Extremal Asymmetric Depth of Planar Graphs and Hidden Near-Mirror Symmetries of IPR Fullerenes

Although almost all graphs are asymmetric – having no nontrivial global automorphisms – they may still possess local symmetries in the form of isomorphisms between induced subgraphs, i.e., partial automorphisms. We study such local symmetries via asymmetric depth, defined in terms of the maximum rank of a nontrivial partial automorphism. We prove a tight upper bound on asymmetric depth in the class of planar graphs and identify the extremal graphs: duals of IPR fullerenes attain the maximum already on $47$ vertices. Our main structural result concerns the IPR fullerenes that are neither maximally asymmetric nor symmetric. In such a cage no purely local action realises a low asymmetric depth, and we show that the map which does realise it cannot be confined to a small part of the cage either: neither to a single face, nor behind an interface of at most $5-k$ edges, $k \le 3$ being the deficiency. A cage of asymmetric depth $2$ or $3$ is therefore not asymmetric in one place; it carries a broken symmetry invisible to its automorphism group. Such cages are rare – under $2\%$ of the asymmetric IPR fullerenes at $n = 118$. In all $727$ of them the largest partial automorphism is a near-mirror reflection, which we state as an explicit conjecture. We also extend the asymmetric depth bound to graphs of higher genus.

The binary actions of sporadic groups

An action of a group is binary if it induces the group of automorphisms of some homogeneous edge-coloured directed graph. In this paper we study the quasisimple groups $G$ with $G/Z(G)$ a sporadic simple group—we produce a complete classification of their binary actions.

The Borovik-Cherlin conjecture holds in ACF

We show that every faithful, transitive, and generically $(n+2)$-transitive action of a connected group $G$ on an irreducible variety $X$ of dimension $n > 0$, all defined over an algebraically closed field $F$, is isomorphic to the natural action of the projective linear group $PGL_{n+1}(F)$ on the projective space $\mathbb{P}^n(F)$. More precisely, we establish the Borovik-Cherlin conjecture for permutation groups $(G,X)$ definable in models of $ACF$.

Baumslag-Solitar Subgroups Obstruct Model Companions for Fields with Group Actions

We prove that if a group $G$ contains a Baumslag-Solitar group $\mathrm{BS}(m,n)$, with $mn\neq0$, then the theory of fields with a $G$-action has no model companion. In particular, every group containing $\mathbb{Z}^2\cong\mathrm{BS}(1,1)$ has no model companion for its field actions, resolving a conjecture of Beyarslan and Kowalski. Consequently, there are no model companions for field actions of $\mathbb{Q}^2$, Thompson's groups $F,T,V$, or Higman's group. Our argument adapts Hrushovski's method for two commuting automorphisms. The key modification is the cyclotomic condition $\theta_q$, which removes the need to prescribe a non-trivial action on a root of unity and thereby makes Hrushovski's method applicable after passing from a subgroup to an ambient group.

On embeddings of the difference graph of the intersection power graph and the power graph

The power graph of a finite group $G$ is a simple undirected graph with vertex set $G$ and two vertices are adjacent if one is a power of the other. The intersection power graph of a finite group $G$ is a simple undirected graph with vertex set $G$ and two vertices $x$, $y$ are adjacent if $\langle x\rangle \cap \langle y \rangle \neq \{e\}$. The difference graph $\mathcal{D}(G)$ of a finite group $G$ is the difference of the intersection power graph and power graph with all isolated vertices removed. We characterized all the finite nilpotent groups $G$ except $2$-group such that the difference graph is planar. Further, we determine all the finite nilpotent groups whose difference graph has genus at most $2$. Moreover, we prove that there does not exist any finite group whose difference graph is projective planar.

On the Self-Similarity of Permutational Wreath Products and Their Embedding into Finitely Presented Simple Groups

In this work, we study the self-similarity of permutational wreath products of the form \(A \wr_X G\), where \(A\) is a finitely generated abelian group and \(G\) is a self-similar group (the permutational wreath product \(A \wr_X G\) is also known as a lamplighter group). In the case where \(G\) is a non-torsion contracting group, we prove that, under certain conditions, the Scott–Röver–Nekrashevych group \(V_m(\mathbb{Z}^d \wr_X G)\) is finitely presented and virtually simple. Moreover, we prove that \(\mathbb{Z}^d \wr_X G\) embeds into a finitely presented simple group. Furthermore, this provides a new family of groups that satisfy the Boone–Higman conjecture.

The Multiorbital Bivariate Chromatic Polynomial: A Subgroup-Lattice Refinement

We introduce the multiorbital bivariate chromatic polynomial F_\Gamma(G;x,y) = \sum_{H\leq G}\frac{1}{|H|}\sum_{h\in H}P_{\Gamma/h}(x,y), which aggregates the orbital bivariate chromatic polynomials associated with all subgroups of a finite group acting on a graph. We derive the equivalent element-wise representation F_\Gamma(G;x,y) = \sum_{g\in G}c_G(g)P_{\Gamma/g}(x,y), where c_G(g) = \sum_{\langle g\rangle\leq H\leq G}\frac{1}{|H|}. The coefficient function depends only on the cyclic subgroup generated by the element and is constant on conjugacy classes. This yields decompositions by cyclic subgroups and conjugacy classes and an interpretation in terms of the incidence algebra of the subgroup lattice. After normalization, the coefficients define a probability distribution obtained by choosing a subgroup uniformly and then an element uniformly from that subgroup. We also establish diagonal multiplicativity for disjoint unions and a weighted cycle-index expression for edgeless graphs. A further contribution concerns the distinguishing power of the orbital bivariate chromatic polynomial. We answer a question of Dohmen and Lange-Geisler affirmatively by exhibiting two non-isomorphic graphs, P_3 and K_2 \mathbin{\dot\cup} K_1 under C_2-actions, with identical orbital bivariate chromatic polynomials. The two actions nevertheless have different multiorbital bivariate chromatic polynomials. Thus the multiorbital polynomial is not determined by the orbital bivariate polynomial, whereas the converse question remains open.

Acylindrical Hyperbolicity and Pure Conjugating Automorphisms in Graph Products of Groups

We study graph products of groups over defining graphs of arbitrary cardinality from two closely related viewpoints. First, we characterize acylindrical hyperbolicity. If the defining graph is irreducible, has at least two vertices, and has a finite star base, then every parabolically full subgroup is either virtually cyclic or acylindrically hyperbolic. For vertex-full subgroups the finite star base condition is also necessary. In particular, the graph product itself is acylindrically hyperbolic exactly when the graph has a finite star base and the group is not virtually cyclic, or equivalently is not the infinite dihedral group. We also give the corresponding classification for reducible defining graphs. Second, motivated by our earlier work on countable right-angled Coxeter groups, we study pure conjugating automorphisms in the topology of pointwise convergence. We prove that they are topologically generated by finite-support factorwise automorphisms and partial conjugations, and establish closedness, density, exact-equality, and discreteness results. The same finite star base condition that appears in the acylindrical hyperbolicity criterion governs closedness and discreteness in the star-connected case; for arbitrary graphs, its natural refinement is the existence of a finite component witness set. Finally, for graph products of abelian groups we obtain a canonical topological semidirect decomposition of the pure conjugating automorphism group.

Depth-1 expanders on the unitary group and applications

We construct a constant-degree and constant-gap quantum expander on $n$ qubits where each unitary can be implemented by a depth-$1$ and 1D circuit of Pauli or CNOT gates. We provide two applications of this expander. First, we use it to construct a family of frustration-free 1D Hamiltonians whose ground states obey the entanglement-gap relation $S = \Theta(\Delta^{-1/2})$; this is believed to be optimal, but achieving it had been open. Second, we use it to provide a streaming protocol that tests for closeness to a class of 1D volume-law entangled states. Moreover, we extend our quantum expander to a constant-degree and constant-gap expander on the unitary group where each unitary is a single $T$ gate, a single $T^{\dagger}$ gate, or a depth-$1$ Clifford circuit. This implies that a random sequence of unitaries from the expander yields a gapped walk on a dense subgroup of the unitary group. This improves upon previous work by Bourgain and Gamburd which did not control the dependence of the gap on the dimension.

As an application, this result, combined with the work of Bader, Furman, Gelander and Monod, gives an affirmative answer to their Question 4.1: Kazhdan's property $(T)$ implies property $(T_X)$ whenever $X$ is a closed subspace or a quotient of a real $L_p$-space, for every $1<p<\infty$.

Common neighbour conjectures for Saxl graphs fail at every base size

For a finite permutation group, a base is a set of points with trivial pointwise stabiliser, and the generalised Saxl graph records which pairs of points lie together in a base of minimum size. Burness and Giudici conjectured that any two vertices of the Saxl graph of a primitive group of base size two have a common neighbour, and Freedman, Huang, Lee and Rekvényi extended this conjecture to arbitrary base size. We disprove both. For each integer $B\ge2$ we construct infinitely many primitive groups of base size $B$ whose generalised Saxl graphs contain two nonadjacent vertices with no common neighbour. At base size two, where this is the usual Saxl graph, we obtain three further infinite families, one each of affine, product and twisted wreath type, so the conjecture fails in three of the five O'Nan–Scott types; in the affine and product type families the Saxl graphs have diameter exactly three. This answers Problem~21.29 in the Kourovka Notebook in the negative. In the positive direction, we prove the Burness–Giudici conjecture for every primitive affine group whose point stabiliser is almost quasisimple of sporadic type, completing work of Lee and Popiel. We conjecture that no base-two counterexample of almost simple or diagonal type exists.

Stabilizers in Coxeter groups with a transpositional action

We study simply-laced Coxeter groups whose Coxeter diagram is the line graph $\mathcal{L}\Gamma$ of some simple graph $\Gamma$; such groups act on the set of vertices of the graph by transpositions. Our goal is to describe the point stabilizer of this action in detail. For any tree $\Sigma$, we show that the stabilizer is a finite-index reflection subgroup, and identify its Coxeter diagram, thereby discovering finite-index embeddings of Coxeter groups $W(\mathcal{L}^{[2]}\Sigma) \hookrightarrow W(\mathcal{L}\Sigma)$ for any tree $\Sigma$, including infinitely many cases where the stabilizer itself is simply-laced.

Properly proximal countable measured groupoids

We introduce the notion of proper proximality for countable measured groupoids, extending the corresponding notion for countable groups. We prove that this groupoid property is equivalent to a strengthened form of relative proper proximality for the associated groupoid von Neumann algebra. We investigate permanence properties and show, in particular, that proper proximality is preserved under finite direct products, formation of transformation groupoids, and measure equivalence. We also identify broad classes of properly proximal groupoids, including transverse measured groupoids and free product groupoids, and prove that inner amenable groupoids are never properly proximal.

Accessible CAT$(-1)$ groups of critical exponent less than one

Let $X$ be proper CAT$(-1)$ and let $\Gamma\le\Isom(X)$ be finitely generated and discrete. The sharp structural theorem states that, if $\Gamma$ is accessible over finite subgroups and $\delta_X(\Gamma)<1$, then $\Gamma$ is geometrically finite and virtually free, has a finite graph of groups with finite edge groups and virtually cyclic infinite vertex groups, and $\partial\Gamma\to\Lambda_\Gamma$ collapses exactly their conjugate two point boundaries. The result is hereditary, and below $1/2$ every finitely generated subgroup is convex-cobounded (\cref{thm:accessible-main}). Hence non-virtually-free accessible groups have $\delta_X(\Gamma)\ge1$ (\cref{cor:accessible-gap}). Consequences cover finitely presented groups, groups with uniformly bounded finite-subgroup orders, characteristic-zero linear groups, and Kleinian groups, also infinite parabolic-free Kleinian groups have finite-index classical Schottky subgroups (\cref{cor:accessibility-extension,cor:linear-groups,cor:kleinian-classical}). Hence we cover substantial larger class than \cite{LiuWang2023},\cite{Hou2001}, also see \cref{rem:strictness-sharpness}. Finally, we also state consequences for finite JSJ representatives and hierarchies (\cref{thm:JSJ,thm:hierarchy,cor:hierarchy-dimension}).

Detecting Cohomological Dimension Three in Free-by-Demuškin Pro-$p$ Groups

Let \[1\longrightarrow N\longrightarrow G\longrightarrow D\longrightarrow1\] be exact, with $N\neq1$ free pro-$p$ of arbitrary rank and $D$ Demuškin. Writing $W=N/\Phi(N)$, we prove \[H^3(G,\mathbb{F}_p)^\vee\simeq W^D,\qquad \textrm{cd}_p G=3\text{ if and only if }W^D\neq0.\] Thus dimension three is detected on the first Frattini layer of the free kernel. Finite-rank kernels always satisfy the criterion, so a dimension drop requires an infinite-rank kernel, while the criterion remains stable under passage to open subgroups. On the fixed-point-free locus $W^D=0$, the remaining dimension-one/two alternative is governed by $H^1(D,W^\vee)$ together with the Hochschild–Serre transgression. Dualizing the latter produces a relation-defect class in the topological coinvariants of $W$, which admits an explicit description in terms of a lifted defining relation of the Demuškin quotient. This yields a complete criterion for the lower-dimensional branch and separates the top-degree fixed-point obstruction from the extension data controlling dimensions one and two.

Resultant of an equivariant polynomial system with respect to a direct product of $r$ symmetric groups

In this paper we study the resultant of systems of homogeneous multivariate polynomials which are equivariant under the action of a direct product of symmetric groups. We first treat, in detail, the case of a product of two symmetric groups, and establish a decomposition formula for the resultant of such systems. We then show that this decomposition, together with the underlying combinatorics, extends to an arbitrary (finite) direct product of $r$ symmetric groups. Thanks to these decomposition formulas, we prove that the discriminant of a multivariate homogeneous polynomial invariant under a direct product of $r$ symmetric groups splits into a product of resultants of smaller size that are easier to compute.

Relative property (T) for uniformly bounded representations

For pairs $(G,H)$, where $G$ is a locally compact group and $H$ is a closed subgroup of $G$, we introduce analogous versions of the full group $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra and the Fourier–Stieltjes algebra for uniformly bounded representations. We use these objects to characterise relative property (T) in this more general setting in terms of Kazhdan projections and invariant means. We also show that, for semidirect products of the form $G=H\ltimes N$, where $N$ is a nilpotent group, relative property (T) for the pair $(G,N)$ is equivalent to its uniformly bounded version. We first prove this result when $N$ is abelian, and then proceed by studying the behaviour of relative property (T) under quotients by central subgroups, thereby extending a theorem of Serre to the uniformly bounded setting.

Gallagher's Theorem for Real-valued Brauer Characters

Let $G$ be a finite group, let $N$ be a normal subgroup of $G$, and let $\theta$ be an irreducible $p$-Brauer character of $N$, for a prime $p$. It is well known that the number of irreducible Brauer characters of $G$ lying over $\theta$ equals the number of $p$-regular $\theta$-good conjugacy classes of $G_{\theta}/N$. In this note we express the number of real-valued irreducible Brauer characters of $G$ lying over $\theta$ in terms of the $p$-regular $\theta$-good conjugacy classes of $G_{\theta}/N$. This is a modular analogue of one of the main results in a recent paper (arXiv:2301.01177) by John Murray.

Higher Massey Products in Demuškin Variations: Support Blocks, One-Relator Reduction, and a Five-Fold Vanishing Case

Blumer and Quadrelli introduced a family $\mathcal{F}_2$ of two-relator pro-$p$ groups obtained from a Demuškin group by imposing the commutativity of two generators which are not paired in the Demuškin relation. They proved the triple and quadruple Massey vanishing properties and asked whether the same holds in every length. We introduce the $z$-profile \(v_h=(\alpha_h(z_1),\alpha_h(z_2))\in\Fp^2\) of a defined $n$-fold Massey product. Definability forces $\det(v_h,v_{h+1})=0$, so the nonzero profile entries decompose into support blocks carrying projective directions in $\PP^1(\mathbb{F}_p)$. After the known endpoint reduction, profiles with exactly $r$ blocks are counted by $\binom{n-1}{2r}$, and $r$ blocks first occur in length $2r+1$. We also prove an all-length conditional reduction for Dwyer's lifting problem: if the added commuting relator can be made exact in a lift, then the remaining central defect of the Demuškin relator can be removed by an endpoint correction. The correction preserves the power term $x_1^q$ for every parameter allowed in $\mathcal{F}_2$. In length five, this yields vanishing whenever all three interior profile vectors $v_2,v_3,v_4$ are nonzero, for every prime $p$. The resulting classification identifies the remaining five-fold support types and the compatibility mechanisms governing them.

Generalized Graph Compositions with Applications to Difference Graphs of Finite Groups

The difference graph $D(G)$ of a finite group $G$ is obtained from the edge difference between its intersection power graph and power graph, after deleting isolated vertices. This graph has already been studied, with sufficient conditions for connectedness and a diameter bound $6$ for finite groups satisfying those conditions. We use generalized graph composition to reduce $D(G)$ to a graph $B(G)$ on the cyclic subgroups of $G$, so that connectedness and diameter are determined by the subgroup structure of $G$. We obtain a general criterion for the non-emptiness of $B(G)$ in terms of branching subgroups and b-normality, and characterize its connectedness for finite $p$-groups, non-cyclic finite abelian groups, and non-abelian groups with both trivial and non-trivial center. Combined with the previously established cyclic-group case, this gives a complete characterization of non-emptiness and connectedness of difference graphs for all finite groups. The successive structural cases lead naturally to the sharp diameter bounds $2,3,4,$ and $5$. For centerless non-abelian groups, connectedness is governed either by a unique branching subgroup or by an auxiliary graph $\mathcal A(G)$; in the latter case \[ \operatorname{diam}\mathcal A(G)-1 \leq \operatorname{diam}B(G) \leq \max\{4,\operatorname{diam}\mathcal A(G)+1\}, \] and both bounds are sharp.

Boundary Dynamics, Cubical Actions, and Infinite Girth

We develop two methods for proving infinite girth from boundary dynamics. First, we use topologically free extreme boundary actions to give a boundary-dynamical proof of infinite girth for finitely generated acylindrically hyperbolic groups. The second combines Nakamura's criterion with, respectively, flag-space and Roller-boundary dynamics, yielding infinite-girth results for semisimple $S$-algebraic groups and for essential non-elementary actions on finite-dimensional, second countable, non-Euclidean CAT(0) cube complexes. We also prove that every finitely generated large group has infinite girth, thereby answering a question of Akhmedov and Mishra.

Finitely generated positive cones in $F_n \times \mathbb{Z}$

We construct, for every even $n \ge 2$, a positive cone on $F_n \times \mathbb{Z}$ that is finitely generated as a semigroup, extending the previously known construction for $n = 2$. Malicet, Mann, Rivas and Triestino proved that $F_n \times \mathbb{Z}$ admits an isolated left-order if and only if $n$ is even. Since every finitely generated positive cone determines an isolated left-order, for $n \ge 2$, the group $F_n \times \mathbb{Z}$ admits a finitely generated positive cone if and only if $n$ is even.
