV$^2/c^4$. $C\!P$-averaged observables are obtained from the amplitudes. Some of these observables present deviations with respect to the Standard Model, which can be interpreted as shifts in the effective Wilson coefficients. This model-independent approach enables tests of theoretical predictions that can help disentangle hadronic effects from potential contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model. This allows flexibility in the choice of $q^2$ binning for global analyses. Depending on the binning scheme, the deviation of the Wilson coefficient $C_9$ from its Standard Model expectation varies from $4.3\sigma$ to $4.8\sigma$.

Laboratory constraints on peV-scale mass splitting between ordinary and sterile neutron states

Sterile states of matter, represented by a parallel “mirror” sector, may contribute to the observed dark matter in the Universe. We investigated the parameter space of neutron $(n)$ to mirror-neutron $(n')$ oscillations, in the case where the two states are not necessarily mass-degenerate, taking into account interactions in the mirror sector. By tuning the magnitude of an applied magnetic-field in the range $5~\mu\mathrm{T} < B < 360~\mu\mathrm{T}$ to corresponding resonance conditions for finite mass splitting, we derive exclusion limits for the $n-n'$ oscillation time constant reaching about $20~\text{s}$ over the mass-difference range $0.3 - 22~\text{peV}$. In parts of this parameter range, our limits exceed the model-dependent neutron-star-cooling bound, providing the first experimental constraints in this scenario that are more stringent than this astrophysical estimate.

Quasi-real photons as a probe of exotic nuclei

Coulomb excitation is an inelastic process in which either the target or the projectile is excited by the Coulomb interaction, which can equivalently be described as the absorption of a virtual photon. We discuss Coulomb excitation at relativistic energies, with particular emphasis on Coulomb dissociation, in which an excited projectile subsequently breaks up.

Toward a Measurement of the Higgs Boson Mass with Natural-Width Precision at FCC-ee

Higgs boson mass measurements with sub-10 MeV precision enable sub-percent determinations of Higgs boson couplings and prevent the Higgs boson mass from becoming a limiting input to electroweak fits. Probing the electron Yukawa coupling through resonant Higgs boson production requires a precision comparable to the Higgs boson natural width of approximately 4 MeV. Using the leptonic ZH recoil channels, we show that FCC-ee can reach a Higgs boson mass precision of 4 MeV, including statistical and systematic uncertainties, thereby enabling this unique measurement. We identify the detector and accelerator performance required to reach this precision.

A determination of the backscattering probability of low-energy antiprotons

It is commonly assumed that antiprotons impinging on a material surface annihilate promptly with the nuclei of the material. However, at kinetic energies of a few keV, this assumption may not hold. As with low-energy protons, electrons or positrons that can be reflected from a target, they may undergo large-angle Coulomb scattering before annihilation occurs, thereby appearing to be "backscattered" from the material surface. This backscattering fraction, largely unknown, is a crucial ingredient to the determination of the production cross-section of antihydrogen atoms in the GBAR experiment. This paper presents a determination of the probability that 4 and 6 keV antiprotons backscatter on the surface of a Micro-Channel Plate detector used for beam imaging at GBAR. No evidence for backscattering has been found and an upper limit of 14% at 68% confidence level has been set on this probability. The impact of backscattering on the determination of the number of antiprotons that participate in antihydrogen production in GBAR is also addressed.
