Optimal inequalities for completely bounded polynomials and the limitations of quantum query algorithms

We consider the problem of establishing limitations on the power of quantum query algorithms via the completely bounded polynomial method. In particular, we prove several optimal functional inequalities involving different notions of completely bounded polynomials. These inequalities lead to limiting theorems for the power of quantum query algorithms that improve on prior works. 1. An optimal root-influence bound for block-multilinear polynomials. Prior work showed that block-multilinear polynomials $p$ of degree $t$ satisfy a root-influence bound, $\|p\|_{\text{cb}}\geq \sum_i \sqrt{\mathrm{Inf}_i[p]}/t^2$, which is stronger than the bound appearing in the Aaronson-Ambainis conjecture. We find the optimal constant in that inequality: $\|p\|_{\text{cb}}\geq \sum_i \sqrt{\mathrm{Inf}_i[p]}/t$. Since the amplitudes of quantum algorithms that query disjoint blocks of inputs-such as $t$-fold forrelation- are block-multilinear polynomials with $\|p\|_{\text{cb}}\leq 1,$ our inequality shows that they satisfy $t\geq \sum_i\sqrt{\mathrm{Inf}_i[p]}$. We prove that this inequality yields both a more efficient classical simulation than prior results based on the Aaronson-Ambainis argument, and a qualitative improvement: all classical queries are nonadaptive. 2. Optimal Fourier growth of the highest level of quantum query algorithms. We show that for every polynomial $p$ defined on $\{-1,1\}^n$ of degree $2t$, the Fourier Growth at the level $2t,$ namely $\|\widehat p_{2t}\|_{\ell_1}$, satisfies $\|\widehat p_{2t}\|_{\ell_1}\leq (en/(2t-1))^{\frac{2t-1}{2}}\|p\|_{\text{cb}}$. This is optimal up to the factor $e$, as witnessed by $2t$-fold forrelation. As quantum query algorithms that make $t$ queries (to the whole input) satisfy $\|p\|_{\text{cb}}\leq 1$, this yields a Fourier growth bound for these algorithms, partially resolving a question by Girish (STOC, 2026).

From plans to maps: Nonlocal regularization of optimal transport

We introduce a nonlocal regularization of optimal transport that bridges Kantorovich and Monge formulations. The regularization penalizes oscillations through an interaction kernel singular near the diagonal. We show that, for sufficiently strong singularities, every finite-energy transport plan is induced by a map, yielding equivalence between the regularized Kantorovich and Monge problems. For fractional kernels, the regularizer reduces to a fractional Sobolev seminorm that can allow jump discontinuities, leading to existence results for broad classes of source and target measures. We derive first-order optimality conditions and analyze the vanishing-regularization limit. The regularized functionals $\Gamma$-converge to the classical Kantorovich problem, while the first-order $\Gamma$-limit selects, whenever they exist, finite-energy Monge minimizers with minimal nonlocal energy. When no such minimizer exists, we identify a different asymptotic regime and establish a sharp scaling law in a prototypical mass-splitting example. Finally, after lifting the problem to the product of transport plans, we derive a dual formulation using the cone of copositive functions and propose a fixed-point numerical scheme illustrating the regularization.

Dimension-free $H^\infty$-calculus of angle $<\pi/2$ for UMD-valued Ornstein–Uhlenbeck operators

Let $1<p<\infty$, let $X$ be a UMD Banach space, let $1<p<\infty$, and let $L_d$ be the generator of the Ornstein–Uhlenbeck semigroup $(P_d(t))_{t\geq 0}$ on $L^p(\mathbb R^d,\gamma_d;X)$. We prove that the operators $-L_d$ are $R$-sectorial with a common angle strictly smaller than $\pi/2$ and with bounds independent of $d$. Combining this with the Hieber–Prüss transference theorem and the Kalton–Weis angle comparison, we deduce that the operators $-L_d$ admit bounded $H^\infty$-calculi of a common angle strictly smaller than $\pi/2$, again with dimension-free bounds. The corresponding Walsh $R$-analyticity estimates are proved first and transferred to the Ornstein–Uhlenbeck setting by a central limit argument.

The Skew Commutators of Toeplitz and Hankel operators in vector-valued Hardy Space

In this article, we characterize when a Toeplitz operator and a Hankel operator on the vector-valued Hardy space are skew commutators of each other, and determine necessary and sufficient conditions under which their product is self-adjoint. These characterizations extend the results in \cite{LZD}. In addition, we completely classify the skew commutators of the unilateral shift $S$, its adjoint $S^*$ and $S\oplus S^*.$ We also characterize the class of bounded linear operators that have $S$, $S^*$ and $S\oplus S^*$ as skew-commutators.

Boundary Geometry and Surjective Linear Isometries of Weighted Hardy Spaces

Let $D\subset\mathbb C^n$, $n\geq 2$, be a bounded pseudoconvex domain with smooth boundary, and let $H^p_\omega(D)$ be the Hardy space defined using a weighted boundary measure $\omega\,d\sigma$, where $\omega$ is bounded above and bounded away from zero. For every $0<p<\infty$, $p\neq2$, we prove that each surjective linear isometry $T$ of $H^p_\omega(D)$ has the rigid form \( Tf=T(1)(f\circ\varphi), \) where $\varphi\in\operatorname{Aut}(D)$. This extends the classical Forelli-type classification beyond highly symmetric or polynomially convex domains to arbitrary smoothly bounded pseudoconvex domains. The principal difficulty is not the construction of a holomorphic symbol, but proving that this symbol takes values in $D$ and is in fact biholomorphic. We overcome this difficulty by combining equimeasurability methods of Rudin and Schneider with boundary uniqueness, holomorphic approximation, plurisubharmonic exhaustion functions, and removable-singularity arguments across analytic sets. We also solve the complementary geometric problem of determining when an automorphism of $D$ gives rise to an isometry. The answer depends decisively on the boundary measure. We construct two natural measures for which every automorphism induces an isometry: one obtained from an invariant defining function when $\operatorname{Aut}(D)$ is compact, and the other given by Fefferman's invariant surface measure. In sharp contrast, we exhibit domains with noncompact automorphism group—including domains biholomorphic to the unit ball—for which the analogous conclusion fails for ordinary Euclidean surface measure. Thus the isometric structure of Hardy spaces detects not only the biholomorphic geometry of the domain, but also the finer interaction between that geometry and the chosen boundary measure.

Fixed Point Theorems for Paired Contractive Mappings in $b$-Metric Spaces

In this paper, we develop a fixed point framework for paired contractive mappings in complete $b$-metric spaces. We introduce the class of paired-Chatterjea contractions and establish a corresponding fixed point theorem. We further show that every Chatterjea-type contraction is a paired-Chatterjea contraction, whereas the converse implication does not hold, demonstrating that the paired formulation properly extends the Chatterjea-type class. Additionally, we establish a fixed point theorem for Paired contractions under the condition $\alpha\in[0,1)$, thereby extending the admissible range of the contraction constant from $[0,\frac1s)$ in Bouker et al.~(2026) to [0,1). Furthermore, we examine the Paired-Kannan fixed point result of Bouker et al.~(2026) and provide an example showing that the stated coefficient condition does not guarantee the claimed fixed point conclusion in $b$-metric spaces. Motivated by this observation, we establish a corrected Paired-Kannan fixed point theorem under a complete and appropriately formulated set of hypotheses. Under suitable contractive conditions, we prove that the contractions under consideration have fixed points if and only if they have no periodic point of prime period 2. Moreover, we show that each of these contractions has at most two fixed points. Several examples are presented to illustrate our results and distinguish the proposed paired contractive mappings from existing ones.

Optimal square size for separating the operator and completely bounded norms of Schur multipliers on $S^4$

We determine the smallest square size at which the operator norm and the completely bounded norm of a Schur multiplier on $S^4$ can differ. More precisely, for $A=\begin{bmatrix}1&2&0\\1&-2&0\\2&2\mathrm{i}&0\end{bmatrix}$ we prove \[ \|M_A\|_{S^4_3\to S^4_3}^2\leq\frac{1119}{250} <\left(\frac{18983532}{947485}\right)^{1/2} \leq \|\mathrm{Id}_{S^4_2}\otimes M_A\|_{S^4_6\to S^4_6}^2. \] We also prove that no $2\times2$ Schur multiplier can have unequal operator and completely bounded norms on $S^4$, so square size three is optimal. In addition, we determine the exact ordinary norm of the previous multiplier analytically and give an independent computer-assisted certification of a rational upper bound.

The phase diagram of injective-to-projective tensor distortion

For finite-dimensional Banach spaces $E$ and $F$, set \[ \rho(E,F):=\sup_{0\neq z\in E\otimes F}\frac{\pi(z)}{\varepsilon(z)}. \] The square growth of $\rho(\ell_p^d,\ell_q^d)$ was determined by Bonet, Defant, Peris and Ramanujan. We study the rectangular problem with the two dimensions varying independently. If $r=\min\{n,m\}$ and $\eta(t)=\min\{1/t,1/t'\}$, then, whenever $p$ and $q$ lie on the same side of $2$, \[ \rho(\ell_p^n,\ell_q^m)\asymp_{p,q} r^{1/2}\min\{n^{\eta(p)},m^{\eta(q)}\}. \] Thus the classical square exponent splits into two dimensional scales. In the mixed range $1\le p\le2\le q\le\infty$, writing $a=1/p$ and $b=1/q$, we obtain the lower estimate \[ \rho_{p,q}(n,m)\gtrsim_{p,q} \max\!\left\{r^{\min\{a+b,2-a-b\}}, m^{b-1/2}r^{1/2}\min\{n^{1-a},m^{1/2}\}\right\}, \] and the upper estimate \[ \rho_{p,q}(n,m)\lesssim_{p,q} \min\!\left\{n^{1-a}r^{1-b},m^b r^a,r\right\}. \] Moreover, if $(n-m)(a+b-1)\le0$, then \[ \rho_{p,q}(n,m)\asymp_{p,q} r^{\min\{a+b,\,2-a-b\}}. \] In the interior mixed range $1<p<2<q<p'$, if \[ \alpha_{p,q}:= \frac{(a+b-1)(\frac12-b)}{a-\frac12}, \] then \[ \rho_{p,q}(n,m)\lesssim_{p,q}m^{1-\alpha_{p,q}}, \qquad \sup_{n\ge1}\rho_{p,q}(n,m)\asymp_{p,q}m^{1-\alpha_{p,q}}. \] The corresponding statements in the reversed mixed range follow by duality and symmetry.

The Geometry of Real Anisotropic Bohnenblust–Hille Constants

We determine the growth scale of the optimal constants in the real anisotropic Bohnenblust–Hille inequality. For an exponent vector $\mathbf q^{(m)}$, write $C_{\mathbf q^{(m)}}^{(m)}$ for its optimal constant and $d_m$ for its diameter. These constants are superpolynomial precisely when $m d_m/\log m\to\infty$; throughout this regime, their logarithm has the sharp scale $m d_m$. If also $d_m\to0$, then $\log C_{\mathbf q^{(m)}}^{(m)}/(m d_m)$ lies asymptotically in the interval $\left[\frac{\log 2}{4},\frac{2-\log 2-\gamma}{4}\right]$, where $\gamma$ is the Euler–Mascheroni constant; this interval has width less than $10^{-2}$. We also solve the extremal problems at fixed diameter and fixed total deficit. The normalized reciprocal-deficit profiles order the canonically arranged optimal constants by majorization, yield exact formulas on a full-dimensional region, and recover the lower coefficient $(\log 2)/4$ throughout a broad class of anisotropic regimes.

In particular, neither the lacunary nor the full quadratic operator is of weak type $(1,1)$. In the positive direction, we establish an $L\log_1 L$ modular estimate for $\mathcal{C}_2$ and a $L (\log_2L)^2 \log_4L$ estimate for $\mathcal{C}_{2,\mathsf{lac}}.$

The proof relies heavily on the noncommutative semigroup BMO theory [JungeMei].

A $p$-summability approach to the weak maximizing property

Motivated by the weak maximizing property ($\mathrm{WMP}$), we investigate $p$-summability conditions on maximizing sequences of bounded linear operators. Since the naive $p$-summability formulation is independent of $p$ and collapses to norm attainment for all operators, we introduce the weakly $p$-singular maximizing property ($\mathrm{SMP}_p$), based on maximizing sequences with no weakly $p$-summable subsequence. We completely characterize when the pairs $(\ell_p,\ell_q)$ and $(\ell_p,c_0)$ have the $\mathrm{SMP}_r$, revealing sharp contrasts with the $\mathrm{WMP}$. We also characterize the Schur property of order $p$ via the $\mathrm{WMP}$ and the $\mathrm{SMP}_r$. Under relative weak $p$-precompactness and suitable Dunford-Pettis-type assumptions, we characterize universal norm attainment for operators from $X$ to $Y$ in terms of either the $\mathrm{SMP}_q$ for adjoint operators or the weak$^{*}$-to-weak$^{*}$ maximizing property, and derive corresponding duality consequences for the $\mathrm{SMP}_p$. Finally, we introduce $p$-convergent perturbation properties for operators and their adjoints, characterize them for classical sequence spaces, and show that the $p$-convergent perturbation property is strictly weaker than the $\mathrm{SMP}_p$.

Measure theory without infinities

The aim of this paper is to develop a framework for measure theory that avoids infinities and allows for the uniform treatment of positive and vector measures. Our approach is based on a modification of the notion of measure, which supplements the usual $\sigma$-additivity requirement with a suitable maximality condition. To each Hausdorff topological vector space $\mathfrak A$ and $\sigma$-ring $\mathcal{Q}$, we associate a vector space $\mathscr M(\mathcal{Q},\mathfrak A)$ of `infinite' $\mathfrak A$-valued measures corresponding to $\mathcal{Q}$. In particular, the positive elements of $\mathscr M(\mathcal{Q},\mathbb R)$ are naturally identified with the $\sigma$-finite positive measures defined on $\mathcal{Q}$, thus placing positive and signed measures within the same setting. Finally, extension results for group-valued contents due to Sion and Weber are reformulated and refined within this new framework.

Fourier Analysis and Idempotents in Quandle Algebras

In 2023, the first author, Nunez, Singh, and Swain [10] formulated an analogue of Kaplansky's idempotent conjecture for integral quandle rings. In this paper, we develop a new Fourier-analytic approach to quandle rings and use it to establish the conjecture for two major classes of quandles: Takasaki quandles, including dihedral quandles, and medial commutative quandles. A central contribution of the paper is the introduction of Fourier analysis on Alexander quandles, which provides a new framework for studying quandle rings and, in particular, their idempotents. Using this Fourier-analytic framework, we also prove that a previously known sufficient condition for the existence of counterexamples to the conjecture is in fact necessary, thereby resolving a problem of Jablonowski [12].

Typical Martingale Diverges on a Co-$\sigma$-porous Set

We consider the space of $L^p$-bounded martingales on the Cantor space for $p\in[1,\infty]$. Equipping the Cantor space with two standard metrics, we show that under both, a typical martingale diverges at a typical point. By a 'typical martingale', we mean an element of a co-$\sigma$-porous set when $p\in[1,\infty)$ and of a co-porous set when $p=\infty$. Specifically, we show that while a typical martingale diverges on a co-$\sigma$-porous set with respect to the first metric, no martingale diverges on a co-$\sigma$-porous set with respect to the second metric. Finally, we investigate the key factors determining whether the divergence set can be co-$\sigma$-porous.

Extension Problems for the Vladimirov–Taibleson Operator and the Hierarchical Laplacian

We establish a non-Archimedean Caffarelli-Silvestre extension theory for the Vladimirov-Taibleson operator $D^s$ for $s>0$ and, more generally, for hierarchical Laplacians $L_C$. For every $f\in\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{Q}_p^n)$, we equip the Bruhat-tits tree $\mathcal{T}_{p^n}$ with the weight $w_{v_{k-1}v_k}=p^{k(s-n)}$ under the horocyclic coordinates. We prove that the resulting Dirichlet problem admits a unique bounded weighted-harmonic solution that is continuous on the end compactification. Its boundary traces converge to $f$ uniformly and in $L^2$, while the associated deformed normal derivative converges pointwise and in $L^2$ to $D^s f$. We derive explicit Fourier and Poisson representations of the extension and establish an energy identity between its weighted tree energy and the quadratic form of $D^s$. Motivated by $p$-adic AdS/CFT, we also give an equivalent massive formulation on the unweighted tree, based on a renormalized trace and a scale-corrected normal derivative. Finally, under natural local-finiteness and scaling assumptions, we extend the construction to hierarchical Laplacians $L_C$ on ultrametric spaces. We characterize the canonical edge conductances by requiring the cancellation Green operator on the ultrametric tree $\mathcal{T}_X$ to coincide with $L_C^{-1}$ on $\mathcal{S}_0(X)$. In the corresponding canonical flux class, the extension is unique, its Dirichlet-to-Neumann map is $L_C$, and it satisfies the associated energy identity. The Vladimirov-Taibleson construction is recovered as the homogeneous special case.

On the abstract approach to spectral constants: a proof of the Clouâtre–Ostermann–Ransford conjecture

Clouâtre, Ostermann, and Ransford formulated an abstract version of Crouzeix's conjecture involving a bounded unital homomorphism from a uniform algebra into matrices and a unital antilinear map. They conjectured that contractivity of the associated symmetrised map forces the homomorphism to have norm at most two. We prove this conjecture, in fact without requiring the antilinear map to be contractive and for homomorphisms into the bounded operators on a Hilbert space. The proof combines positivity of real parts, an operator-valued Herglotz theorem, and the perturbation lemma of Lorist and Schwenninger used in the recent proof of Crouzeix's conjecture.

Local well-posedness of the higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the half-line: the case of two boundary conditions

We prove the local Hadamard well-posedness of the higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation with negative dispersion coefficient on the half-line under nonzero Dirichlet and Neumann boundary data. The paper uncovers a striking feature of this model: unlike the positive-dispersion case studied in (Alk{\i}n, Mantzavinos, Ozsari, 2024), well-posedness requires two boundary conditions rather than one. This reflects a structural limitation in the underlying global relation, which allows elimination of at most one unknown boundary trace. Using the unified transform of Fokas, we derive an explicit solution formula for the associated forced linear problem and establish sharp Sobolev and Strichartz estimates on the half-line. These linear estimates, together with corresponding Cauchy problem bounds, yield local well-posedness in both high- and low-regularity Sobolev spaces, as well as local Lipschitz continuity of the solution map.

Divergence of decreasing rearranged Fourier series on every infinite compact abelian group

On every infinite compact Hausdorff abelian group there is a complex-valued continuous function whose Fourier sums, taken over coefficients above a decreasing magnitude threshold, are unbounded almost everywhere. In fact, such functions form a dense \(G_\delta\) in the space of continuous functions with its uniform norm. Moreover, a divergent example may be chosen with Fourier support contained in any prescribed infinite subgroup of the dual, while avoiding any prescribed finite set of frequencies. No metrizability or zero-dimensionality is assumed. The proof combines Körner's finite circle and Walsh lemmas with a finite construction on products of odd cyclic groups. A trichotomy for the dual group, exact quotient transfer, and cyclic sampling give finite examples on every group under consideration.

Almost-invariant half-spaces of operators on $\omega$

We study the Almost-Invariant Subspace Problem for operators defined on non-normable Fréchet spaces and especially on $\omega$. This problem is stated as follows: "Given a bounded operator $T$ on an infinite-dimensional complex Fréchet space $X$, can we always find a closed almost-invariant half-space?". In this paper we solve the problem for the space $\omega$ by showing that an operator $T$ on $\omega$ possesses a closed almost-invariant half-space if and only if $T$ is conjugate to $F + R + \lambda \operatorname{Id}$ or to $B + R + \lambda \operatorname{Id}$ where $F$ is the Forward shift and $B$ is the Backward shift and where $R$ is a finite rank operator and $\lambda \in \mathbb{C}$. We also investigate the case of operators defined on $X \oplus \omega$ where $X$ is an infinite-dimensional Fréchet space with a continuous norm and we show that in this case, every operator defined on $X \oplus \omega$ possesses a closed almost-invariant half-space.

Hyperpositive functions, sector bounded functions and a trace formula

We study an indexed family of functions closely related to functions ana- lytic and with a real positive part in the right open half plane (the so-called positive functions) and to the functions analytic in the right open half-plane and bounded in modulus by one there (the so-called bounded functions). These two families are related by the Cayley transform. In the present paper we introduce an affine linear relation- ship between a subclass of positive functions and the family of bounded functions, and study the corresponding connections with passivity of linear systems, interpolation and operator models. This is therefore a multidisciplinary paper, with potential readers from engineering, linear system theory and operator theory, and some repetitions of known results are given to allow various audiences to read the work. Reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of analytic functions are a key tool in the arguments. A special role is played by the de Branges-Rovnyak spaces associated to bounded functions, and we prove a related trace formula connecting an underlying pair of operators.

Weighted Cesàro type operators on the weighted Bergman spaces in the unit ball

In this paper, we study weighted Cesàro type operators \[ \mathcal C_{\mu,\beta}^{\xi}:A_{\alpha}^{p}(\mathbb B_n) \longrightarrow A_{\alpha}^{q}(\mathbb B_n) \] induced by measures on $[0,1)$, and obtain boundedness characterizations throughout the range $0<p,q\le\infty$. We first extend the corresponding results on the unit disk to the unit ball in the range $1\le p\le q<\infty$. By means of atomic decomposition, we further treat the case $0<p<1$ and $p\le q<\infty$, thereby obtaining a complete characterization for $0<p\le q<\infty$. The latter result is new even in one dimension. For the range $0<q<p\le\infty$, we characterize the boundedness in terms of an integral condition involving the tail function of the inducing measure. This result is also new even on the unit disk. Finally, we characterize the boundedness of the corresponding operators when the target space is $H^\infty(\mathbb B_n)$.

Stability of maximal relative projection constants

For positive integers $n\ge r$, let $\lambda(r,n)$ denote the maximal relative projection constant of $r$-dimensional subspaces of $\ell_\infty^n$ and $\lambda(r)$ denote the maximal absolute projection constant, respectively. It is known that for any fixed $r$, $\lambda(r,n)$ is a non-decreasing sequence with limit $\lambda(r)$ as $n\to \infty$. A natural question is whether $\lambda(r,n)$ stabilizes at $\lambda(r)$ for some $n>r$. We prove that for any fixed $r$, \[\lambda(r,n)=\lambda(r) \qquad \text{for every}\qquad n\ge 2^{r}\binom{r+1}{2}.\] This answers a question of Basso. The technique used is of independent interest.

Variants of order semicontinuity in Banach lattices

In this article we consider various properties of a normed lattice, which are similar to semicontinuity (also known as the Fatou property), establish relations between these properties, and discuss stability of these properties under renorming. In particular, we show that a normed lattice $F$ is order continuous iff every renorming of $F$ is semicontinuous. We also prove that the weakly Fatou (we propose the term “demicontinuous”) normed lattices are precisely the ones isomorphic to regular sublattices of monotonically complete Banach lattices. In order to do so we introduce the concept of the Lorentz completion of a demicontinuous normed lattice, which is somewhat analogous to the universal completion from the vector lattice theory. Furthermore, we unify and simplify the proofs of the characterizations of monotone completeness from \cite{aw} and \cite{taylor} and provide their quantitative versions. The semicontinuity-related properties in AM-spaces have some additional features. While the classical Kakutani theorem states that AM-spaces are precisely the closed sublattices of $\Co\left(K\right)$-spaces, we show, using two different methods, that the semicontinuous AM-spaces are precisely the closed regular sublattices of $\Co\left(K\right)$-spaces. Finally, we prove that for a normed space $E$, the AM-space of positively homogeneous weak* continuous functions on $\Ba_{E^{*}}$ is semicontinuous iff it is a regular sublattice of $\Co\left(\Ba_{E^{*}},\mathrm{w}^{*}\right)$ iff $\dim E<\8$.

The classes of bivariate Schur and Herglotz matrix-valued rational functions: realizations, symmetrizations, and related determinantal representations

We present a finite-dimensional realization theory for bivariate rational functions that are contractive or have nonnegative real part on the bidisc or on the bihalfplane. We show that the realization formula depends only on the underlying domain, while the distinction between the four resulting function classes is captured entirely by explicit matrix inequalities imposed on the realization matrices. These results provide finite-dimensional realizations for rational Schur–Agler and Herglotz–Agler functions, extending the previous infinite-dimensional results. We further characterize symmetric realizations by means of a Hermitian unitary symmetry of the realization data, yielding realization theorems on the symmetrized bihalfplane. Finally, we obtain determinantal representations for symmetric stable polynomials and, consequently, for stable polynomials on the symmetrized bihalfplane. For rational functions over the real field the respective representations can use matrices with real entries.

Unitarily invariant norms

This survey paper provides a comprehensive study of unitarily invariant norms on the algebra of $n \times n$ matrices. This investigation leads naturally to the theory of symmetric gauge functions, a class of norms on $\mathbb{R}^n$ characterized by invariance and monotonicity properties. We develop the necessary framework by examining absolute and monotone norms and establishing their equivalence, thereby offering additional insight into the classical Hardy-Littlewood-Pólya theorem on majorization. The theory of majorization is further explored through its connections with doubly stochastic matrices, convexity, and fundamental results such as the Birkhoff and Radó theorems, as well as König's theorem on term rank and line rank. We also study weak majorization and derive a characterization that plays a crucial role in proving the monotonicity of symmetric gauge functions. On the spectral side, we review key results in matrix analysis, including the Courant-Fischer min-max theorem, the Cauchy interlacing theorem, and Ky Fan's majorization theorem, along with a weak subadditivity result for singular values of arbitrary matrices. These ingredients culminate in a detailed proof of von Neumann's characterization of unitarily invariant norms, which provides a complete and elegant description of this class of norms. Some illustrative examples, as well as the Ky Fan domination principle as an application, are also presented.

We study the category of dual operator spaces equipped with an action of a locally compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$. The Fubini crossed product functor $-\rtimes^\mathcal{F} \mathbb{G}$ and the weak$^*$-crossed product functor $-\bar{\rtimes}\mathbb{G}$ are shown to be equal if and only if $\mathbb{G}$ has the approximation property of Haagerup and Kraus. Using the natural isomorphism $-\rtimes^\mathcal{F}\mathbb{G}\cong {}_{L^1(\mathbb{G})}\mathcal{CB}(B(L^2(\mathbb{G}))_*, -)$, this leads to a characterization of the approximation property of $\mathbb{G}$ via an $L^1(\mathbb{G})$-module approximation property for $B(L^2(\mathbb{G}))_*$. Finally, exactness of the Fubini crossed product functor is investigated and related to amenability properties of $\mathbb{G}$.
