Central Limit Theorems for Persistent Betti Numbers

Various persistent invariants have been developed in recent years. In this paper, we develop a method based on homological algebra for deriving central limit theorems for persistent Betti numbers associated with $\mathbb{R}$-indexed chain complexes constructed from a homogeneous Poisson point process of unit intensity on $\mathbb{R}^d$. Our method also applies to Gibbs point processes. This algebraic method reduces the verification of the required conditions to checking properties of the kernels and cokernels of add one maps between chain complexes. As an application, we recover the known central limit theorem for persistent Betti numbers arising from simplicial complex filtrations. In addition, we prove a central limit theorem for persistent Betti numbers of $\ell_p$-Vietoris-Rips simplicial homology, including blurred magnitude homology of random geometric graphs. We also establish central limit theorems for relative $\ell_p$-Vietoris-Rips homology and, in particular, for magnitude Betti numbers of random geometric graphs. These results suggest that our algebraic method can be applied more broadly to derive central limit theorems for persistent Betti numbers.

Aspherical manifolds with nonvanishing tautological classes

For every even integer $m\geq 2$, we construct a closed, orientable, smooth, aspherical $(2m+1)$-manifold whose fundamental group has nontrivial center and for which infinitely many tautological classes in the $\mathbb{F}_2$-cohomology of the classifying space of its group of homotopically trivial diffeomorphisms are nonzero and not nilpotent. Specializing the calculation to cohomological degree $0$ gives examples of such manifolds that do not bound compact smooth manifolds. These provide counterexamples to a conjecture of Hebestreit–Land–Lück–Randal-Williams.

Exactness of the 2-categories of abelian and triangulated categories

We introduce a notion of $2$-homological category modelled on pointed homological categories in the sense of Grandis, using bizero objects whose null $1$-cells are zero objects in the hom-categories for formulating $2$-dimensional pointedness. We first prove directly that the $2$-category of di-exact homological categories, which generalize Puppe exact categories, functors preserving all kernels and cokernels, and arbitrary natural transformations is $2$-homological. Its normal subcategories are saturated thick subcategories, and its exact quotients are constructed by a complete three-arrow fraction calculus similar to the one known for Puppe exact categories. We then adapt this proof to prove that the $2$-category of triangulated categories is also $2$-homological; here, instead of the ternary fractions we use the well-known Verdier fractions. Abstracting the common quotient structure of these proofs yields a general criterion, using which we further establish that the $2$-categories of pointed, additive and abelian categories are also $2$-homological. The criterion also applies to categories enriched in semimodules over a fixed commutative rig, with a zero object, and to their full sub-$2$-category with finite biproducts. Their quotients are linear congruence quotients. Combining enrichment with Puppe exactness gives further examples whose quotients are exact linear localizations, including linear abelian categories as the finite-biproduct case. In the abelian and triangulated cases the normal subcategories and quotients are, respectively, Serre subcategories and Serre quotients, and thick triangulated subcategories and Verdier localizations.

The topology of tridiagonal isospectral sets

We describe the topology of the set of tridiagonal symmetric real matrices with fixed non-simple spectrum. The tridiagonal isospectral set is not a submanifold of the corresponding orthogonal conjugacy class, but a collection of submanifolds which intersect cleanly. We show that the tridiagonal isospectral set is an aspherical space and that its Betti numbers are combinatorial numbers. This generalizes to arbitrary spectrum constructions and results known for simple spectrum. We also extend these results to split real semisimple Lie algebras.

Continuity of the normal cycle with respect to $C^0$ topologies

We show that the generalized curvatures and more specifically the normal cycle of a compact subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$ are continuous under weak notions of convergence, assuming an a priori mass bound. In particular, provided its mass remains bounded, the normal cycle behaves continuously when the subset is perturbed by a homeomorphism that is $C^0$-close to the identity. Our approach relies on a combination of persistent homology with the geometric measure theory framework classically used in the study of curvatures of singular sets. As an application, we prove that every compact definable set in an o-minimal structure admits a normal cycle by showing that any such set is a limit, in the above sense, of a family of smooth sets whose normal cycles have uniformly bounded mass. We also show that WDC sets are limits of nested smooth sets with uniformly bounded normal cycle masses.

Coarse moduli of motivic augmentations

A variety $X$ over a suitable base $Z$ gives rise to a highly structured algebra $C^*(X)$ in motives over $Z$. In turn, a $Z$-point gives rise to an augmentation $C^*(X) \to 1$. This assignment $X(Z) \to Aug(C^*(X))$ factors the so-called “unipotent Kummer map” to torsors under the unipotent fundamental group in realizations. In one direction, this suggests the possibility of “performing” Chabauty-Kim theory motivically without waiting for a motivic t-structure. In a different (largely independent) direction, we may hope to extract arithmetic information for use in bounding sets of integral points from the full rational homotopy type going beyond $\pi_1$. In both directions, the coarse space for motivic augmentations $Aug(C^*(X))$ would benefit from a structure of finite type $\mathbb{Q}$-variety, and similarly, the coarse space $Aug(C^*_{F\phi}(X))$ of augmentations in filtered $\phi$ modules would benefit from a structure of finite type $\mathbb{Q}_p$-variety. We establish two criteria for representability, compute these spaces in several examples, and construct a comparison with Selmer varieties. Finally, we demonstrate how these constructions lead to K-theoretic finiteness criteria in an example.

Stability Patterns for Spherical and Projective Braid Groups

McDuff and Segal proved homological stability for unordered configuration spaces of connected manifolds with non-empty boundary. Later, Church proved representation stability for ordered configuration spaces on compact manifolds. These stability patterns extend to surface braid groups and pure surface braid groups, respectively, whenever the associated configuration space is an Eilenberg–Maclane space. However, these results do not apply to braid groups and pure braid groups on $S^2$ and $\RP^2$ since ordered and unordered configuration spaces on these surfaces are not Eilenberg–Maclane spaces. This paper will use results by Cohen–Pakianathan and the theory of $\FI$-homology to extend known stability patterns to these unknown cases. This is a special case of a more general result proven in this paper: the equivariant homology of ordered and unordered configuration spaces exhibit representation stability and stable periodicity respectively.

Coleman Isomorphisms in Syntomic Cohomology and $\mathrm{THH}$

This paper proves a generalisation of Coleman's isomorphism (between norm compatible cyclotomic units and a group of invertible power series) to various cohomology theories evaluated on proper regular $p$-adic formal schemes, for future applications to Iwasawa theory. This generalisation is an immediate consequence of a description, as a cyclotomic synthetic spectrum, of the limit over transfer maps as one goes up the cyclotomic tower of motivically filtered $\mathrm{THH}$. This crucially uses a calculation of $\mathrm{THH}(\mathbb{Z}_p[\zeta_{p^n}])$ due to Devalapurkar–Raksit as well as a calculation of the free loop transfer due to Schlichtkrull. Along the way, we construct transfer maps for various cohomology theories along finite locally free regular maps, using some elements of $\mathbb{P}^1$-stable motivic homotopy theory.

Weak Lie 3-groups, 2-gerbes over torus fibrations of type F1, and T-Duality

We construct a weak Lie 3-group $T_2 \mathbb B^{F_1}_n$ from the 2-category of gerbes over $\mathbb R^n / \mathbb Z^n$ and the $\mathbb R^n/ \mathbb Z^n$-action on it by pullback along translations. We also construct a homotopy equivalence between $T_2 \mathbb B^{F_1}_n$ and a different Lie 3-group $T_2 \mathbb D^{F_1}_n$, which admits a dimensional reduction to the homotopy equivalence of Lie 2-groups introduced by Nikolaus and Waldorf to model half-geometric T-duality. This is a first step towards establishing a higher form of T-duality for 2-gerbes over torus fibrations, relevant to supergravity and M-theory.

Superconnections, descent, and monodromy on transversely holomorphic foliations

Let $X$ carry a transversely holomorphic foliation, equivalently an elliptic involutive structure $V\subset T_{\mathbb C}X$, and let ${\mathcal O}_V$ be its sheaf of leafwise-constant, transversely holomorphic functions. We construct a finite superconnection model for the derived category of coherent ${\mathcal O}_V$-modules. The key input is a mixed local reduction for finite Maurer–Cartan objects over the mixed de Rham–Dolbeault dga $(\wedge^\bullet V^\vee,d_V)$: a multiplicative homotopy contracts the real directions, after which Block's Dolbeault gauge theorem removes the positive transverse form degrees. For compact $X$, this gives an exact equivalence between the homotopy category of bounded finite-rank flat $V$-superconnections and $D^b_{\mathrm{coh}}(X,{\mathcal O}_V)$, interpolating between the de Rham and Dolbeault realizations. We prove locally finite Čech descent under necessary uniform amplitude and rank bounds, identify the coherent heart with equivariant coherent analytic sheaves on a transverse monodromy groupoid, and characterize descent to ordinary holonomy. For a holomorphic suspension, we identify the full superconnection category, up to Morita equivalence, with the homotopy fixed points of the Dolbeault category of the transversal and derive an equivariant Ext spectral sequence. Examples on $S^1$ and $S^2$ delimit when ordinary monodromy $1$-groupoids can recover the derived category.

Twisted Bicategorical Shadows and Traces

Bicategorical shadows provide a categorical framework that encompasses Hochschild homology and topological Hochschild homology (THH), encodes their Morita invariance, and extends the notion of trace from symmetric monoidal categories to bicategories. Certain equivariant variants, such as $C_n$-twisted THH, do not fit into the ordinary shadow framework. We introduce bicategories with $G$-twisting data and show that every ordinary shadow on such a bicategory induces, for each $g\in G$, a $g$-twisted shadow on the associated bicategory of $G$-twists. These $g$-twisted shadows are invariant under $G$-Morita equivalence; examples include $C_n$-twisted THH and twisted Hochschild homology of $C_n$-Green functors. We further define a $g$-twisted bicategorical trace that recovers the $g$-twisted Hattori–Stallings trace. For $C_n$-Green functors, the orbitwise $g$-twisted Hattori–Stallings traces assemble into a morphism of $C_n$-Mackey functors that, at the orbit $C_n/C_n$, recovers the degree-zero twisted Dennis trace.

Universality in the algebra and topology of cographs

A finite simple graph $G$ is called a cograph if it does not contain the path on four vertices $P_4$ as an induced subgraph. It is classically known that the family of cographs are well-quasi-ordered by the induced subgraph relation \cite{D}. In preceding work of Knudsen and the third author \cite[Theorem 7.2]{KR}, it was shown that this well-quasi-order statement admitted a categorification, which allowed those authors to prove universal finite generation statements about the homology groups of configuration spaces on cographs \cite[Theorem 1.5]{KR}. In this work, we expand \cite[Theorem 7.2]{KR} to be compatible with the family of polynomial rings on the vertex sets of cographs. By consequence, we are able to prove a number of universality results related with edge and toric ideals of these polynomial ring, partially generalizing and expanding upon work of Kahle \cite{kahle2019binomial}. We also conclude strong restrictions on the kinds of topologies that can arise from graph complexes and anchored configuration spaces associated to cographs, as well as combinatorial constraints on the possible combinatorics of hyperplane arrangements of cographs.

A topological version of the Cartan-Hadamard Theorem and asphericity complexity

We investigate a topological version of the Cartan-Hadamard theorem that allows one to study asphericity of spaces via distinguished families of paths. A topological space has the distinguished path property (dpp) if there exists a continuous map from the space $\Pi(X)$ of homotopy classes of paths (relative endpoints) to the path space $X^I$ that is a right inverse to the canonical quotient map. For complete metric spaces endowed with a locally convex metric, the distinguished paths are precisely the local geodesics. We show that if $X$ has the dpp, then its universal cover is contractible and, in particular, $X$ is aspherical. The space $\Pi(X)$ is a fiber bundle over $X$ whose fiber is the universal cover of $X$, and in the case of Riemannian manifolds of non-positive curvature it is naturally isomorphic to the tangent bundle. We prove that every aspherical CW-complex that is locally finite or countable has the dpp, and this allows us to reinterpret asphericity of CW-complexes in terms of the existence of continuous sections. We also define and study the notion of asphericity complexity of spaces by means of local sections from $\Pi(X)$ to $X^I$ and relate it to the concept of equivariant topological complexity introduced by Colman and Grant.

On The Rational Realization of Even-dimensional Spheres and Products of Eilenberg–MacLane Spaces as Classifying Spaces

In this paper, we study the rational realization problem for the classifying space $\B(X)$. We prove that if $S^{2n}$ is realized as $\B(X)$ for a simply-connected space $X$, then $X$ is $\pi$-infinite and has vanishing rational Gottlieb elements above degree $2n-1$. In particular, even-dimensional spheres cannot be realized as $B\mathrm{aut}_1(X)$ for any simply-connected $\pi$-finite space $X$. We also prove that, for all $n\geq 2$ and $s,t\geq 1$, the product of Eilenberg–MacLane spaces $K(\Q^s,n)\times K(\Q^t,n+1)$ cannot be realized as $B\mathrm{aut}_1(X)$ for any simply-connected $\pi$-finite space $X$. Moreover, we prove that if $r\geq 2$ and $n\geq 3$ and $K(\Q^r,n)$ is realized as $\B(X)$ for a $\pi$-finite space $X$, then $X\simeq_{\Q}K(\Q^r,n-1)$. The proofs are based on two structural results for Gottlieb elements in the derivation Lie algebra of a Sullivan minimal model, which provide a uniform method for these realization problems.

From configuration spaces to graph complexes via FA-modules

Work of Gadish and Hainaut (after Petersen) models the compactly supported cohomology of a wedge of circles as a polynomial functor. We identify the coefficients of this functor, $\Phi[n,m]$, via a cobar construction of $\mathbf{FA}$-modules. This identification formally implies that these coefficients will arise in computations of graph homology, and we use this result to give examples of graph complexes whose homology may be embedded in $H_c^\ast(F(S^1\vee S^1,n))$. This includes the Payne-Willwacher marked graph complex in genus 2, for which we give a new, explicit decomposition in terms of $\mathbf{FA}$-modules. This allows us to describe $\mathsf{gr}_{11}H_c^{\ast}(\mathcal{M}_{2,n})$ as the cohomology of a complex of decorated trees and to show, for example, $\mathsf{gr}_{11}H_c^{n+1}(\mathcal{M}_{2,n})=0$.

Khovanov monodromy groups via motions

For any link, we define a monodromy map from the motion group of the link to the group of automorphisms of the link's Khovanov homology. The image of this map is the unoriented monodromy group of the link. This map allows us to convert results concerning motion groups of links into ones about their Khovanov monodromy. In particular, we use a characterisation of the motion groups of split links to write their unoriented monodromy groups as an explicit semidirect product in terms of their unsplit pieces. We give some demonstrative examples, computing the unoriented monodromy groups of unlinks, Hopf links, and split links composed of pieces thereof.

Koszul Orlik–Solomon Algebras from Non-supersolvable Arrangements

The cohomology ring of the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement is given by its Orlik–Solomon algebra. It is known that the defining ideal of the Orlik–Solomon algebra has a quadratic Gröbner basis in the standard presentation if and only if the intersection lattice is supersolvable; such algebras are automatically Koszul. In 1997, Shelton and Yuzvinsky posed the question as to whether all Koszul Orlik–Solomon algebras arise from supersolvable arrangements. We answer this question negatively using three related constructions that produce non-supersolvable arrangements whose Orlik–Solomon algebras are Koszul. Moreover, these arrangements may be chosen to be irreducible, realizable over $\mathbb{Q}$, and of any rank $\geq 3$. Our constructions rely on a result of Falk and Proudfoot which we strengthen and generalize. In two of the three cases, we show non-supersolvability using a corrected form of a result of Ziegler regarding supersolvability of parallel connections. We also construct Koszul Orlik–Terao algebras coming from non-supersolvable arrangements.

Generalized Telescope Conjecture

We extend Balmer's tensor-triangular geometry to arbitrary presentably symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories $\mathcal V$ by introducing the atomic smashing frame. This construction is functorial in $\mathcal V$, recovers the classical Balmer spectrum in the stable compactly-rigidly generated case, and yields a formulation of the telescope conjecture for arbitrary $\mathcal V$. Using dualizable and locally rigid $\infty$-categories, we identify smashing ideals with locally rigid localizations and establish recollement results for smashing frames and atomic smashing frames. As a consequence, we obtain a recollement principle for the telescope conjecture. We also establish descent for the telescope conjecture along several natural classes of coverings. As a principal application to chromatic homotopy theory, we analyze the structure of the smashing frame of $\mathrm{Sp}$. We prove a prime decomposition in terms of the smashing frames of the $p$-local $\infty$-categories $\mathrm{Sp}_{(p)}$ and, at each prime, an embedding into the product of the smashing frames of the monochromatic layers $\mathrm{Sp}_{T(n)}$. In particular, the spatiality of the smashing frame of $\mathrm{Sp}$ reduces entirely to that of $\mathrm{Sp}_{T(n)}$. Beyond the stable setting, we characterize the telescope conjecture for $\infty$-topoi in terms of smashing fields, and for connective module categories and hypercomplete connective sheaves in terms of Pierce-type conditions. Finally, we introduce the Serre smashing frame. Over a connective $\mathbb{E}_\infty$-ring $R$, this frame sits between the atomic and usual smashing frames, providing an intermediate structural layer in the study of the telescope conjecture for the connective $R$-module $\infty$-category.

Poincare Polynomials of Heavy-Light Hassett Spaces

The Poincaré polynomials of the Deligne-Mumford space $\overline{M_{0,n}}$ of stable genus 0 curves have been widely studied by several authors such as Keel and Manin. These polynomials can be computed via a recursive formula that is combinatorial in nature, and their exponential generating functions satisfy elegant functional and differential equations. In this paper, we state some combinatorial formulas to the Poincaré polynomials of Hassett's heavy-light moduli spaces $\overline{M_{0,w_{m,n}}}$, with $m$ heavy marked points and $n-m$ light marked points. We express the Poincaré polynomials recursively in terms of the Möbius function of a certain lattice of set partitions. In the case of $m=2$, we get a Losev-Manin space. We give an explicit formula for the Poincaré polynomial or $\overline{M_{0,w_{2,n}}}$ by counting ordered set partitions; and give a recursive formula for this polynomial similar to that in the setting of $\overline{M_{0,n}}$. We prove this recursive formula using geometric and topological properties of the stratification of Losev-Manin spaces; and use an exponential generating function to simplify this recursive formula. Finally, we give a remarkable generalization to the ordered Bell numbers and a recurrence relation for this generalization.

Homology Nilpotency in Rational Homotopy Theory: Cell Attachments, Retractive Towers, Divergence, and Stabilization

Homology nilpotency of a simply connected minimal Sullivan algebra $M$ is the least integer $n$ for which $(M^+)^{n+1}$ is contained in an acyclic differential ideal. We develop lower- and upper-bound criteria, including methods for rational cell attachments, and construct an explicit finite-type minimal Sullivan algebra $M$ satisfying $nil_h(M)=3<Hnil(M)=4$. Complete strictly coordinated retractive towers identify the obstruction: they characterize homotopical nil-length while exposing the additional quotient defect measured by homology nilpotency. We then show that this rigid defect disappears after stabilization by degreewise finite wedges of simply connected rational spheres: $$ Hnil_s(X)=cat_o(X) $$ for every simply connected rational space $X$ of finite type.

Super $K$-theory and group completion

We develop a spectrum-level graded $K$-theory for real super Banach algebras. Our construction is categorical and homotopy theoretic, in the style of algebraic $K$-theory: the graded $K$-theory spectrum is obtained by a (co)fiber sequence from the $(\infty,1)$-categorical group completion of topological groupoids of finitely generated projective graded modules, rather than from spaces of Fredholm operators or Kasparov cycles. We define a connective spectrum $k^{\mathrm{ABS}}_A$ refining the Atiyah–Bott–Shapiro construction as a cofiber, together with its periodification $K^{\mathrm{gr}}_A$, and show that both are lax symmetric monoidal and functorial in bimodules, not merely in homomorphisms. The failure of graded $A$-modules to present all cocycles in $K^{\mathrm{gr}}_0(A)$ is shown to be purely a $\pi_0$-phenomenon on $k^{\mathrm{ABS}}_A$. We obtain a natural equivalence $K^{\mathrm{gr}}_{A\widehat{\otimes} \mathrm{Cl}_{p,q}} \simeq \Sigma^{p-q}K^{\mathrm{gr}}_A$, which links topological Bott periodicity with the Morita equivalence between $\mathrm{Cl}_8$ and $\mathbb{R}$. Restricting to invertible finite-dimensional semisimple super algebras yields a symmetric monoidal functor $\operatorname{Pic}(\operatorname{Bim}(\mathrm{sBan}_{\mathbb{R}})^{\mathrm{fd}}) \to \operatorname{Pic}(\mathrm{Mod}(KO))$ which splits off the bottom three Postnikov layers of $\operatorname{Pic}(\mathrm{Mod}(KO))$, giving a direct link between super division algebras and invertible $KO$-modules. We also give spectral refinements of Karoubi's and van Daele's graded $K$-groups, with explicit comparison equivalences, therefore connecting to $KK$-theory. We also provide an extensive general treatment for $K$-theory of ungraded topological rings that might be of independent interest. In particular, we characterize connective topological $K$-theory of ungraded Banach algebras by a universal property.

Parabolic Homotopy Colimits and Coxeter Descents

Let $G$ be a compact, connected, simply connected semisimple Lie group with Weyl group $W$ and simple reflections $S$. For a simplicial complex $\mathcal K$ on $S$, form the homotopy colimit $X_{\mathcal K}(G)=\operatorname*{hocolim}_{I\in\mathcal K}G/G_I$ of standard partial flag manifolds. We compute its integral homology. If $\operatorname{Des}_R(w)$ is the right descent set of $w\in W$ and $\ell(w)$ its Coxeter length, then $$ H_n(X_{\mathcal K}(G);\mathbb Z)\cong \bigoplus_{w\in W}\widetilde H_{n-2\ell(w)-1}(\mathcal K_{\operatorname{Des}_R(w)};\mathbb Z). $$ Thus the induced subcomplexes of $\mathcal K$ supply the topological data, while the Weyl group determines which subcomplex occurs and the Schubert-degree shift. The proof gives a chain-level splitting and an integral Morse reduction. We derive homotopy detection, duality and rigidity results, and recover polyhedral products, matroid–Tutte formulas, and the adjoint sphere as special cases.

Keller sequences of exact $\infty$-categories

We show that algebraic K-theory is localising with respect to this family, and use this to give a categorical proof of Quillen's resolution theorem. Our arguments hinge upon a mapping space characterisation of special inclusions as studied by Keller, from which we deduce another proof of Keller's theorem that such inclusions induce fully faithful functors on stable envelopes.

Parametrized LS category and group actions

We introduce a new invariant associated to an action of a group $G$ on a (possibly non-commutative) group $K$. The invariant is based on the $G$-parametrized LS-category of the semi-direct product $K\rtimes G$ but it also depends on a choice of a derivation $d\colon G\to K$. The invariant is thus denoted $\operatorname{tc}(d)$ and it takes integer values between $\operatorname{cd}(K)$ and $\operatorname{cd}(K)+\operatorname{cd}(G)$ (where $\operatorname{cd}(G)$ stands for the cohomological dimension of a group). We develop a general theory and then compute its values for a number of important examples, including fundamental groups of mapping tori, of pure braid groups and of iterated semi-direct products of free groups. To achieve this, we relate $\operatorname{tc}(d)$ to the cohomological dimension of its factors, to the sectional category of the inclusion of $G$ in $K\rtimes G$, and to the properties of torsors that are associated to the derivation $d$.

Weighted persistence intensity regression

Persistence diagrams summarize the multiscale topological structure of data, and in applications they often arrive paired with covariates. We develop nonparametric methodology and theory for estimating the expected weighted persistence diagram conditional on a Euclidean covariate. Representing each weighted diagram as a finite random measure on a compact window, we take the density of its conditional expectation as the regression target, the conditional weighted persistence intensity. For a conditional double-kernel estimator we establish finite-sample sup-norm rates with a matching minimax lower bound, uniform rates in partial optimal transport, and an unbiased-risk cross-validation criterion for bandwidth selection. Simulations with analytically known intensities corroborate the theory and show that cross-validation selects the oracle candidate bandwidth in the exact-intensity design. The method is illustrated by studying how radial geometry in cerebral artery trees varies with age.

Equivariant formality and representation theory

Let $G$ be a compact connected Lie group and $K$ its connected Lie subgroup. Using the $K$-theoretic version of equivariant formality developed in [F2] which involves analysis of vector bundles over $G/K$, we find two characterizations of equivariant formality of the isotropy action of $K$ on $G/K$. The first one equates equivariant formality with a "smoothness" condition of the restriction map of the representation ring of $G$ to that of $K$. The second characterization asserts that equivariant formality amounts to the equivariant $K$-theoretic index pairing of two certain special $K$-theory classes being nontrivial in some sense. By applying these characterizations, we are able to give a representation theoretic criterion for equivariant formality of the isotropy action by a circle subgroup, as well as an invariant theory criterion for the case where $K$ is a torus of dimension one less than the rank of $G$, culminating in a complete classification of equivariant formality where $G$ is further assumed to be simple.
