Conformal blocks for modular vertex algebras

Given a vertex operator algebra $V$ over $\mathbb{C}$, it is known how to define so-called sheaves of coinvariants and conformal blocks on the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ of stable, $n$-pointed, genus $g$ curves. We extend this theory to vertex algebras equipped with a notion of change of coordinates over any algebraically closed field. As a by-product of our arguments, we also show that a number of standard assumptions in these constructions can be removed, such as being $C_1$-cofinite or CFT-type.

Notions of equivalence among constant Yang–Baxter Operators: To $\infty$-Equivalence and Beyond

Recent advances in the classification of certain classes of Yang-Baxter operators through a holistic categorical approach has some of us wondering about ways to identify solutions. In particular the classification of charge conserving solutions in all dimensions inspires the question: \emph{what fraction of solutions are close to charge conserving solutions, under any reasonable notion of equivalence?} Of course reasonable and close to are open to interpretation. Here we suggest some precise notions of both, and prove that in dimension $2$, 10 out of 11 local families of solutions are close to charge conserving, and the one that misses is a singleton.

Higher-dimensional full vertex algebras and systems of conformally covariant correlation functions

We formulate a class of systems of Euclidean correlation functions for compact $d$-dimensional conformal field theories which are not necessarily unitary. We also introduce conformal $d$-vertex algebras, $d$-dimensional analogues of full vertex algebras, and prove that such an algebra is obtained from every system of conformally covariant correlation functions. Finally, for each $d\geq 2$, we construct a family of examples satisfying these axioms, corresponding to generalized free scalar fields. For $d>2$, this family contains both unitary and non-unitary examples.

Structure and Representations of a Diagrammatic Non-Commutative Tangloid Algebra

We introduce the tangloid algebra $\mathcal{T}_n$, a diagrammatic algebra arising from the extended tangloid category $\Ti$, and its subalgebra, the braidoid algebra $\mathcal{B}_n$. The construction begins with the unoriented tangloid category $UTC$, inspired by Turaev's theory of knotoids, which is obtained from the unoriented welded tangleoid category $UWTC$ by removing the welded relation while retaining the forbidden moves and imposing some additional relations. Within this framework, the braidoid category arises naturally as a subcategory of $UTC$. We then introduce the extended tangloid category $\Ti$ by adjoining a placeholder morphism $\emptyset$, which allows the generators to be extended to endomorphisms of a fixed $n$-box. The interaction of the placeholder morphism with the crossing morphisms gives rise to diagonal morphisms, $/$ and $\backslash$, which are used in the defining relations of $\Ti$. The corresponding extended braidoid category $\mathbf{Brd}_{\Ti}$ is realised as a subcategory of $\Ti$. For each $n\geq 0$, we then define the tangloid algebra $\mathcal{T}_n$ by linearising the endomorphism algebra $\operatorname{End}_{\Ti}(n)$, as a unital $\mathbb{C}$–algebra presented by diagrammatic generators and relations. We also define the braidoid subalgebra $\mathcal{B}_n$, which provides an algebraic framework for the theory of braidoids. We further introduce the reduced tangloid algebra $\delta\mathcal{T}_n$ by imposing two additional reduction relations for trivial knot and trivial knotoid components, and we construct a natural diagrammatic bilinear pairing on $\delta\mathcal{T}_n$ using diagrammatic reflection, composition, and closure. Our categorical and algebraic setting provides a theoretical framework for studying diagrammatic structures with intrinsic endpoints, namely knotoids, linkoids, and braidoids, and related diagram algebras.

Rectangular Cyclotomic Expansions of Colored HOMFLY-PT Polynomials

We prove the rectangular cyclotomic expansion conjecture of Kameyama, Nawata, Tao, and Zhang for reduced colored HOMFLY-PT polynomials of arbitrary zero-framed knots. We also prove their explicit double-twist formula for every rectangular color and all pairs of nonzero integer twist parameters. For each knot, we construct a double Newton expansion with coefficients in $\mathbb Z[A^{\pm1},q^{\pm1}]$. These coefficients are uniquely determined and independent of the width and height of the rectangular color. The construction uses finite-rank representation symmetries and integral interpolation. The double-twist formula follows from a simultaneous exterior-power comparison of the two four-point Casimir operators and the known one-row formula. Finite transition formulas express the double Newton coefficients of double-twist knots in terms of the prescribed twist coefficients.

Meromorphic open-string vertex algebras and twisted modules from Courant algebroids

We construct a sheaf of $\frac{1}{2}\mathbb{Z}$-graded meromorphic open-string vertex algebras from a transitive Courant algebroid $E$ equipped with a generalized metric and a chosen generalized Levi-Civita connection on a smooth manifold. Using a holonomy principle for transitive anchored bundles, we realize these algebras as parallel sections of a tensor algebra bundle built from bosonic-fermionic affinizations of $E$. For even-rank $E$ with suitable Clifford module bundle data, we construct a sheaf of canonically twisted modules containing the canonical weighted spinor bundle in weight zero. The associative algebra of parallel tensors acts on spinor sections through iterates of an $E$-connection combining covariant differentiation and Clifford multiplication, with mixed terms incorporating the action of the bosonic connection on fermionic tensors. Distinguished states built from the inverse Courant pairing and inverse generalized metric give vertex-operator components, acting on embedded spinor sections as the canonical Dirac generating operator, its formal adjoint, and their anticommutator, the generalized Hodge Laplacian. In the exact Courant case with three-form $H$ and the exterior algebra Clifford module, the operators specialize to $d-H\wedge$, its adjoint, and the twisted Hodge Laplacian, reducing to the ordinary de Rham and Hodge operators when $H=0$. This extends the vertex-operator realization of geometric differential operators from functions to weighted spinors and differential forms, within the program of studying two-dimensional supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models.

Diagrammatic bases from stratified normalization

In this article, we introduce a new rewriting method for computing hom-bases of diagrammatic categories. Our approach is based on stratified presentations, obtained by partitioning an equational presentation into strata according to the rewriting behavior of its relations. We establish modularity principles for termination and confluence in stratified rewriting systems with coefficients in a ring. We then introduce a completion procedure that transforms a stratified presentation into a normalized one, in which mixed interactions between successive strata are absorbed into the normalized rewriting rules, thereby inducing modularity of confluence. This leads to a stratified hom-basis theorem for diagrammatic categories. We illustrate the method by applying it to the $q$-Schur category, for which we construct a new hom-basis.

The dimension block of a spherical fusion category

Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a spherical fusion category with global dimension $D$. The Galois conjugates of the dimension character index a block of the $S$-matrix of the Drinfeld center, which we call the dimension block. We prove that for every character $\chi$ of $\mathrm{Gal}(\mathbb{Q}(D)/\mathbb{Q})$, the twisted sum $\sum_\sigma\chi(\sigma)/\sigma(D)$ has absolute value at most $e^{-1}\mathfrak{f}(\chi)^{-1/2}$, where $\mathfrak{f}(\chi)$ is the conductor of $\chi$ and $e$ is the order of the dimensional grading group of $\mathcal{C}$. As an application, we determine the possible global dimensions of spherical fusion categories below $\sqrt{5}$, extending the known classification up to $4\sqrt{3}/5$ of V.\ Ostrik and P.\ Etingof.

Isomorphism between the R-matrix and Drinfeld presentations of quantum affine superalgebra for type $\boldsymbol{A}$

In this paper, we establish an explicit isomorphism between Drinfeld and R-matrix presentations of the quantum affine superalgebra associated with the general linear Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}(m|n)$. This result can be viewed as a supersymmetric analogue of the isomorphism between two presentations of the quantum affine algebra $U_{q}(\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}(n)})$ proposed by Frenkel-Ding. Furthermore, employing the quantum Berezinian of $U_{q}(\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}(m|n))}$, we construct the R-matrix presentation of the quantum affine superalgebra $U_{q}(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}(m|n))}$ and prove the isomorphism between its R-matrix and Drinfeld presentations. Our proof based on the commutative relation between Gaussian generators, $\mathbb{A}$-form and quantum Berezinian.

Idempotents in the Temperley-Lieb Monoid and Other Categories

This paper examines idempotents in algebras and categories that arise from factorizations of the identity morphism. In the diagrammatic and combinatorial contexts considered here, these factorizations correspond to generalizations of meanders, where a meander is understood to be a curve in the plane that wanders transversely back and forth across a given straight line. By formulating the algebra of the Temperley-Lieb Monoid in terms of planar curve combinatorics, one can understand idempotents in the Temperley-Lieb Monoid in terms of meanders. Corresponding results are shown for the Brauer Monoid and for the Tangle Monoid and Tangle Category.

Cyclotomic factors and irreducibility of the denominators of $q$-deformed rational numbers

For $d\ge2$ the $q$-deformed modular group specialized at a primitive $d$-th root of unity is the triangle group of type $(2,3,d)$. Using this we determine the fractions $r/s$ for which the $d$-th cyclotomic polynomial divides the denominator $S_{r/s}(q)$ of the $q$-deformed rational number $[r/s]_q$. They form the orbit of $\infty$ under the normal closure of the translation $z\mapsto z+d$ in $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$. This proves a conjecture of Byakuno, Ren and Yanagawa, and shows that the congruences $s\equiv0$ and $r\equiv\pm1$ modulo $d$ characterize the divisibility exactly for $d\le5$. For $a\in\{2,3,4,6\}$ and $n>5a^2$ prime to $a$ we show that $S_{a/n}(q)$ is irreducible up to cyclotomic factors. Together with a computer check for small primes, this confirms a conjecture of Kogiso, Ren, Wakui, Yanagawa and the author for every prime $p$ and every $r$ prime to $p$ with $r\equiv\pm a$ or $ar\equiv\pm1\pmod p$.

A Hopf Algebraic Theory of the Quantum Magnusian

We develop a Hopf-algebraic theory of the graph coefficients arising in the quantum Magnus expansion. At the classical level, the graph expansion is governed by directed trees, whereas its quantum counterpart involves loop graphs, multiple edges, and different types of edge data. We introduce a contraction Hopf algebra of mixed quivers containing these physical diagrams and closed under contraction. On the Hopf subalgebra spanned by quivers, we define a character $e$ from normalized linear-extension data and a tadpole prescription, and let $\omega$ be its convolution inverse. Our main result is a universal closed formula for the connected function $\omega_c$ on every finite quiver. The formula is a finite sum over ordered set partitions of the vertex set and is valid without acyclicity or simplicity assumptions. We also give a local characterization: a two-vertex contraction identity, together with tadpole factorization, vanishing on disconnected graphs, and boundary data, determines $\omega_c$ uniquely. For acyclic quivers, the general formula reduces to a permutation formula whose coefficients depend only on descent numbers. We derive the same formula independently from the quantum Magnus expansion via operator products and Wick contractions, showing that its physical graph coefficients are governed by the convolution structure of the contraction Hopf algebra. As further consequences, we obtain a refined quantum Murua formula and orientation-sum identities related to Tutte and chromatic polynomials.

Inequivalent modular tensor categories with identical $S$, $T$ and $W$

It remains an open question whether the modular data $(S,T)$ together with the Whitehead-link matrix $W$ determine a modular tensor category up to ribbon equivalence. We answer negatively by constructing two braided-inequivalent Dijkgraaf–Witten modular categories for $(\mathbb Z/p\mathbb Z)^3$ for prime $p\ge5$ with identical $(S,T,W)$ and, more generally, identical Reshetikhin–Turaev invariants of all framed oriented links with at most two components under a single bijection of simple objects. The construction varies an alternating $3$-cocycle while fixing a quadratic cohomology class, using restriction to subgroups of rank at most two to match link invariants and the quadratic and alternating classes together to obstruct braided equivalence. A complete classification of modular tensor categories up to ribbon equivalence therefore requires invariants beyond those of colored framed links with at most two components. We also analytically evaluate an uncolored partition function on a closed oriented three-manifold that separates all $(p-1)/2$ equivalence classes in the family.

Relative dualizability and the cobordism hypothesis for defects

This paper compares two candidate notions of morphism in the setting of fully local topological field theory. A first description can be formulated in terms of defects of codimension $k$ separating a pair of defects of codimension $(k-1)$. Lurie's cobordism hypothesis with singularities identifies such defects with suitably dualizable $k$-morphisms in the target category. A second description can be formulated in terms of symmetric monoidal (op)lax natural transformations between the truncations of the source and target theories. We show that these two descriptions agree. The comparison rests on a criterion for when a $k$-morphism determines a codimension-$k$ defect, expressed as a one-sided iterated adjunctibility condition. Assuming the ordinary cobordism hypothesis, this comparison provides a reformulation of the cobordism hypothesis for defects in terms of systems of oplax natural transformations. We also apply the criterion to the higher Morita category, where it yields a reducibility theorem for modules over $E_n$-algebras: a module over an $(n+1)$-dualizable $E_n$-algebra $A$ is $n$-dualizable over $A$ if and only if its underlying $E_{n-1}$-algebra is $n$-dualizable.

On the Relation Between Non-Semisimple TQFTs

The goal of this paper is to clarify the relation between the Kerler-Lyubashenko TQFT $J_\mathcal{E}$ associated with the adjoint end $\mathcal{E}$ of a (not necessarily semisimple) modular category $\mathcal{C}$ and its renormalized version $V_\mathcal{E}$ based on the modified trace supported by the ideal $\mathrm{Proj}(\mathcal{C})$ of projective objects of $\mathcal{C}$. More precisely, we construct a $3$-dimensional ETQFT $\boldsymbol{\hat{A}}_\mathcal{E}$ that contains both $J_\mathcal{E}$ and $V_\mathcal{E}$. The ETQFT $\boldsymbol{\hat{A}}_\mathcal{E}$ is given by a $2$-functor whose source is the $2$-category of admissible $3$-dimensional cobordisms, and whose target is the $2$-category of finitely complete linear categories. We improve on earlier versions of the construction by dropping the admissibility condition for surfaces. By doing so, we obtain an ETQFT whose circle category $\boldsymbol{\hat{A}}_\mathcal{E}(\boldsymbol{S}^1)$ is equivalent to the category $\mathcal{C}$, as opposed to the ideal $\mathrm{Proj}(\mathcal{C})$.

Categorical spin-networks: state-sum invariants of 4-manifolds from higher-gauge theory

In this work, we define $(3+1)$-dimensional topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) and their lattice realizations with input data given by a pivotal fusion 2-category; more precisely, our framework applies in wider generality to presemisimple locally fusion pivotal tensor $2$-categories, which are equipped with a so-called shadow trace. We introduce a decoration of triangulated manifolds by the input data, and develop a $20j$-symbol formalism for computing 4-simplex scattering amplitudes. We verify the topological invariance of 20$j$-symbol summations under the 4-dimensional Pachner moves. Furthermore, we also construct explicitly a 3-dimensional Levin-Wen-type lattice Hamiltonian model realizing the state-sum invariant. Our construction can be understood as a higher-dimensional analogue of the spin-networks construction for the Turaev-Viro invariant. Examples arising from $2$-groups are discussed from the perspective of higher gauge theory.

The crystal of the categorified quantum group

A categorification of the crystal $B(\widetilde{U}_q(\mathfrak{g}))$ of the modified quantized enveloping algebra associated to a symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ is given. A crystal is constructed from a categorical $\mathfrak{g}$-action on abelian categories without finiteness conditions, and is used to construct the bicrystal structure on the set of self-dual indecomposable objects of the categorified quantum group. Crystals from Webster's generalized tensor product categorification are identified with tensor products of lowest and highest weight crystals. As an application, a categorification of the extremal weight module is obtained.

A $q$-Weyl Freeness Principle for Nichols Algebras and Pointed Hopf Algebras of Square-Free Dimension

Let $H$ be a pointed Hopf algebra of square-free dimension over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. We prove that either $H$ is a group algebra or $\dim H/|\G(H)|=p$, and that in the latter case $H$ belongs to exactly one of two explicit families of rank-one pointed Hopf algebras. We develop a truncated $q$-Weyl freeness principle for finite-dimensional Nichols algebras of quandle type. If $V=\bigoplus_{x\in X}\K e_x$, $X'\subsetneq X$ is a nonempty subquandle, $V'=\bigoplus_{x\in X'}\K e_x$, and $s\in X\setminus X'$, then $\mathcal B(V)\simeq\K[e_s]/(e_s^{m_s})\otimes C_{s,X'}\otimes\mathcal B(V')$ for some graded vector space $C_{s,X'}$, where $m_s$ is the nilpotency order of $e_s$; in particular, $(m_s)_z\,\mathcal H_{\mathcal B(V')}(z)\mid\mathcal H_{\mathcal B(V)}(z)$. In the non-group case, this yields a $p^2$-divisibility obstruction that rules out noncentral support for the infinitesimal braiding. Together with a graded-dual argument, the resulting rank-one reduction forces the diagram of $H$ to have dimension $p$.

Braidings, duoidal categories and pre-Cartier structures for bi(co)modules

We study braidings and infinitesimal braidings on categories of bi(co)modules and tetramodules, and their compatibility with duoidal structures. For an arbitrary coalgebra, we classify braidings on its category of bicomodules with the cotensor product in terms of canonical $R$-forms, dualizing the classification for bimodules obtained by Agore, Caenepeel, and Militaru. Every such braiding is a symmetry and admits only the zero infinitesimal braiding. We construct duoidal structures on categories of bi(co)modules and tetramodules over bimonoids in braided monoidal categories under suitable assumptions on equalizers and coequalizers. We then introduce pre-Cartier duoidal categories and their one-sided variants. We establish obstructions to compatible braidings for tetramodules, construct nonzero one-sided pre-Cartier structures on bi(co)modules, and give a pre-Cartier duoidal example with distinct monoidal products and a nonzero infinitesimal braiding.

Geometries of Quantum Field Theories

This is an English translation of a book originally published in Japanese by Saiensu-sha in 2015. The book is an introduction to the 3d-3d correspondence, the relation between 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories and the geometry of 3-manifolds, which arises from the compactification of the 6d $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ theory. The presentation is bottom-up rather than top-down: instead of starting from the 6d theory, we begin by asking what a quantum field theory is, and let the geometry emerge on its own. Along the way we discuss renormalization and low-energy effective theories, gauging as an operation which glues field theories together, the resulting $Sp(2n, \mathbb{Z})$-action on 3d theories, 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric theories and their dualities, the squashed three-sphere partition function and supersymmetric localization, duality domain walls of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories, quantum Teichmuller theory, complex Chern-Simons theory and the quantization of the moduli space of flat $SL(2, \mathbb{C})$-connections on 3-manifolds, with quantum dilogarithm functions as a recurring thread. The emphasis throughout is on geometric and algebraic structures which are invisible in a single field theory, and appear only in the theory space of quantum field theories. Appendices summarize supersymmetry in various dimensions, classical and quantum dilogarithm functions, and cluster algebras. Exercises with difficulty ratings are included in each chapter.
