Failure of Ordinary TQFTs to Distinguish Homotopy Type

Work by David Reutter and Christopher Schommer-Pries has shown that ordinary smooth TQFTs can distinguish (stable) diffeomorphism classes of closed, connected, even-dimensional manifolds subject to certain finiteness conditions. In particular, simply connected, closed, smooth 6-manifolds with finite $\pi_2$ are diffeomorphic if and only if they cannot be distinguished by ordinary TQFTs. The question of whether or not this result holds for all simply connected closed 6-manifolds was open. We consider TQFTs out of the topological and smooth bordism categories, as well as out of a new bordism category constructed in this paper called the formally smooth (FS) bordism category. We present a pair of simply connected closed 6-manifolds with infinite $\pi_2$ that are not homotopy equivalent, yet are indistinguishable by ordinary TQFTs in all three categories. We extend this counter-example to show that ordinary TQFTs cannot distinguish the homotopy type of simply connected closed manifolds in all dimensions greater than or equal to 6 and non-simply connected closed 5-manifolds. We show that our class of counter-example pairs is spinnable and present a non-spinnable class of counter-examples by introducing a $\mathbb{C}P^2$ connected summand. Lastly, we use more highly connected analogues of our counter-examples to show that, for all $n\geq2$ and $m\geq 2n$, there is a pair of $(2n-1)$-connected closed $(4n+m)$-manifolds that are not homotopy equivalent, yet cannot be distinguished by ordinary TQFTs.

The sublevel Flood bifiltration: towards scalable 2-parameter persistent homology

Multiparameter persistent homology is a rapidly developing branch of topological data analysis that improves the robustness of single-parameter persistent homology to outliers, while still capturing the metric characteristics of the data. However, a notable limitation is its lack of scalability. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach for efficiently computing 2-parameter persistent homology on large point sets. Our work extends the Flood filtration, originally developed for single-parameter persistence. Our construction, called the sublevel Flood bifiltration, offers a scalable approximation of the sublevel offset bifiltration. We show that it benefits from theoretical stability properties and describe how to compute it efficiently. We demonstrate the performance of our approach in classification tasks on low-dimensional synthetic datasets, where density awareness is critical, as well as on real-world time series datasets.

Cups and Gates II: Operads, twists, and addressable intra-code gates

In Part I, we introduced a general framework for constructing logical gates in quantum CSS codes from cohomology invariants, focusing on cup products and their generalizations from topological to qLDPC codes. In particular, we produced a family of $C^{k-1}Z$ logical gates that we called copy-cup on $k$ copies of the same quantum code implemented by finite-depth circuits. Here, we vastly extend this framework by introducing twists incorporating code automorphisms, higher twisted cohomology operations, and folding operations in relative cohomology. The framework includes operations lifting coefficients from $\mathbb{Z}/2$ to $\mathbb{Z}/2^k$, enabling all diagonal logical gates such as single-qubit rotations $\operatorname{R}(2\pi/2^k)$. Composing these operations with maps that select cohomology classes yields addressable logical gates. Examples include addressable $T$ gates on three- and four-tori and gates in qLDPC codes beyond topological ones. We introduce cohomology operations, such as the higher twisted Pontryagin powers, that to our knowledge have not previously appeared in the mathematics literature. These operations arise from $E_\infty$-structures on cochains, with explicit constructions using cyclic resolutions and the surjection operad. We expect these results to be of independent interest in homotopy theory. Our formalism applies much more broadly to chain complexes carrying suitable operadic structures, and we expect this operadic perspective to uncover further connections between homotopy theory and fault-tolerant quantum gates.

Iterated Topological Hochschild Homology of $\mathbb{F}_p$ at odd primes

We compute homotopy groups of $n$-fold iterated topological Hochschild homology of $\mathbb{F}_p$ for $n\geq1$ and odd primes. Identifying this as the Loday construction $T^n\otimes\mathbb{F}_p$, we construct a bar spectral sequence computing $\pi_*(T^n\otimes\mathbb{F}_p)$ and prove that this spectral sequence collapses at the $E^2$-page. Finally, we resolve the multiplicative extensions and determine the ring structure.

The Supertrace Defect of a Graded Endomorphism

Motivated by Igusa's relation between relative cyclic homology and the logarithm of the graded Cartan determinant, we isolate the homological step behind the passage from logarithmic determinants to traces of powers. For a bounded chain complex $(C_*,d)$ and a degree-zero graded endomorphism $f$, not assumed to commute with $d$, we construct the universal quotient on which $f$ becomes a chain map. The kernel of this reflection iterates to a canonical functorial minimal filtration, whose Rees module gives a flat degeneration to an uncurved associated graded. For finite-dimensional chain groups all power supertraces of $f$ are represented by Lefschetz traces on this associated graded, so the resulting logarithmic-determinant and zeta series admit a canonical homological representation.

Realization of permutation modules as homology of CW-complexes

In this paper, we investigate the realizability problem, which asks whether prescribed group actions on graded modules can be realized by the groups of self-homotopy equivalences of CW-complexes acting on their homology. We provide a partial answer in the case of arbitrary groups and permutation modules concentrated in certain degrees. As a consequence, we realize every group as the group of self-homotopy equivalences of an $R$-local CW-complex with arbitrary prescribed connectivity, where $R$ may be chosen with $\rho(R)$ sufficiently large. In particular, this provides a complete answer to Kahn's realizability problem.

The Real Albanese Map and Smooth Topology of the Cartwright–Steger Quotient

Let $X$ be the Cartwright–Steger surface with its real involution $c$ and Albanese map $\alpha:X\to E$, and put $Y=X/\langle c\rangle$. Every smooth real Albanese fiber has two ovals and is nondividing. The branch surface $B\cong\#_3\mathbb{RP}^2$ satisfies $j_*\pi_1(B)=4\mathbb Z\subset\pi_1(Y)\cong\mathbb Z$ and is nullhomologous modulo two. Every smoothly embedded $+1$-sphere representing the positive generator of $H_2(Y;\mathbb Z)$ meets $B$ in at least six points. Its lift has square two, pairs trivially with $K_X$, and has no connected embedded representative of genus zero or one. Circle surgery on an Albanese generator is homeomorphic to $\mathbb{CP}^2$ for either normal framing. Blowing down a positive sphere, if one exists, gives a $\mathbb Z[\mathbb Z]$-homology $S^1\times S^3$ homotopy equivalent to $S^1\times S^3$.

Geometric Realizations of Capability Spaces of Large Models and Zigzag Persistent Homology

We propose a topological model for capability changes during large-model training. The model represents knowledge states and preregistered capability probes as subcomplexes of a finite regular CW complex. We prove that attaching a single $n$-cell can only create a class in $\mathrm H_n$ or kill a class in $\mathrm H_{n-1}$. With the reliability threshold and the training checkpoint as two parameter axes, capability gains and losses make the spaces along the training axis nonnested. Union or intersection bridges produce zigzag persistence modules, and we distinguish checkpoint, transition, and bridge-sensitive classes. A finite four-stage example is computed by boundary matrices. The framework records algebraic changes under a chosen encoding, and a homological change is called a candidate capability emergence only after robustness tests, null-model comparisons, and independent behavioral validation.

The topology of Kähler manifolds and 1-forms without zeros

We study how the topology and geometry of a compact Kähler manifold relate to the zeros of its one-forms. We determine all implications among several closely related conditions. In particular, we construct a smooth projective variety for which the Aomoto complex is exact for every nonzero holomorphic one-form and every semisimple local system, although every closed real one-form, and hence every holomorphic one-form, has a zero.

Torsion of every finite order in the homology of graph braid groups

We determine the torsion subgroup of $H_{m-1}(\mathbb{B}_mK_{m+1,m+r-1};\mathbb{Z})$ for $m\ge2$ and $r\ge0$: top homology with arbitrary coefficients is the kernel of an unsigned subset-inclusion matrix, and its integral diagonal form determines all primary summands. Every finite order occurs, with explicit representatives. Generalized theta classes span an embedded copy of the cokernel of the inclusion matrix, containing all torsion; for $r\ge m$ they generate the torsion, each of order $\operatorname{lcm}(1,\ldots,m)$. For every prime power $q$ and $m\ge q$, the graph $K_{m+1,m+q-1}$ is minimal in the minor order for order-$q$ torsion in $H_{m-1}(\mathbb{B}_m)$. In particular, odd torsion first appears in $H_2(\mathbb{B}_3K_{4,5})\cong\mathbb{Z}^{155}\oplus(\mathbb{Z}/2)^4\oplus\mathbb{Z}/3$, and no proper minor of $K_{4,5}$ has odd torsion in $H_2(\mathbb{B}_3)$. For arbitrary part sizes, we give a multiplicity-free decomposition of $H_m(\mathbb{B}_mK_{a,b};\mathbb{Q})$ under vertex permutations and prove that $H_{m-1}(\mathbb{B}_mK_{a,b};\mathbb{Z})$ has no $p$-primary torsion when $a,b\ge2m-1$ and $p\ge m$ is an odd prime. The explicit order-$q$ class retains its order under every enlargement of the second part of the graph, while for $m=q=p$ an odd prime it is killed by a specified enlargement of the first part.

Homotopy rigidity for quasitoric manifolds over a product of simplices

We consider a variation of the Cohomological Rigidity Problem: whether two quasitoric manifolds whose cohomology rings are isomorphic are homotopy equivalent. We show that if two quasitoric manifolds have isomorphic cohomology rings and the associated polytope of one of them is a product of simplices, then they are homotopy equivalent after localizing away from an explicit list of primes.

Integral string topology of the symplectic group and BV rigidity for compact Lie groups

We compute the integral Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) algebra $\mathbb{H}_*(L\mathrm{Sp}(n);\mathbb{Z})$ of the free loop space of the symplectic group. We then show that for a connected compact Lie group $G$ whose homology over a commutative ring $R$ is exterior on odd primitive generators, $\mathbb{H}_*(LG;R)$ is the BV algebra of the free loop space of the product of odd spheres with the classical exponents of $G$, tensored with the group ring of the torsion of $\pi_1(G)$. Conversely, over an integral domain the graded algebra $\mathbb{H}_*(LG;R)$ already determines the exponents and the group ring, hence the BV algebra. If moreover $G$ is simply connected, then $\mathbb{H}_*(LG;R)$, as a BV algebra, is the Hochschild cohomology of $H^*(G;R)$ with the BV operator induced by Poincaré duality.

Poincaré duality and module topological complexity

Topological complexity, introduced by Farber, measures the number of continuous local motion-planning rules on a configuration space. For every simply connected space $X$ of finite rational homotopy type whose rational cohomology is a finite-dimensional Poincaré duality algebra, we prove $\mathrm{MTC}(X)=\mathrm{TC}_0(X)=\mathrm{TC}_0^M(X)$, where $\mathrm{TC}_0(X)=\mathrm{TC}(X_{\mathbb Q})$ and $M$ denotes the monoidal invariant. No formality or ellipticity assumption is required. The result extends to higher topological complexity and gives product additivity under duality. For every map $f$ between simply connected spaces of finite rational homotopy type whose rationalization admits a homotopy retraction, we establish the sharp bound $\mathrm{Msecat}(f_{\mathbb Q})\leq\mathrm{secat}(f_{\mathbb Q})\leq\mathrm{relcat}(f_{\mathbb Q})\leq\mathrm{Msecat}(f_{\mathbb Q})+1$. In particular, $\mathrm{MTC}(X)\leq\mathrm{TC}_0(X)\leq\mathrm{MTC}(X)+1$ holds without a duality assumption. The proofs use controlled Sullivan resolutions and an ideal-valued criterion for relative category. For sections of fibrations with Poincaré duality fibre, we prove that a derived self-intersection formula, vanishing of Thom multiplication on the augmentation ideal, and ideal-valued evaluation are equivalent. This criterion yields equality of the three rational sectional invariants for smooth sections of smooth bundles over simply connected smooth bases of finite rational homotopy type, with closed simply connected manifold fibre, including rationally hyperbolic fibres. Equality also holds when the fibre has finite-dimensional total rational homotopy, without a cohomological dimension bound on the base, and for suitable finite relative Frobenius models. Geometric applications include sphere, Grassmann, and projective bundles.

Magnetic Higher-Form Symmetries as Dual Fundamental $\infty$-Groupoids

We develop a higher-geometric framework for magnetic higher-form symmetries of pre-quantum field theories. The magnetic (topological) charges of a sigma-model with stacky target are encoded by the shape of the target, equivalently of its stack of fields, which is op-dual to the flat automorphism group controlling electric symmetries. Magnetic symmetry backgrounds are obtained by dualizing these charges against a chosen moduli stack of topological field theories, generalizing Pontryagin duality, and act on the theory by stacking. Cohesive modalities allow for targets with non-finite and non-discrete data. When the dualizing stack is a grouplike $E_\infty$-object, we prove a fibration theorem expressing the magnetic symmetries of an electrically gauged theory in terms of those of the ungauged theory and of the gauge group, computed by a homotopy-fixed-point spectral sequence with an explicit first page. For moduli stacks of higher $U(1)$-gerbes with connection, encoding bulk topological local Lagrangians, we prove a factorization theorem: the magnetic symmetry backgrounds of any connected target split, non-canonically, into Pontryagin duals of its integral homology groups, and are necessarily flat, as a consequence of dualizing discrete charges against a target with connections. We illustrate both theorems with pure $\mathrm{Pin}^\pm(2)$ gauge theory: $O(2)$ carries invertible magnetic $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetries in form degrees $d-3$, $d-4$ and $d-5$ that are absent for $\mathrm{Pin}^-(2)$, the first two distinguished by a single differential of the spectral sequence. Gauging and physical applications are developed in upcoming work.

The Squire complex and its extensions revisited

The Squier complex $\mathcal{D}(\cP)$ has been defined in \cite{LDHM1} as a combinatorial 2-complex. Also several extensions of $\mathcal{D}(\cP)$ are defined and used extensively in \cite{LDHM2}, \cite{SES} and \cite{EP}. Since the results obtained in those papers rely on the assumption that $\mathcal{D}(\cP)$ and its extensions in \cite{LDHM2} and \cite{SES} are CW-complexes of dimensions 2 and 3, respectively, and no proofs are given to support these preconditions, we provide the respective proofs in the present paper.

A Complete Proof of $\mathsf{QMA}_1$-Hardness for Weighted Gapped Clique Homology

The computational complexity of simplicial homology has been studied since the question was raised by Kaibel and Pfetsch, and clique homology was later shown to be $\mathsf{QMA}_1$-hard by Crichigno and Kohler. King and Kohler subsequently introduced the weighted, spectrally gapped version considered here and developed a reduction intended to establish the same hardness result in this setting. We give a complete proof of the hard direction. The earlier King-Kohler argument contains a gap in the analysis of the nontrivially folded local gadgets, so the required topological and spectral properties have to be re-established on the clique complexes actually produced by the reduction. This is not a local repair of the published proof: the argument requires a new analysis of the local topology, the filtered cochain complexes, and the interaction of many overlapping gadgets. Our proof uses exact finite certificates for the local combinatorial data and relative homology to determine the effect of each gadget on the encoded qubit space. We then prove the finite-dimensional filtered-Hodge statement needed to recover the corresponding rank-one low-energy penalty and derive a quantitative global estimate that transfers the source-Hamiltonian promise gap to the final weighted Hodge Laplacian. Consequently, for fixed efficiently computable $k(n)$ and inverse-polynomial $\gamma(n)$, weighted gapped clique homology is $\mathsf{QMA}_1(\mathcal G)$-hard. The previously known $\mathsf{QMA}$-containment argument is logically independent of the gap and remains unaffected.

Eilenberg-MacLane spaces in A-homotopy theory

In this paper we study a discrete homotopy theory for undirected graphs. More precisely, we consider $A$-homotopy groups, first defined in the work of Barcelo, Kramer, Laubenbacher and Weaver. For every degree $n$ and every group $G$ (Abelian if $n\geq 2$), we construct a graph whose $n$-th $A$-homotopy group is isomorphic to $G$ and whose other $A$-homotopy groups all vanish. Using these, we show that for every infinite sequence of groups $G_1,G_2,\ldots$, with $G_i$ Abelian for $i\geq 2$, there is a graph $X$ such that the $i$-th $A$-homotopy group of $X$ is isomorphic to $G_i$ for all $i$. Along the way, we identify relative $A$-homotopy groups with relative classical homotopy groups, and prove a discrete version of the Blakers-Massey theorem. We then construct partial Postnikov systems and (full) Whitehead towers.

Equivariant Poincaré polynomial of type B Wonderful Models

We study the actions of hyperoctahedral groups on the cohomology of the minimal De Concini-Procesi wonderful models associated with reflection arrangements of type $B$. We express the generating series of their equivariant Poincaré polynomials in terms of the corresponding type $A$ series and the equivariant reduced characteristic series of type $B$. The key ingredient is a general inversion formula in equivariant incidence algebras relating equivariant Chow functions and super-reduced characteristic functions. Applying this formula to partition and signed partition lattices, we recover Getzler's compositional identity in type $A$ and establish its type $B$ analogue. We also obtain explicit plethystic and infinite-product formulas for the equivariant characteristic series of type $B$.

The Reeb Transform

Reeb Transforms offer a compact representation of how shapes in $\mathbb{R}^n$ change when sliced along varying directions. We define the Reeb Transform as the family of Reeb graphs induced by height functions along all directions in the unit sphere. In this paper, we develop a rigorous treatment of Reeb Transforms for o-minimal definable sets, with particular emphasis on one-dimensional stratified spaces embedded in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and on surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We establish injectivity of the Reeb Transform in multiple settings, including compact surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$, capturing the essential topological features needed to uniquely reconstruct such surfaces. However, in dimensions above three, the Reeb Transform ceases to be injective, indicating the limitations of this descriptor in higher-dimensional settings.

The zeroth stable homotopy groups of motivic spheres over the integers

The main result determines the zeroth integral Milnor-Witt stem of the motivic sphere spectrum in the Morel-Voevodsky motivic stable homotopy category of the integers. The component in weight zero is the Grothendieck-Witt ring of nondegenerate symmetric bilinear forms over the integers. Along the way, cellularity of connective Witt theory, as well as an absolute purity result for the {\eta}-inverted motivic sphere spectrum, is established over Dedekind domains of mixed characteristic.

Regular bundles on orbifolds II: ranks and obstructions

A regular complex bundle on an orbispace has fibres that are positive multiples of the stabilizers' regular representations. For stabilizers of order at most two, the sharp uniform rank bound in dimension five is $16$ for paracompact orbispaces and $4$ for closed oriented smooth orbifolds. Rank $16$ occurs with dense free locus and minimum regular rank $4$ on the nonfree locus. We also prove the sharp bound $16$ for closed oriented smooth six-orbifolds. We compute the stable regular index of cyclic gerbes over finite connected CW complexes as the least common multiple of the indices of their character twists. For paracompact orbispaces, optimal integral Adams multipliers give explicit rank bounds in terms of dimension and stabilizer orders. The least positive rank of an integral exterior-power expression with regular fibre and zero reduced class for every regular rank-four bundle on $S^4\times B\mu_2$ is $32$.

Stable Complex Structures On Real Vector Bundles Over Connected Sums Of Quaternionic Projective Spaces

For integers $n\ge 2$ and integers $\ell,m\ge 0$, not both zero, let $M^{4n}_{\ell,m}=\ell\,\mathbb{HP}^{n}\,\#\,m\,\overline{\mathbb{HP}^{n}}$ denote the connected sum of $\ell$ copies of the quaternionic projective space $\mathbb{HP}^{n}$ and $m$ copies of $\mathbb{HP}^{n}$ endowed with the opposite orientation. By analysing the image of the complexification map $c\,\colon\,\widetilde{KO}(M^{4n}_{\ell,m})\to\widetilde{K}(M^{4n}_{\ell,m})$, we characterise, in terms of Pontryagin classes, the real vector bundles over $M^{4n}_{\ell,m}$ admitting a stable complex structure, and deduce that $M^{4n}_{\ell,m}$ is stably almost complex if and only if $n=2$ and $\ell-m$ is even. Consequently no $M^{4n}_{\ell,m}$ with $n\ge 3$ admits an almost complex structure. Sato and Suzuki asserted the non-existence of almost complex structures on $M^{4n}_{\ell,m}$ in 1974 for $3\le n\le 10$, except possibly when $n=3$ and $\ell=3m+1$; we establish it for all $n\ge 3$, and in the stronger form of stable almost complex structures.

GW/PT-correspondence for CY 4-folds-I: Canonical Orientations

Double Steinberg coinvariants for special linear groups

For a field $F$ we study the coinvariants for the $SL_n(F)$-action on the double Steinberg module $St_n(F) \otimes St_n(F)$ and show they have a rich algebraic structure: for $n = 2$ it is the Grothendieck-Witt group of $F$, and for all $n$ they assemble to a graded nonunital $\mathbb{Z}[F^\times]$-algebra, whose rational (underived) indecomposables may be expressed in terms of the augmentation ideal of the Grothendieck-Witt group. We then explain, building on work of Galatius-Kupers-Randal-Williams, that the special linear groups $SL_n(F)$ assemble to an $E_\infty$-algebra in a suitable functor category, whose $E_2$-homology groups have a vanishing line of slope 2 and on the critical line are given by the double Steinberg coinvariants.

On the topology of the space of vacuum initial data sets

We show that the space of vacuum initial data sets on a closed manifold often has many non-trivial homotopy groups. The starting point is a result of the second named author, which constructs non-trivial elements in the homotopy groups of the space of initial data sets satisfying the strict dominant energy condition, together with a later result in joint work with Bernd Ammann showing that these elements often persist when the strictness assumption is dropped. In this work, we use a parametrized version of the conformal method to show that these elements may also be represented by maps into the space of vacuum initial data sets. This requires two results that may be of independent interest: metrics admitting conformal Killing vectors can be removed from the space of metrics without changing its weak homotopy type, and over the remaining metrics the York decomposition can be carried out in families, the TT-tensors forming a trivial Hilbert bundle. To our knowledge, this is the first result on the global topology of this space.
