Deformations of Compact Calabi–Yau and Fano Varieties with Isolated Singularities

Let $X$ be a compact log-canonical Kähler $n$-fold, $n\ge3,$ with trivial canonical sheaf and with isolated singularities. We prove that the generic fibres of a semi-universal deformation of $X$ have Du Bois invariant $b^{1,n-2}=0$ at the singular points. Under a certain topological hypothesis on $X$ the generic fibres have also link invariant $l^{1,n-2}=0.$ If $X$ is a projective log-canonical $n$-fold, $n\ge3,$ with ample anti-canonical sheaf and with isolated singularities then the generic fibres have $b^{1,n-2}=l^{1,n-2}=0$ (without the topological hypothesis). These are generalizations of recent results of Tenie `Global smoothing of singular Fano and Calabi–Yau varieties' and an older result of Namikawa `Deformation theory of Calabi–Yau threefolds and certain invariants of singularities.'

An integral Hyodo–Kato isomorphism

Let $\mathscr{O}_K$ be a mixed characteristic complete DVR with perfect residue field $k$, and let $\mathfrak{X}$ be a proper formal scheme over $\mathscr{O}_K$ with semistable reduction. Answering a question of Fontaine and Jannsen, a classical theorem of Hyodo and Kato gives a rational identification between the log crystalline cohomology of the special fiber $\mathfrak{X}_0$ over $W(k)^0$ with the de Rham cohomology of the generic fiber $\mathfrak{X}_K$. In this note, we use a log variant of the saturated de Rham–Witt complex of Bhatt–Lurie–Mathew to prove that such a comparison holds integrally.

Deciding superellipticity and computing the Weierstrass normal form

Let \( \mathcal{S}_{g,n} \subset \mathcal{M}_g \) be the locus of curves of genus \( g \geq 2 \) admitting a model \( y^n = h(x) \) with \( h \) separable; such curves $C$ have a cyclic group \( C_n \leq \operatorname{Aut}(C) \) of order \( n \) with \( C/C_n \cong \mathbb{P}^1 \). % We give an algorithm which, given an absolutely irreducible plane model \( F(x,y) = 0 \) of a curve \( C \) over a field \( k_0 \) of characteristic zero, decides for which \( n \) the curve lies in \( \mathcal{S}_{g,n} \) and returns a model \( y^n = h(x) \) together with the birational transformation to it.

Bounded cohomology property on Jacobian elliptic surfaces with simplicial Mori cones

Let $X$ be a Jacobian elliptic surface with finite Mordell-Weil group and exactly one reducible fiber. We prove that if $\chi(\mathcal O_X)\ge \rho(X)$, then the Mori cone of $X$ is simplicial. As an application, assuming additionally $q(X)=0$, we show that $X$ satisfies the bounded cohomology property (BCP): there exists a constant $c_X>0$ such that $h^1(\mathcal O_X(C))\le c_X h^0(\mathcal O_X(C))$ for every curve $C$ on $X$. We also establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the BCP to hold on minimal smooth projective surfaces $Y$ with $\kappa(Y)\ge 1$, $q(Y)=0$, and rational polyhedral Mori cones.

Hodge–Tate splitting and Akizuki–Nakano vanishing in positive characteristic

We introduce the notion of Hodge–Tate splitting for schemes in positive characteristic. For a smooth variety $X$ over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $p > 0$, we say that $X$ is Hodge–Tate split if the natural morphism $\mathcal{O}_X \to F_*\Omega^\bullet_{X/k}$ induced by the absolute Frobenius admits a splitting in $\mathcal{D}_{\mathrm{qcoh}}(X)$. We prove that this condition is equivalent to the existence of a decomposition $F_*\Omega^\bullet_{X/k} \simeq \bigoplus_{i=0}^{\dim X}\Omega^i_{X/k}[-i]$ of its de Rham complex. Consequently, for smooth projective varieties, Hodge–Tate splitting implies Akizuki–Nakano vanishing and the $E_1$-degeneration of the Hodge-to-de Rham spectral sequence. Furthermore, we establish criteria and permanence properties for Hodge–Tate splitting and use them to construct many new examples of varieties whose de Rham complexes decompose. These include blow-ups of quasi-$F$-split varieties along strata of simple normal crossings divisors, complete intersections in toric varieties, and linearly reductive quotients of Hodge–Tate split varieties. Among these examples, we obtain smooth projective varieties whose Hodge-to-de Rham spectral sequences degenerate at $E_1$, whereas their Hochschild–Kostant–Rosenberg spectral sequences do not degenerate. As an application in mixed characteristic, we prove an Akizuki–Nakano-type vanishing theorem for smooth projective globally $+$-regular varieties over the Witt ring of a perfect field.

Exceptional points on Atkin–Lehner quotients

We study the rational points on the star curve $X_0^*(N) := X_0(N)/W(N)$, the quotient of the classical modular curve $X_0(N)$ by the full group of Atkin–Lehner involutions, for squarefree levels $N$. Rational points on $X_0^*(N)$ parameterize $\mathbb{Q}$-curves, i.e.\ elliptic curves $E/\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ that are isogenous to all of their Galois conjugates. Elkies conjectures that $X_0^*(N)$ has only CM or cuspidal rational points for all large enough $N$. We call any other rational points "exceptional". In this article, we provide new examples of exceptional points in genus 3 and 4, and we give evidence that no exceptional points exist in genus $g \geq 5$. Moreover, we investigate the underlying geometric reasons that might "explain" why these exceptional points arise in the first place, in the vein of Ogg and Mazur. In particular, we propose geometric explanations for Galbraith's exceptional points on $X_0^*(137)$ and $X_0^*(311)$.

Resultant of an equivariant polynomial system with respect to a direct product of $r$ symmetric groups

In this paper we study the resultant of systems of homogeneous multivariate polynomials which are equivariant under the action of a direct product of symmetric groups. We first treat, in detail, the case of a product of two symmetric groups, and establish a decomposition formula for the resultant of such systems. We then show that this decomposition, together with the underlying combinatorics, extends to an arbitrary (finite) direct product of $r$ symmetric groups. Thanks to these decomposition formulas, we prove that the discriminant of a multivariate homogeneous polynomial invariant under a direct product of $r$ symmetric groups splits into a product of resultants of smaller size that are easier to compute.

Infinite transitivity of tame groups of automorphisms of affine spaces

For positive integers $n$ and $m$, we study the actions of the groups of tame automorphisms of the $n$-dimensional affine spaces over finite fields on ordered subsets of $m$ points. Our primary interest lies in constructing tame automorphisms that take one ordered sequence to another and in proving upper and lower bounds on the maximal complexity of such automorphisms. Our preferred measure of complexity of an automorphism is the maximum of the degrees of the polynomials that define it and its inverse. Using methods and results from various branches of mathematics, including the theory of symmetric groups, affine geometry over finite fields, polynomial interpolation, combinatorics of projective spaces over fields, and polynomial automorphisms, we obtain a wide variety of qualitative and quantitative results.

On a construction of hermitian metrics on holomorphic vector bundles

With any holomorphic vector bundle $E$ over a compact base one can associate a line bundle, denoted $O_{PE}(1)$. According to a conjecture of Griffiths, if $O_{PE}(1)$ admits a positively curved hermitian metric $k$, then $E$ also admits a positively curved hermitian metric, $h$. In this paper we show that, while the conjecture may be correct, it is not possible to obtain $h$ out of $k$ by a fiberwise construction that is functorial.

Weighted Syzygies of Pointed Curves

For a point $P$ on a smooth projective curve $C$ of genus $g$, the section ring $R_d = R(C,\mathcal{O}_C(dP))$ can be minimally presented as a quotient $S_d/I_d$ where $S_d$ is a $\mathbb{Z}$-graded polynomial ring. Motivated by Green's $N_p$ properties for projective embeddings, we investigate the syzygies of $R_d$ over $S_d$ in low degrees $d$ when $R_d$ is not generated in degree 1. We bound the degrees of the generators of $R_d$ and prove uniform column-by-column bounds on the support of the Betti table of $R_d$ over $S_d$. We compute the weighted regularity of $R_d$ and show that if $d$ is larger than the Frobenius number of $P$ then $R_d$ satisfies the weighted $N_p$ condition, where $p=g-1-\binom{d-g}{2}$. Finally, we give sufficient criteria for the Betti numbers to be determined explicitly and show that for ordinary points, the resolution of $R_{g+1}$ is pure.

The Absolute Twistor Line and the Geometry of $\overline{\text{Spec}\, \mathbf Z}$

We construct the absolute algebraic geometry of the compactification $\overline{\text{Spec}\, \mathbf Z}$ by amalgamating the affine absolute curve $(\text{Spec}\, \mathbf Z)_{\mathbf{F}_{1}}$ with an archimedean component defined over the signed extension $\mathbf{F}_{1^2}$ of $\mathbf{F}_1$. By adjoining a formal imaginary unit to the absolute projective line, we obtain an equivariant topos endowed with a canonical geometric inversion symmetry, which induces the twistor real structure on its complex points. This archimedean geometry is incorporated into a global absolute curve defined as an internal object of the odd arithmetic topos, dual to the multiplicative monoid of odd positive integers, and governed by the intrinsic Hopf structure of spherical $\mathbf{F}_{1^2}$-algebras. The restriction of the absolute Frobenius action to odd integers is forced arithmetically by the extension of scalars to $\mathbf{F}_{1^2}$. On complex points, the resulting dynamics simultaneously generates the Adams operations and complex conjugation on real Hodge structures. At the categorical level, the odd arithmetic topos originates in the pericyclic category, whose $\lambda$-operations provide a conceptual interpretation of the local factors of geometric L-functions.

Thom series in negative relative codimension

We develop a theory of Thom series for contact function singularities. Quadratic stabilization $\sigma_q$ of a contact singularity $\eta\in J^k(n,1)$ gives contact singularities $\sigma_q^{i}\eta\in J^k(n+i,1)$. We study the stable Thom polynomials (i.e.\ the Thom polynomial in quotient variables) of $\sigma_q^{i}\eta$ as $i$ increases. To this end, we define the Thom series of a contact function singularity $\eta$, which for any given $i$ is a linear combination of Schur polynomials $s_\lambda$. For large enough $i$ the value of the Thom series at $1-(n+i)$ is the stable Thom polynomial of $\sigma_q^i\eta$ and for small $i$ it determines its coefficients outside the kernel of a specialization map. We prove that the Thom series has two main properties: 1) as $i$ increases, the partitions $\lambda$ follow a simple stabilization pattern, and there is a finite set of $\lambda$ which generates the support of the entire Thom series via this stabilization; 2) the coefficients of the $s_\lambda$ are polynomials in $i$ with explicit degree bounds. We describe the precise relationship between unstable and stable Thom polynomials of contact function singularities and Legendre Thom polynomials and we carry out computations of all three, as follows. We compute the complete family of stable Thom polynomials for function singularities with $\gamma\leq 6$. We compute unstable and Legendre Thom polynomials for several families of binary and ternary singularities. We define a class of multi-binary singularities, and compute their Thom polynomials. We discuss second order Thom-Boardman classes, and indicate difficulties that arise beyond function singularities. The results of the paper will be used in a companion paper, where Thom polynomials will be applied to problems in enumerative geometry.

Nonexistence of degree two rational multisections of conic bundles over the plane

We prove that a standard conic bundle $X \to \mathbb P^2_{\mathbb C}$ whose discriminant is very general of degree at least 18 admits no rational multisections of degree two. This is the first step towards proving a conjecture of Iskovskikh that there are conic bundle threefolds that are not unirational, since to prove that $X$ is not unirational, it suffices to show that there are no rational multisections of any degree. Proving Iskovskikh's conjecture would provide the first example of a rationally connected variety that is not unirational.

Subleading Collinear Limits of Yang-Mills Amplitudes from Gravity

We show that the subleading collinear sector of Yang-Mills (YM) amplitudes is controlled by ordinary Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) amplitudes and their higher-derivative corrections. The complete set of strict subleading collinear limits associated with an equal-helicity collinear pair can be extracted from open-closed string disk amplitudes. The latter generate $\frac12 (n-3)!$ BCJ-like relations with non-linear kinematic coefficients, reducing the $(n-3)!$ collinear data to a basis of dimension $\frac12 (n-3)!$. This reduced basis can be represented by gravitational amplitudes in EYM theories and by their higher-derivative open-string corrections. At multiplicity $n$ this gravitational basis consists of the $(n-4)!$ independent EYM subamplitudes together with $\frac12 (n-5)(n-4)!$ higher-order corrections involving one graviton and $n-2$ gluons. The resulting decomposition is governed by unsigned Stirling numbers of the first kind: the ordinary EYM amplitudes correspond to the sector $\left[{n-3\atop 1}\right]$, the higher-order BCJ-like relations to even sectors $\left[{n-3\atop 2j}\right]$, and the higher-derivative EYM corrections to odd sectors $\left[{n-3\atop 2j+1}\right]$ with $j\geq 1$.

Bosonic codes from compact phase spaces

We present the algebraic structure of bosonic quantum error-correcting codes on genus-two Riemann surfaces. We explicitly construct the code words as automorphic forms and analytically generate the full tower of code spaces at all weights. We prove a fundamental no-go theorem: for any genus greater than one, the stabilizer group is non-amenable, forcing a strictly positive spectral gap in the stabilizer Hamiltonian. Consequently, no normalizable quantum state can satisfy all stabilizer conditions. This sharply contrasts with standard Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) codes, where the amenability of the stabilizer group $\mathbb{Z}^2$ permits approximate code words with arbitrary precision.

Finiteness and rigidity of optimal destabilizing subvarieties for the J-equation

We prove that when the J-equation does not admit a smooth solution, there is always only a finite number of obstructing optimally destabilizing curves and divisors on compact Kähler manifolds of any dimension. For threefolds, this establishes the unconditional finiteness of all optimally destabilizing subvarieties. We moreover characterize the union of these optimal subvarieties, proving that they are contained in the locus where a natural continuity path loses local smooth compactness. Finally, to address subvarieties that are neither curves nor divisors, we prove a rigidity criterion which prevents optimal cycles from moving in compact one-parameter families, with further consequences for their deformation and symmetry properties.

Semiorthogonal decompositions of stable $\infty$-categories

We define semiorthogonal decompositions of stable $\infty$-categories of length $n$, extending the theory of semiorthogonal decompositions presented in arXiv:2106.02873. Prior to this, we explicitly construct an equivalence of $\infty$-categories relating Waldhausen diagrams to coherent complexes in stable $\infty$-categories. This allows us to view semiorthogonal decompositions from two different perspectives, each of which has its unique advantages and disadvantages. Under mild conditions, we prove a reconstruction theorem for semiorthogonal decompositions, recovering a stable $\infty$-category as the (op)lax limit of a diagram formed by the subcategories constituting its decomposition. We apply this reconstruction in the case of Beilinson's exceptional collection, to obtain a reconstruction of $D^b(\text{Coh}(\mathbb{P}^n))$.

Degenerations of elliptic quartics and K-moduli of Fano threefolds

We study the K-moduli space of Fano threefolds obtained by first blowing up $\mathbb{P}^3$ along an elliptic quartic curve $C$ and then blowing up a fiber $\ell_p$ of the exceptional divisor $E \to C$. We prove that this K-moduli space is isomorphic to a VGIT quotient parametrizing pairs $(C,p)$, with linearization induced by the CM line bundle. In particular, we classify all K-(semi/poly)stable members of this deformation family. The main new ingredients in the proof include the geometry of the Hilbert scheme of elliptic quartic curves, deformation theory of Fano–K3 pairs, and optimal bounds on the local volumes of threefold singularities.

An Explicit Belyi Map for the Wiman Sextic and Cusp Forms for a Noncongruence Subgroup

In this paper, we explicitly determine an algebraic Belyi function on a unique smooth projective model $\widetilde{W}$ of the Wiman sextic curve $W$ and describe its complex uniformization in terms of modular functions associated with a certain noncongruence subgroup $\Gamma_{\widetilde{W}} \subset {\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. As an application, we give a direct proof of the unbounded denominators conjecture in weight $2$ for $\Gamma_{\widetilde{W}}$. The conjecture is now known in full generality by the work of Calegari, Dimitrov, and Tang, following earlier progress including work of Dong, Lin, and Ng. Our proof, however, uses a degeneration of $\widetilde{W}$ over $\mathbb{F}_{5}$ together with explicit Puiseux series expansions and is substantially different from the methods employed in their work.

Kempe factorizations for rational curves on $\operatorname{SO}_4(\mathbb{R})$

We study constructive Kempe factorizations for rational curves on $\operatorname{SO}_4(\mathbb{R})$. Motivated by motion-polynomial factorization and rational matrix curves on real classical groups, we prove that every rational curve of degree $2d$ with $d\ge1$ first factors into $d$ quadratic rational curves and then into a product of at most $2d$ planar rotation curves, where each planar rotation curve fixes a two-dimensional plane pointwise. The construction proceeds by extracting left and right isoclinic polynomial parts via Cayley's factorization, factoring the corresponding quaternion polynomials, and pairing linear factors with equal norm polynomials. The resulting algorithms are explicit and are illustrated by examples.

Inherent Trade-offs when Enforcing Correct Data Symmetries in Multi-head Self-attention

We give a complete characterization of equivariant multi-head self-attention (MHSA): if an MHSA layer is equivariant to a symmetry group $G$, then $G$ can only act by permuting head-clusters, with QK and OV matrices satisfying an equivariance constraint tied to the group action. As a consequence, we prove that any fixed MHSA architecture that achieves exact equivariance by polynomially parameterizing unconstrained MHSA parameters inevitably leads to expressivity loss within the class of equivariant maps: the equivariance locus of unconstrained MHSA forms a union of extremely many Zariski-irreducible components in a reduced parameter space, and any single architecture covers at most one. For $G=D_4$ acting on $C$ copies of the regular representation as the token feature space, we show that there are $\Omega(C^{64})$ components for eight attention heads. We illustrate this with experiments on artificial tasks and show that the predicted head-cluster structures can arise naturally when the attention layer is pressured to become equivariant.

GIT for root stacks and 3d mirror symmetry

Using window theory, Bodzenta–Donovan showed that the derived category of a root stack $\sqrt[n]{X/D}$ has a $2n$-periodic $2$-term semiorthogonal decomposition. We define a categorical generalization of the root stack construction and interpret this as a pullback on the B-side of the 3d mirror symmetry equivalence of Gammage–Hilburn–Mazel-Gee. We analyze this pullback using categorical representation theoretic results of Ben-Zvi–Francis–Nadler and Ben-Zvi–Nadler–Preygel applied to SODs. We also show that the pullback is equivalent to a pushforward of perverse schobers on the A-side, allowing us to deduce periodicity from a simple decomposition of an A-side Lagrangian skeleton. Additionally, we adapt the construction of Bodzenta–Donovan to a new GIT problem, which yields an embedding of Coh($\sqrt[m]{X/D}$) into Coh($\sqrt[n]{X/D}$) for $m<n$ coprime, and prove $2n$-periodicity of the resulting $2$-term SOD.

Thresholds of singularities in characteristic zero

We study properties of characteristic zero variants of Frobenius thresholds $c^J(\mathfrak a)$ inspired by the work of Epstein-McDonald-R.G. and the second author. Suppose $R$ is an excellent domain of equal characteristic zero with a dualizing complex and $\mathfrak a, J \subseteq R$ are nonzero ideals with $\mathfrak a \subseteq \sqrt{J}$. By using a log resolution of singularities $Y$ of $(R, \mathfrak a)$ as well as the derived global sections of a line bundle on $Y$, we construct two analogs of the Frobenius threshold, the Hironaka-threshold and the Koszul-Hironaka threshold. We show that these two thresholds agree for parameter ideals and are always rational numbers. We prove that these thresholds also share many of the properties of the classical Frobenius threshold, especially for parameter ideals. If $R$ is regular, we show that the set of thresholds coincides with the set of possible multiplier-ideal-jumping numbers. Finally, we show that for parameter ideals in a Kawamata log terminal ring, our thresholds coincide with the limit of the Frobenius thresholds of the mod-$p$-reductions as $p$ goes to infinity. There is even a version of this without that Kawamata log terminal hypothesis.

We compute a bound of the dimensions of the strata whenever are non-empty. Finally, we present applications to Brill-Noether Theory and describe differences between moduli spaces under change of polarization for rank $2$ vector bundles on $\mathbb{F}_e$.
