Pointwise convergence of noncommutative ergodic averages along the primes

Let $\mathcal N$ be a von Neumann algebra equipped with a normal faithful semifinite trace, and let $\gamma$ be a trace-preserving automorphism of $\mathcal N$. We consider the ergodic averages along the prime numbers \[ A_N(x) := \frac1{|P_N|} \sum_{q\in P_N}\gamma^q(x), \qquad P_N:=\{q\leq N:q\ \text{is prime}\}. \] For every $1<p<\infty$, we prove a strong maximal inequality for $(A_N)_{N\geq2}$ on $L_p(\mathcal N)$ and that $A_N(x)$ converges bilaterally almost uniformly for every $x\in L_p(\mathcal N)$. The proof exploits the circle method and a noncommutative sampling principle. For the convergence result, Bourgain's commutative argument uses pointwise maximal functions and exceptional sets. These tools are not available in the noncommutative setting. Instead, we show that the tails of the ergodic averages tend to zero in $L_2(\mathcal N;\ell_\infty)$ and that the difference from the limit belongs to $L_2(\mathcal N;c_0)$. This gives the desired b.a.u. convergence, and provides a positive answer to one question left open in \cite{ChenHongWang+arXiv2024}.

Jensen' s trace inequality with equality condition and noncommutative Lamperti's theorem

Let $\mathcal M$ be a semifinite von Neumann algebra equipped with a semifinite faithful normal trace $\tau$. We establish Jensen's trace inequality in full generality and characterize its equality case, which answers two questions raised in [Kosaki2013] and [HaradaKosaki2008]. As an application, we derive noncommutative Lamperti-type inequalities and their equality conditions. Employing this result, we characterize linear isometries (not necessarily surjective) on a class of $F$-normed noncommutative Orlicz spaces, which provides a noncommutative Lamperti's theorem for linear isometries.

Simplicity and pure infiniteness for $\text{C}^*$-algebras associated with stabilizers of boundary actions

Given a discrete group $\Gamma$ acting on a compact space $X$, and a stabilizer subgroup $\Lambda\leq \Gamma$ of $X$, we use the Rieffel induction of covariant $(\Lambda, X)$-representations to study classes of representations induced by certain characters on $\Lambda$ and the $\text{C}^*$-algebras they generate. When $X$ is a $\Gamma$-boundary, we obtain new classes of simple, traceless group $\text{C}^*$-algebras. When the $\Gamma$-boundary $X$ is an extreme boundary, we show that the associated group $\text{C}^*$-algebras are also purely infinite, answering part of a question posed by Kalantar and Scarparo on $\text{C}^*$-algebras associated with Thompson's groups. The latter $\text{C}^*$-algebras are shown to be selfless in the sense of Robert.

Graphs of operators as points in the Grassmann manifold

We study the set $\Gamma$ of graphs of closed, densely defined operators in a Hilbert space $H$, regarded as a subset of the Grassmann manifold $P(H\times H)$ of orthogonal projections in $H\times H$. We show that the subset $\Gamma^b$ of graphs of bounded operators is the open unit ball of $P(H\times H)$ centered at the graph of the zero operator $P_0$ (which projects onto $H\times\{0\}$). This ball is diffeomorphic to $B(H)$ via the map $T\mapsto P_T$ ($=$ the projection onto the graph ${Gr(T)}$ of $T$). We show that graphs of unbounded closed operators lie at the boundary of $\Gamma$. We also study the existence and characteristics of minimal geodesics of $P(H\times H)$ joining two graphs $Gr(A)$, $Gr(B)$. If $A,B$ are selfadjoint, such a geodesic always exists, and we construct explicitly a distinguished exponent using the five-space decomposition associated to the pair of subspaces $Gr(A)$, $Gr(B)$. An explicit low-dimensional example shows that the geodesic joining two graphs need not remain inside $\Gamma$, i.e., does not consist entirely of graphs. We also relate graphs of compact operators to the restricted Grassmannian, and study the problem of common complements for pairs $Gr(S)$, $Gr(T)$, giving positive results when one operator is bounded or under lower boundedness conditions.

Property (SP) and Inclusions of C*-algebras

As a generalization of Gabe and Neagu's inclusions of real rank zero, we introduce a notion of Property (SP) for inclusions of C*-algebras. We begin the systematic study of SP-inclusions, establishing a topological description in the commutative setting and permanence under many constructions. We also extend known results about the permanence of Property (SP) for C*-algebras under classical symmetries to the setting of quantum symmetries; we show that Property (SP) for (simple, separable) C*-algebras is preserved under irreducible C*-discrete inclusions. Finally, we resolve (in the negative) a question raised by Gabe and Neagu about inclusions coming from Furstenburg boundaries. Namely, we show the existence of a countable, discrete, non-amenable group $G$ such that $C_r^*(G) \subseteq C(\partial_F G) \rtimes_r G$ is not an SP-inclusion (and therefore not an inclusion of real rank zero).

Kubo Formulas and Bulk-Edge Correspondence for Curved Boundaries

Strong topological insulators are classified by integer invariants which admit different real-space expressions. Inspired by recent work studying these invariants for spaces with curved boundaries, we revisit the problem of equivalence of the various expressions, including Fredholm index pairings and Kubo formulas involving half-space projections. Using Roe algebras and a variant of KK-theory suitable for non-separable $C^*$-algebras, we prove a general form of bulk-edge correspondence for the index pairing with a general position-space Dirac operator in the presence of arbitrary boundaries. For spaces coarsely equivalent to $\mathbb{R}^d$, we show that up to multiplicity, these pairings are equal to those obtained with the standard dual Dirac operator, with the multiplicity explicitly given as the topological degree of the symbol function. In addition, we prove a generalized Kubo formula which computes the general index pairing by a real-space formula.

Alternative-mean trace divergences: geometry, data processing, and barycenters

Let $f:(0,\infty)\to(0,\infty)$ be a nontrivial normalized operator monotone function and set $s=f'(1)$. We introduce the alternative-mean trace functional $$ \altPhi_f(A,B) :=\Tr(A\nabla_s B) -\Tr\!\left( f(A^{-1}\sharp B)\,A\,f(A^{-1}\sharp B) \right). $$ on the positive definite cone. We prove that $\altPhi_f$ is a quantum divergence in the sense of Bhatia–Gaubert–Jain whose diagonal Hessian induces a positive multiple of the Bures–Wasserstein Riemannian metric. We also establish the sharp comparison $$ s(1-s)d_{\rm BW}(A,B)^2 \le \altPhi_f(A,B) \le (1-s+s^2)d_{\rm BW}(A,B)^2. $$

On Topological Numerical Transitivity, C*-Transitivity and generalizations

Motivated by the concept of numerical hypercyclicity, in this paper, we introduce three new notions in linear dynamics: topological numerical transitivity, generalized numerical transitivity, C*-transitivity. The first notion is defined for operators on general Banach spaces, whereas the latter two are formulated in the setting of operators on Banach algebras. The concept of C*-transitivity is also applicable to operators on the space of Hilbert-Schmidt operators. We prove that these new notions are mutually different, and we also show that they differ from the standard notions in dynamics. In particular, while topological numerical transitivity implies numerical hypercyclicity, as we argue in the paper, we provide examples of numerically hypercyclic and strongly numerically hypercyclic operators that are not topologically numerically transitive. Also, we construct nonsupercyclic C* transitive and generalized numerically transitive operators on the C*-algebra of compact operators on a separable Hilbert space, as well as C*-transitive nonsupercyclic operators on the standard Hilbert C*-module. In addition, we study diagonal operators on finite-dimensional and separable Hilbert spaces, and we obtain complete characterizations of both numerical hypercyclicity and topological numerical transitivity in terms of coefficient-simplex criteria. Further, we provide some sufficient conditions for diagonal operators on the standard Hilbert C*-module to be C*-transitive. All these results are illustrated with concrete examples. At the end of the paper, we compare topological numerical transitivity and C*-transitivity with numerous standard notions in linear dynamics, and we prove that topological numerical transitivity and C*-transitivity genuinely differ from all these standard concepts in dynamics.

Algebras with Variable Operator-Valued Structural Constants and Their Applications

We introduce a new class of algebras with variable operator-valued structural constants and develop elements of the theory of monogenic functions in such algebras. Compatibility conditions for the structural operators are established. It is shown that the components of monogenic functions satisfy second-order operator-differential equations with variable coefficients, and converse results are proved. The proposed approach provides a constructive method for obtaining solutions of various differential, integro-differential, and functional-differential equations. Several illustrative examples are presented.

Isometries on algebras of locally measurable operators

Let $LS(\mathcal{M})$ be the algebra of locally measurable operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$, equipped with an $F$-norm defined via a dimension function and a probability measure. We prove that every bijective linear isometry between $LS(\mathcal{M})$ admits a canonical representation of the form $\Phi(x)=wJ(x)$, where $w$ is a unitary element and $J$ is a Jordan $^*$-isomorphism, which extends classical results such as the Banach–Stone theorem and Kadison's theorem. Under several structural assumptions on the underlying von Neumann algebras (including all type $\mathrm{II}_\infty$ and type $\mathrm{III}$ algebras, and all factors, and algebras with atomless centers), we prove the one-to-one correspondence between the $F$-norm and the pair $(\mu, D)$ of a probability measure and a dimension function, which fails for algebras with atomic centers.

Sufficient positive maps between von Neumann algebras: Rényi divergences

We prove recovery theorems for $\alpha$-$z$ Rényi divergences under normal unital positive maps between von Neumann algebras. Previous results in this setting required 2-positivity, while recent finite dimensional work showed that this assumption can be relaxed to mere positivity. Our proof uses sufficiency for JW*-subalgebras and $L^p$-spaces over them to characterize equality in the data processing inequality. As a further application of our methods, we solve a problem discussed by Haagerup and Stormer: Every conditional expectation of a von Neumann algebra onto a JW*-subalgebra factors through a conditional expectation onto the generated von Neumann subalgebra.

Compact Quantum Metric Spaces from Weakly Geodesic Length Functions on Hyperbolic Groups

We show that length functions on hyperbolic groups whose induced metrics are hyperbolic and weakly geodesic naturally give rise to compact quantum metric spaces, thus generalizing the result of Ozawa and Rieffel. As a result we obtain several new examples of compact quantum metric spaces, in particular arising from Green metrics associated with random walks on hyperbolic groups, and from proper cocompact isometric actions on proper geodesic hyperbolic spaces admitting a point with trivial stabilizer.

On the Formality of Configuration Spaces of $\mathbb{R}^{n'} \times \mathbb{C}^{n}$

This paper presents a complete classification of the formality of configuration spaces of $\mathbb{R}^{n'} \times \mathbb{C}^{n}$. We define a constructible de Rham-Dolbeault cohomology theory which provides a constructible CDGA (commutative differential graded algebra) model of $\Conf_m(\mathbb{R}^{n'} \times \mathbb{C}^{n})$. For $(n'=0,n\ge2)$ or $(n'=1,n\ge1)$, the CDGAs are non-formal. For $n'\ge2,n\ge1$, we establish an explicit quasi-isomorphism between the constructible CDGA and its cohomology by using a diagrammatic CDGA of admissible diagrams and a regularized configuration space integral, which leads to the formality. As an application, we show that the local operator algebra of a topological-holomorphic field theory on $\mathbb{R}^{n'} \times \mathbb{C}^{n}$ ($n'\ge2,n\ge1$) is homotopically equivalent to a higher dimensional analog of vertex algebras.

Isometries of Haagerup–Schultz algebras

We establish a version of the classical results concerning descriptions of isometries on $C^*$-algebras and noncommutative $L_p$-spaces due to Kadison (1951) and Yeadon (1981) in the setting of Haagerup–Schultz algebras. Isometric embeddings of noncommutative $L_p$-spaces into noncommutative symmetric spaces

We establish a noncommutative version of a familiar Johnson–Maurey–Schechtman–Tzafriri Theorem, by showing that for any $0 <p<2$ and a (not necessarily semifinite) von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ on a separable Hilbert space, if a symmetric quasi-Banach function space $E(0,1) $ containing the function $t\mapsto t^{-1/p}$, $0<t\le 1, $ then there exists a noncommutative probability space $(\mathcal{N},\sigma )$ such that $L_p(\mathcal{M})$ is isometric to a subspace of $E(\mathcal{N},\sigma)$. In particular, this answers two questions raised by Randrianantoanina in 2006.

Non-unitarizable representations of compact and discrete quantum groups

We study the similarity problem for representations of compact and discrete quantum groups. We first prove that every non-degenerate contractive representation of a compact or discrete quantum group is automatically unitary. Then, for compact quantum groups, we develop an interpolation method for constructing explicit non-unitarizable non-degenerate representations with norms arbitrarily close to $1$. In particular, this applies to all non-Kac compact quantum groups whose dual has subexponential growth, including the Drinfeld–Jimbo quantum groups $G_q$, as well as to the non-Kac free unitary quantum groups $U_F^+$ with $F\in\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbb{C})$. On the discrete quantum group side, we establish a quantum analogue of the classical lifting principle for non-unitarizable uniformly bounded representations. Combining this lifting principle with recent results on maximal Kac quantum subgroups, we construct explicit non-unitarizable non-degenerate representations with norms arbitrarily close to $1$ for all unitary free quantum groups $\mathbb FU_F$ and all non-amenable orthogonal free quantum groups $\mathbb FO_F$.

A Centroid Framework for Operator-Valued Haagerup Inequalities

We introduce a centroid-based block decomposition of the left-regular representation and use it to prove operator-valued Haagerup inequalities for finitely generated groups with centroid maps. The decomposition separates the three centroid growth conditions into distinct operator-norm contributions and, under a factorization hypothesis for the associated Schur multipliers, yields complementary lower bounds. For median groups of rank $\nu$, the centroid blocks are related to spherical operators, giving two-sided estimates with the explicit factor $\binom{\nu+r}{r}$; this applies in particular to right-angled Artin groups and to groups acting on finite-rank $\operatorname{CAT}(0)$ cube complexes. For finite-rank coarse median groups, we construct a coarse iterate median with error independent of the cardinality of the input set and obtain spherical-block estimates with factor $o(r^{1+\nu/2+\varepsilon})$ for every $\varepsilon>0$.

Geometric $K$-homology and operator $K$-theory for Hilbert manifolds

Poincaré duality is a classical theorem relating the homology and cohomology of closed oriented manifolds. This theorem has been extended to more general settings and to generalized (co)homology theories, including $K$-theory. In this paper, we construct an infinite-dimensional analogue of the $K$-theoretic Poincaré duality homomorphism. More precisely, for an infinite-dimensional Hilbert manifold $\mathcal{M}$, we construct a homomorphism $$K^{geo}_*(\mathcal{M})\to K_*(\mathcal{A}(\mathcal{M})),$$ where $K^{geo}_*(\mathcal{M})$ denotes the geometric $K$-homology of Baum and Douglas, and $\mathcal{A}(\mathcal{M})$ is a $C^*$-algebra associated to $\mathcal{M}$, based on a construction of Gong, Wu, and Yu. We also prove that the constructed homomorphism is non-trivial in certain cases.

Quantum cellular automata and invertible phases of matter

We introduce and study (fermionic and bosonic) invertible quasi-local algebras over uniformly locally finite metric spaces $X$ with infinite-dimensional local von Neumann algebras. We show that the group of Brauer equivalence classes of such algebras is isomorphic to both the group of phases of invertible states and the group of stable equivalence classes of quantum cellular automata over $X\times \mathbb{Z}$. Using K-theory of the symmetric monoidal category of invertible quasi-local algebras and bounded spread isomorphisms, we propose a definition of an $\Omega$-spectrum of invertible phases as conjectured by Kitaev. We then show that the $c=\frac{1}{2}$ chiral Majorana fermion net and the $(E_{8})_{1}$ conformal net provide Brauer non-trivial invertible quasi-local algebras, thus providing explicit constructions of non-trivial invertible states and quantum cellular automata on $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$. In addition, we show that the time-slice nets of rational diagonal conformal field theories admit lattice degrees of freedom, which implies the discretization of any holomorphic conformal net is invertible.

Weak Factorization and Product Systems Over Groupoids

We give a product-system description of generalized higher-rank graphs with the weak factorization property. For such a graph with degree-zero groupoid G, we prove that weak factorization is equivalent to multiplication inducing coherent bijections between balanced products of its homogeneous G-G-bisets. Consequently, generalized higher-rank graphs with fixed degree-zero groupoid are equivalent to normalized product systems of groupoid bisets over N^k. For countable left-cancellative graphs, these bisets linearize canonically to product systems of C*(G)-correspondences. Finite alignment implies compact alignment, and the resulting Nica-Toeplitz algebra agrees canonically with Spielberg's full category algebra. Under row-finiteness modulo G and the no-sources condition, the corresponding Cuntz-Pimsner quotient is the boundary groupoid algebra; with injective left actions, the same conclusion holds for the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra. We also characterize the R-condition by the existence of a strict multiplicative splitting and relate such splittings to higher-rank graph/groupoid Zappa-Szep products. A cancellative rank-two example shows that strict splittings need not exist.

Complemented Copies of $c_{0}$ in Positive Tensor Products of Banach Lattices

A result of Cembranos states that a non-trivial injective tensor product of a $C$-space contains a complemented copy of $c_{0}$, and in particular fails the Grothendieck property. We establish a positive analogue of the Cembranos theorem for tensor products of Banach lattices. If $E$ and $F$ are infinite dimensional Banach lattices, with $E$ containing $c_{0}$ and $E^{\ast}$ or $F^{\ast}$ having the bounded positive approximation property, then the Wittstock tensor product $E\widetilde{\otimes}_{\vert{\varepsilon}\vert}F$ contains a complemented copy of $c_{0}$. If $F$ is in addition reflexive, then $E\widetilde{\otimes}_{\vert{\varepsilon}\vert}F$ fails the positive Grothendieck property.

Graded face lifts and free extreme points of free spectrahedra

A free spectrahedron is the matricial solution set of a free linear matrix inequality $L_A(X) = I-A_1 \otimes X_1 - \dots - A_g \otimes X_g \succeq 0$. In this dimension-free setting, free extreme points play the role of classical extreme points. In particular, every bounded real free spectrahedron is the matrix convex hull of its free extreme points. In this qualitative sense, free extreme points of free spectrahedra are abundant. However, quantifications of this abundance have remained elusive. In particular, outside simplices, it is not known whether there exist bounded real free spectrahedra that have finitely many free extreme points. A necessary condition for having finitely many free extreme points is that the classical spectrahedron defined by $L_A(x) \succeq 0$ is a polytope. We strengthen this necessary condition through two constructions. First, we provide a geometric construction of an infinite family of free extreme points at the second level of the maximal matrix convex set over a polygon with at least four sides. Second, we develop a graded face lifting technique for general bounded real free spectrahedra, which allows us to construct free extreme points of the full spectrahedron from free extreme points of the graded face lift. As corollaries, we obtain obstructions to minimal matrix convex sets over polytopes being free spectrahedra and show that much of the scalar extreme-point geometry of maximal matrix convex sets over polytopes can be captured by higher-level free extreme points.
