Corrigendum to "A Characterization of the Unit Group in Z[T x C_2]"

We correct Lemma 3.6 and Theorem 3.7 of T.~Bilgin, O.~Kusmus, and R.~M.~Low, \emph{A Characterization of the Unit Group in $\mathbb Z[T\times C_2]$}, Bull.\ Korean Math.\ Soc.\ 53 (2016), no. 4, 1105-1112. In particular, the corrected statement of Theorem 3.7 is that $U_1\bigl(\Z[T\times C_2]\bigr) \cong [F_{33}\rtimes F_5]\rtimes[T\times C_2]. $

A Determination of $B$-groups of Order $p^4$

A group $H$ is said to be a $B$-group if whenever a primitive permutation group $G$ contains a regular subgroup isomorphic to $H$, then $G$ is doubly transitive. Going as far back as William Burnside, several authors have investigated whether certain families of groups are $B$-groups. Using the O'Nan-Scott Theorem as our starting point, we classify the $B$-groups of order $p^4$ where $p$ is a prime.

A $\sigma$-McKay theorem for $\pi$-separable groups

We prove a Hall $\sigma$-subgroup analogue of the McKay conjecture for $\pi$-separable groups proposed by G. Navarro. This result simultaneously generalizes the classical McKay conjecture and its $\pi$-separable version. More precisely, if $G$ is $\pi$-separable, $p$ is a prime and $\sigma=\pi\cup\{p\}$, then it is known that there exists $H$ a Hall $\sigma$-subgroup of $G$. In this case, we prove that $|{\rm Irr}_{\sigma'}(G)|=|{\rm Irr}_{\sigma'}(\mathbf{N}_{G}(H))|$.

Linear isoperimetric filling inequalities in Hadamard spaces at and above the asymptotic rank

Reformulated in terms of the asymptotic rank, a conjecture by Gromov predicts a linear isoperimetric filling inequality in all dimensions greater than or equal to the asymptotic rank of a Hadamard space, in contrast to the Euclidean-type nonlinear behavior below this threshold. We prove the predicted linear inequality for Hadamard spaces with finite asymptotic Nagata dimension and finite asymptotic rank. More precisely, every integral cycle of dimension at or above the asymptotic rank admits a filling whose mass is bounded linearly in the mass of the cycle. Our proof is based on a new self-improvement mechanism for Wenger's sub-Euclidean growth theorem. This approach upgrades the asymptotic rank-one result by Wenger and the recent asymptotic rank-two result by Lang, Stadler, and Urech from exponents arbitrarily close to one to the optimal linear exponent. Moreover, the result extends to arbitrary finite asymptotic ranks.

The kernel of the Birman-Craggs-Johnson homomorphism

For surfaces of genus $g \geq 3$ with at most one boundary component, we give explicit generating sets for the kernel of the Birman-Craggs-Johnson homomorphism and the commutator subgroup of the Torelli group. As an application, we give a new proof of Johnson's calculation of the abelianization of the Torelli group.

A note on normal generation and the first $\ell^2$-betti number

In $2011$, Osin and Thom conjectured that the first $\ell^2$-Betti number of a torsion-free discrete group is bounded above by the normal rank of the group minus one. The conjecture has surprising consequences for some fundamental problems in group theory and topology. These include the Wiegold problem on perfect groups, the Levin conjecture, the torsion-free case of the Kervaire conjecture, and an important special case of the Whitehead asphericity conjecture. In this article, we construct for each $n\in \mathbb{N}$ a countable torsion-free group $\Gamma_n$ such that $\beta^{(2)}_1(\Gamma_n)=n$ and so that the normal rank, $n(\Gamma_n)$, equals one. This disproves the conjecture. Our counterexamples are locally free and hence locally indicable. However, they are not finitely generated.

Asymptotic enumeration of minimally transitive permutation groups

We prove that Pyber's upper bound $2^{O(n\log(n))}$ for the number of minimally transitive subgroups of $S_n$ is best possible along the powers of every fixed prime, even when the groups are counted up to permutational isomorphism. As a byproduct, our construction shows that, along the powers of every fixed prime, the maximum order of a minimally transitive permutation group of degree $n$ is $2^{\Theta(n)}$. For completeness, we also present Pyber's previously unpublished proof of his upper bound. We further deduce that the numbers of labelled vertex-transitive graphs and digraphs of order $n$ are both $2^{\Theta(n\log(n))}$, and discuss the implications of our results for approaches to the McKay–Praeger conjecture.

Zeta renormalization and pressure at infinity for an infinitely cusped tree lattice

We study weighted periodic-orbit zeta functions for an infinitely cusped tree lattice $Y_q$, where $q\ge2$ is even and the quotient is a one-sided comb. The global Euler product fails coefficientwise because infinitely many primitive cycles have length four. A first-return determinant at a finite directed-edge set nevertheless exists, and stationary Schur elimination gives an algebraic formula for the root local zeta and its dominant poles. For the two-step multiplicity potential we compute the Gurevich pressure $P_G=2\log(q+1)$ and pressure at infinity $P_\infty=\log(4q)$, yielding strong positive recurrence and exponential local-orbit asymptotics. The height-damped transition operator is trace class. After subtraction of an explicit integrated-pressure counterterm, the inverse Fredholm determinant has a locally uniform finite part, expressed by a convergent dilogarithmic product and covariant under changes of height.

Word length, Morse theory, and Vietoris-Rips complexes

We present a discrete Morse theoretic approach to proving high connectivity or contractibility of a Vietoris-Rips complex using distance to a fixed point as an initial measurement. In particular we focus on the case of a finitely generated group using word length. As a proof-of-concept application we prove that $\mathcal{VR}_2(A_\Gamma)$ is contractible for $A_\Gamma$ a right-angled Artin group on a triangle-free graph $\Gamma$. We also prove an interesting sufficient condition for a group to be finitely presented that only requires checking connectivity of certain finite complexes.

A condition of admissibility for generalized Alexander quandles

A typical example of a quandle is the conjugation quandle. A quandle is said to be admissible if it is isomorphic to a conjugation quandle. We study the admissibility problem for quandles, that is, determining whether a given quandle is admissible. In particular, we focus on generalized Alexander quandles, which are groups equipped with quandle structures defined by group automorphisms. In this paper, we provide a sufficient condition for admissibility in terms of geometric properties of quandles: namely, if every antipodal set in each algebraically connected component consists of a single point, then the quandle is admissible. This result generalizes previous results on generalized Alexander quandles.

Complete Mappings of Semigroups

A complete mapping of a semigroup $S$ is a bijection $\alpha\colon S\to S$ such that the map $\theta\colon S\to S$ defined by $x\theta=x\cdot x\alpha$ is also a bijection. Equivalently, it determines a transversal of the multiplication table of $S$. Complete mappings connect group theory, Latin squares, and cryptography, and their existence for finite groups was characterized by the resolution of the Hall–Paige conjecture. In this paper, we develop the corresponding theory for finite semigroups. We prove that every finite semigroup admitting a complete mapping is regular and that the problem reduces to principal factors. We classify the existence of a complete mapping in Rees matrix semigroups without zero, give a Hall-type criterion for Rees $0$-matrix semigroups over groups with complete mappings, and prove sufficient conditions for Rees $0$-matrix semigroups whose maximal subgroups do not have complete mappings. As the main application of the Rees $0$-matrix analysis, we show that $T_n$ has a complete mapping if and only if $n=1$ or $n\geq 4$. Equivalently, $T_n$ has a complete mapping if and only if the same holds for $S_n$. We prove that the full linear monoid of a finite-dimensional vector space has a complete mapping except in dimension $1$ over a field of odd order and in dimension $2$ over $\mathbb F_2$. We also prove that the partition monoid $\mathcal P_n$ has a complete mapping if and only if $n=1$ or $n\ge4$, and that every finite aperiodic regular $*$-semigroup has a complete mapping. As a consequence, the planar partition, Motzkin and Jones monoids have complete mappings. The paper concludes with open problems.

The Isaacs-Navarro-Wolf conjecture

The Isaacs–Navarro–Wolf conjecture states that if $G$ is a finite solvable group and $x$ is an element of $G$ such that $\chi(x)$ does not vanish for all irreducible characters $\chi$ of $G$, then $x$ must be contained in some nilpotent normal subgroup. In this paper we present a proof of the Isaacs–Navarro–Wolf conjecture that was discovered with the use of artificial intelligence systems.

Free left $h$-Ehresmann semigroups

The class of left $h$-adequate semigroups sits between the classes of left ample and left Ehresmann semigroups. Whilst free objects in related classes have descriptions in terms of directed trees, free left $h$-adequate semigroups have yet only been described in terms of Rees quotients of free products. Here, we reintroduce the class of (left) $h$-Ehresmann semigroups, show their free objects coincide with free (left) $h$-adequate semigroups, and give a description of these free objects in terms of directed trees. We use our new description in investigating various properties of these structures, including finitary conditions of recent interest.

Warped cones associated to isometric free actions do not have geometric property (T)

Suppose that $G$ is a finitely generated group, $M$ is a compact Riemannian manifold and $G\curvearrowright M$ is a free and isometric action. We prove that the associated discretized warped cone does not have geometric property (T). In contrast, we show that the discretized warped cone associated to the natural action $SL_m(\mathbb Z)\curvearrowright \mathbb T^m$ has geometric property (T) for $m\geq 3$. We also prove that, for free probability-measure-preserving Lipschitz actions on compact Riemannian manifolds, geometric property (T) of the discretized warped cone implies Kazhdan's property (T) of the acting group.

Standard bases for shift-stable groups and Subgroup Membership in wreath products

We develop a notion of standard bases for subgroups of the restricted direct product $G^{(\mathbb{N}^n)}$ that are stable under translation by $\mathbb{N}^n$, where $G$ is an arbitrary finite group. We construct an algorithm that computes standard bases for such subgroups and use them to solve several algorithmic problems, including membership, saturation, and variable elimination. Our approach is inspired by Buchberger's algorithm and the theory of Gröbner bases for ideals in polynomial rings. Building on the standard bases and our solutions to the algorithmic problems above, we prove that Subgroup Membership is decidable in wreath products $G \wr \mathbb{Z}^n$ for finite $G$ and $n \in \mathbb{N}$.

Contractible Rips complexes of groups via metric gluings

We say that a finitely generated group equipped with a finite generating set is of type $\mathsf{R}$ if the Rips complex is contractible for sufficiently large scales. We show that the class of groups of type $\mathsf{R}$ is closed under taking graphs of groups with finite edge groups and, in particular, under taking free products. We prove that all two-dimensional right-angled Artin groups with the standard generating set are of type $\mathsf{R}$. Furthermore, we observe that products of finitely generated free abelian groups and finite groups are of type $\mathsf{R}$.

Relative Biexactness for Relative Hyperbolic Groups and Some Applications

In this paper, we confirm a conjecture of Ozawa and others asserting that every finitely generated, relatively hyperbolic, exact group is bi-exact (in the sense of Ozawa) relative to its natural peripheral structure. As a consequence, every such group gives rise to a prime group von Neumann algebra. As an application, we construct a continuum family of property (T), relatively hyperbolic groups $\{G_i\}_{i\in I}$ such that, for every fixed arbitrary free, ergodic, probability measure-preserving action $G_i \curvearrowright Z_i$, the collection of associated group measure space von Neumann algebras $\{L^\infty(Z_i)\rtimes G_i\}_{i\in I}$ are pairwise non-stably $\ast$-isomorphic.

Complexity and Polishability of characterized subgroups on the unit circle

Given an ideal $\mathcal I$ on $\omega$, a subgroup $H$ of the unit circle $\mathbb T$ is said to be $\mathcal I$-characterized if there exists a sequence of integers $(a_n:n\in\omega)$ such that $$ H= \left\{ x\in\mathbb T: \mathcal I\text{-}\lim_{n\to\infty}a_nx=0 \right\}. $$ We investigate the descriptive complexity and Polishability of these subgroups in terms of the structural and topological properties of the ideal $\mathcal I$. Our main structural result shows that $\mathcal{I}$ is an analytic $P$-ideal if and only if all $\mathcal I$-characterized subgroups are Polishable. In such case, we explicitly describe a compatible finer Polish group topology. Using results on Polishable subgroups, we obtain a trichotomy for their possible Borel complexities. If $\mathcal{I}$ is a generalized density ideal, we show the sharper dichotomy that every proper $\mathcal I$-characterized subgroup is either countable or $F_{\sigma\delta}$-complete. We also prove that this fails for general analytic $P$-ideals by constructing a subgroup characterized by a summable ideal which is neither $F_\sigma$ nor $F_{\sigma\delta}$-complete. Finally, we give explicit descriptions of the subgroups associated with the sequences of powers, the Fibonacci sequence, and the sequence of factorials. We conclude with several open questions.

Nilpotent groups with Dehn function $n^2 \log n$

We exhibit 2-step Carnot groups with Dehn function $n^2 \log n$, sharpening Wenger's superquadratic lower bound for these groups. Some of these groups admit lattices, yielding finitely generated nilpotent groups with Dehn function $n^2 \log n$. This gives the first exact computation of a Dehn function which does not grow like $n^\alpha$ for any $\alpha \geq 1$ among nilpotent groups and, more generally, among finitely presented solvable groups with subexponential Dehn function.

Average Numbers of Homomorphisms to Random Modules over Free Group Algebras

Let $F$ be a finitely generated free group, and let $L$ be a finitely presented $\mathbb{F}_q[F]$-module. We study the average number $\Lambda_L(n)$ of $\mathbb{F}_q[F]$-module homomorphisms from $L$ to an $\mathbb{F}_q[F]$-module of dimension $n$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$. We show that, for all sufficiently large $n$, the quantity $\Lambda_L(n)$ is given by a rational function of $q^n$ and satisfies \[ \Lambda_L(n) = q^{\chi(L)n} + \sum_{N\in A(L)} q^{\chi(L/N)n}\bigl(1+O(q^{-n})\bigr), \] where $\chi(L)$ denotes the Euler characteristic of $L$, and $A(L)$ is the set of nonzero $\mathbb{F}_q[F]$-submodules $N$ of $L$ that have no nonzero free quotients. Our proof is based on a theory of partial modules that may be of independent interest and have further applications.

Coset geometries acting on their elements: The $j$-diagonals twisting

Let $\beta$ be a coset incidence system and fix a type $j$. We use the orbits of the group of $\beta$ on pairs of distinct $j$-elements to define a Coxeter graph. The action on the $j$-elements induces an action on the corresponding Coxeter group, so the twisting construction for coset incidence systems can be applied. The resulting coset geometry, called the $j$-diagonals twisting, is always a regular hypertope if $\beta$ is a regular hypertope. Using this, we show that finite regular hypertope whose diagram is a tree with all but one of the labels equal to four always exist. We also define an extension operation that combines this Coxeter graph with another given Coxeter graph. For regular polytopes, these constructions recover the twisting extensions of McMullen and Schulte.

Uniform exponent bounds for integral group homology

We prove that, in each fixed degree, the exponent of the integral homology of a finite group is bounded solely in terms of the degree and the exponent of the group. The proof combines the solution of the restricted Burnside problem with a representability property of the bar construction and may be viewed as a torsion analogue of the method of acyclic models. We also use the Lyndon–Hochschild–Serre spectral sequence to obtain explicit bounds for finite solvable and nilpotent groups in terms of their derived length and nilpotency class.

Solubility from a disconnected common-divisor graph on $p$-regular conjugacy-class sizes

Let $G$ be a finite group and let $p$ be a prime. We prove that if the common-divisor graph on the nontrivial conjugacy-class sizes of $p$-regular elements of $G$ is disconnected, then $G$ is soluble, resolving the remaining case left by Camina, Maróti, Pacifici, Parker, Rekvényi, Saunders, Sotomayor, Tracey and van Beek. For a $p$-regular conjugacy class $B$ of maximal size, their structure results provide an abelian normal $p'$-subgroup $M$. We choose a noncentral $r$-element $x\in M$ such that $r\mid |B|$ and $\gcd(|x^G|,pr)=1$, and prove that $C_G(x)/M$ is a $\{p,r\}$-group. For $H=G/C_G(M)$, acting faithfully on $M$ by conjugation, it follows that the stabilizer $H_x$ of $x$ is a Hall $\{p,r\}$-subgroup and that every $p'$-element of $H$ has conjugacy-class size whose prime divisors lie in $\{p,r\}$. The theorem of Dolfi and Lucido, together with Burnside's $p^a q^b$-theorem, then excludes nonabelian composition factors of $H$.

Equations in Products of Free Groups and 3-Manifold Groups II: Olshanskii Epimorphisms

In 1989 Olshanskii introduced a three-parameter family of coordinate-surjective homomorphisms from the genus-two surface group to a direct product of two rank-two free groups. When the common quotient of the two coordinate images is finite of order $n$, restriction to the corresponding regular cover produces an epimorphism \[ \pi_1(S_{n+1})\longrightarrow F_{n+1}\times F_{n+1}. \] We call these maps Olshanskii epimorphisms. They form an explicit high-genus test family for the standardness problem for splitting epimorphisms. We prove that every Olshanskii epimorphism is standard. The genus-two homomorphism determines a Heegaard splitting of a Seifert fibered $3$-manifold over $S^2$ with at most three exceptional fibers. In the finite-quotient cases, classical Seifert theory shows that its universal cover is $S^3$; Waldhausen's theorem then implies that the lifted genus-$(n+1)$ Heegaard splitting is standard. The proof uses neither Perelman's theorem nor the general Poincaré theorem. We also give a constructive treatment of the quaternion case $Q(2,2,2)\cong Q_8$, whose covering surface has genus nine. A maximal tree in the quaternion Schreier graph yields the covering handlebody and explicit Schreier bases. Using geometric longitude–meridian pairs and explicit surface automorphisms supported on the nine one-holed tori, we transform the lifted meridian words into a free basis. A separate fixed-rank Andrews–Curtis certificate reduces the associated balanced presentation. This paper supplies the detailed proof of the result announced in the previous Kharlampovich, Vdovina paper.

Borel dimension growth and hyperfiniteness

We show that every increasing union of Borel graphs of pointwise volume growth at most $\exp(O(r^\gamma))$ is hyperfinite, where $\gamma \approx 0.1523$ is the unique real root of $(1 - \gamma)^3 - 4\gamma = 0$. This implies a positive answer to the special case of Weiss's question on the hyperfiniteness of Borel actions of countable amenable groups, for countable amenable groups locally of volume growth $\exp(O(r^\gamma))$ for $\gamma$ as above. We also show that every bounded degree Borel graph of subexponential volume growth has Borel Følner tilings, improving a result of Downarowicz and Zhang for graphs generated by free Borel actions of groups of subexponential volume growth. Our main tools are the development of a Borel analogue of the two-parameter dimension growth function of a metric space as introduced by Dranishnikov and Sapir, and ball carving algorithms from theoretical computer science. We end with a pair of conjectures relating Borel amenability, Borel subexponential dimension growth, and hyperfiniteness, which would imply a positive answer to Weiss's question.

On Conjugacy Classes of Derangements in Symmetric and Alternating Groups

In this article, we prove two conjectures of Burness and Fusari [Timothy Burness and Marco Fusari, On derangements in simple permutation groups, Forum Math. Sigma 13 (2025)] concerning the powers and products of conjugacy classes of derangements in the symmetric and alternating groups: (1) We show that there exist two conjugacy classes $C$ and $D$ of derangements in $S_n$ such that $S_n=C^2\cup CD$, and (2) We show that there exists a conjugacy class $C$ of derangements in $A_n$ such that $C^2=A_n$, whenever $n\equiv 3\;(\text{mod}\;4)$. In fact, our result concerning the second conjecture holds in a considerably more general setting, which also answers affirmatively a question posed by Bertram [Edward Bertram, Even permutations as a product of two conjugate cycles, J. Comb. Theory, Ser. A 12 (1972), 368-380] in a particular case. Moreover, we show that any conjugacy class $C$ of derangements in $S_n$ (resp. $A_n$) contains a pair of elements that generate $S_n$ or $A_n$ (resp. $A_n$), unless $C$ is the conjugacy class of fixed-point-free involutions.

Write $D_n=\langle d_{i,j}\mid 1\leq j<i\leq n\rangle$ and $A_n^+=\langle d_{i,j},e_{i,j}\mid 1\leq j<i\leq n\rangle$. We prove that $D_n$ admits a presentation on the generators $d_{r+1,r}$, $1\leq r\leq n-1$, with three families of relations given by commutators of weights two, three, and four, respectively.
