Poisson bialgebras by deformations-to-quasiclassical limits

Poisson algebras are the quasiclassical limits of associative algebra deformations of commutative associative algebras. This paper extends this process to the level of bialgebras. We derive Poisson bialgebras as the quasiclassical limits of antisymmetric infinitesimal bialgebra deformations of commutative and cocommutative antisymmetric infinitesimal bialgebras. It might be regarded as the “infinitesimal" version of the quantization process of Lie bialgebras in terms of Hopf algebras. Such deformations-quasiclassical limits process for a Poisson bialgebra is equivalently characterized in terms of the introduced notions of deformations of a matched pair of associative algebras as well as a standard Manin triple of associative algebras, whose corresponding quasiclassical limits are a matched pair of Poisson algebras and a standard Manin triple of Poisson algebras, respectively. We illustrate these equivalent deformations-quasiclassical limits processes via coherent derivations.

Truncations of the ring of number-theoretic functions, revisited

Let $K$ be a field containing $\mathbb{Q}$, let $\Gamma$ be the ring of all functions from the positive integers to $K$ under Dirichlet convolution, and let $\Gamma_n$ be its truncation to functions supported on $[1,n]$. In [Snellman, Homology Homotopy Appl. 2 (2000), 17-27; arXiv:math/9904143] it was shown that $\Gamma_n$ is a polynomial ring modulo a monomial ideal $I_n$ which is stable after reversing the order of the variables, and the Poincare-Betti series of $\Gamma_n$ was computed in terms of the numbers $C_{n,v}$ of minimal generators of $I_n$ of least support $v$. We prove that $C_{n,v} = \Phi(n,p_v)$, Legendre's sifting function: the number of integers in $[1,n]$ free of prime factors $\le p_v$. This identifies an invariant of a minimal free resolution with a classical object of sieve theory, and it refines to the grading by total degree, with the number of prime factors carried in a variable. As consequences we obtain: a proof of Conjecture 4.6 of the 2000 paper, which was left open there; the asymptotics $C_n \sim \pi(n)^2/2$ of the total number of minimal generators, showing that the lower bound $C_n \ge \binom{\pi(n)+1}{2}$ of that paper is asymptotically sharp, together with the exact order $C_n - \binom{\pi(n)+1}{2} \sim \frac{16}{3} n^{3/2} / \log^3 n$ of the error; and the identification of $C_n$ with the OEIS sequence A182843. We also record errata for the 2000 paper: one stated result is false, one worked example is miscomputed, and two proofs are incomplete. Corrected statements and complete proofs are given.

The arithmetic rank of nullcones of classical invariant rings

We compute the arithmetic rank of nullcone ideals arising from natural actions of the special linear, orthogonal, and symplectic groups on direct sums of copies of their standard and dual representations. Over an infinite field of characteristic different from two, we show that the arithmetic rank equals the Krull dimension of the invariant ring, and compute this dimension. In positive characteristic, the required lower bounds are not detected by local cohomology, and are obtained using étale cohomology.

Weakly Newton-nondegenerate binomial ideals

An ideal $I$ of a polynomial ring $R=k[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ is called weakly Newton-nondegenerate, or weakly NND, if its integral closure $\overline{I}$ is a monomial ideal. We study weak Newton nondegeneracy for the family of quadratic binomial ideals \[ I=(x_1^2+\epsilon_1x_{a_1}x_{b_1},\ \dots,\ x_n^2+\epsilon_nx_{a_n}x_{b_n}),\qquad \epsilon_i\in\{\pm1\},\ a_i\neq b_i, \] over an algebraically closed field. We prove that $I$ is weakly NND if and only if $\overline I=\mathfrak{m}^2$, if and only if the given generators form a regular sequence, and if and only if an explicit combinatorial condition on the pair (support pattern, sign pattern) holds: no nonempty subset $S\subseteq\{1,\dots,n\}$ is simultaneously closed for the support data and sign-trivial for the associated lattice of relations. The last equivalence rests on a solvability criterion for systems of monomial equations over a divisible abelian group, in the spirit of Eisenbud and Sturmfels. As an application, we classify all such ideals for $n=3$.

Operator Algebras and Their Applications

We introduce a new class of commutative associative algebras whose structural constants are linear operators acting in a linear topological space. An analogue of the theory of monogenic functions is developed for such algebras. It is shown that the components of monogenic functions satisfy second-order operator-differential equations. This approach provides a constructive method for obtaining solutions of various partial differential and integro-differential equations. Several illustrative examples are presented.

On the existence of the maximal ideal in the set of associated primes of monomial ideals

In this paper, we investigate the behavior of associated primes of powers of monomial ideals, with particular emphasis on the presence of the maximal ideal and the phenomenon of fluctuation. We establish criteria for determining when the maximal ideal belongs to the set of associated primes of powers of monomial ideals in $K[x,y,z]$, and provide examples illustrating its appearance and disappearance among the associated primes of successive powers. Furthermore, we prove that for every $n\geq 3$, there exist infinitely many monomial ideals in $K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ whose powers exhibit fluctuations in their sets of associated primes. Finally, we construct infinitely many examples of nearly normally torsion-free (respectively, co-nearly normally torsion-free) monomial ideals that fail to satisfy the persistence (respectively, copersistence) property.

Graded Ehrhart theory for hypersimplices

We prove that the $q$-Ehrhart series of a hyperplane slice of a cube is a rational function with an explicit denominator that satisfies $q$-reciprocity, confirming a conjecture of Reiner and Rhoades for these polytopes. To do this, we find a generating set for the orbit harmonics ideal, which also yields the Hilbert series and graded Frobenius characteristic of the associated quotient. We further show that the harmonic algebra of a hypersimplex $\Delta$ is generated as an algebra by the harmonic space of $\Delta$ using structural results on 2-factors of regular multigraphs. In particular, the harmonic algebra is finitely generated, giving a second proof of rationality.

Disjoint and nearly disjoint sums of matrix multiplication tensors and their centroids

This paper addresses centroids, which are fundamental invariants of tensors. Our main results are as follows: (i) The construction of explicit tensors with very large centroids, whereas previously it had been conjectured that none such exist. (ii) An upper bound on the dimension of the centroid that is essentially attained by our examples. (iii) The development of a geometric technique to write down border rank decomposition of tensors using centroids and "extended centroids". (iv) The technique is applied to tensors of this paper to prove they are of minimal border rank. The technique is versatile and enables us to geometrically derive and improve upon previous ad hoc decompositions. (v) The construction of symmetric tensors with large centroids and proof that they are wild in the sense of Buczyńska-Buczyński. Our results also pave the way for new upper bounds on the exponent of matrix multiplication. The geometric technique also constructs new "better" tensors for Strassen's laser method from old, and we apply this to the tensors of Strassen and Schönhage to get better tensors in the sense that they give better upper bounds on the exponent than the original tensors.

Boxicity and Threshold Dimension of Zero Divisor Graphs

The zero divisor graph $\Gamma(R)$ of a finite commutative ring $R$ has as vertices the non-zero zero divisors of $R$, with an edge between two elements exactly when their product is zero. We determine the boxicity and threshold dimension of $\Gamma(R)$ for two classes of finite commutative rings: reduced rings and quotients of principal ideal domains. Our proofs use a new combinatorial gadget, the integral covering graph, that captures the structure shared by both ring families and generalizes the disjointness graph on subsets of $[n]$, where two subsets are adjacent if and only if they are disjoint. In doing so, we answer two questions recently posed by L.~Sunil Chandran and Suraj Kumar Sahoo in Boxicity of Zero Divisor Graphs, Discrete Applied Mathematics 391 (2026).

On the weak Lefschetz property of Artinian Gorenstein algebras of codimension three in arbitrary characteristic

Let $\mathsf k$ be a field, $S=\mathsf k[x,y,z]$, and $R=S/I$ be a standard graded Artinian Gorenstein $\mathsf k$-algebra of codimension three. The $h$-vector of such an algebra is known to be symmetric and unimodal. Miró-Roig proved that if $\mathsf k$ is algebraically closed of characteristic zero and the $h$-vector of $R$ has at least three peaks, then $R$ has the weak Lefschetz property. In this article, we extend this result to any infinite field of arbitrary characteristic, using a different, elementary, and more direct argument. In particular, we recover Miró-Roig's theorem without the hypothesis that $\mathsf k$ is algebraically closed. Along the way, we also prove a statement of independent interest that holds over any field: if the $h$-vector of $R$ has at least two peaks, and if $s$ is the largest degree of a peak, then the elements of $I$ of degree at most $s$ have no common factor.

Linear Independence of Polynomial Compositions and Identifiability of Deep Neural Networks

Motivated by theoretical problems in deep learning, we conjecture that post-composing a fixed number of pairwise distinct nonconstant polynomials with a generic polynomial of sufficiently large degree yields linearly independent polynomials. This generalizes Newman–Slater's theorem on powers of polynomials. We establish several cases of this conjecture and its origin-passing variant: We prove the result for two polynomials, and for an arbitrary number of polynomials when their degrees are bounded. Furthermore, we show how the conjecture implies a complete understanding of the identifiability (i.e., parameter symmetries) of deep fully connected neural network architectures with generic polynomial activation functions. In particular, for network architectures with layer-specific activations of increasing degree, our established versions of the conjecture fully characterize the set of parameters yielding the same end-to-end network function. As a special case, we fully resolve the identifiability of shallow polynomial networks.

Comparing v-numbers of symbolic and ordinary powers of squarefree monomial ideals

Let $I$ be a squarefree monomial ideal, and let $d$ denote the maximum degree of a minimal generator of $I$. We prove that \[ v(I^t)\le v(I^{(t)})+(t-1)(d-1) \] for all $t\ge1$, where $I^{(t)}$ denotes the $t$-th symbolic power of $I$. In particular, this bound does not depend on the number of variables in the ambient polynomial ring. On the other hand, for every fixed exponent $t\ge2$, the difference \[ v(I^{(t)})-v(I^t) \] can be arbitrarily large. Finally, we determine the $v$-numbers of the ordinary and symbolic powers of edge ideals of paths and cycles.

Polynomial extensions do not preserve the strong finite type property

Arnold introduced the strong finite type (SFT) property in 1973 while studying the dimension of power series rings. For several classes of rings, polynomial extension is known to preserve the SFT property, but the general question remained open. We answer it negatively by constructing an SFT ring $R$ such that $R[X]$ is not SFT.

Reduction numbers for witnesses to the generalized Loewy length

Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring. In this paper, we find the reduction number $r_{z}(\mathfrak{m}^d)$ of $\mathfrak{m}^d$ with respect to a witness $z\in \mathfrak{m}^d \setminus \mathfrak{m}^{d+1}$ to the generalized Loewy length $\text{g}\ell\ell(R)$ for several infinite families of hypersurfaces $\left\{(R,\mathfrak{m}) \right\}$. For every principal reduction $w$ of $\mathfrak{m}^d$, we have $\text{g}\ell\ell(R) \leq d(r_{w}(\mathfrak{m}^d)+1)$. We give examples of families $\left\{ (R,\mathfrak{m}) \right\}$ such that $d(r_{z}(\mathfrak{m}^d)+1)-\text{g}\ell\ell(R)=0$ and $d(r_{z}(\mathfrak{m}^d)+1)-\text{g}\ell\ell(R)=1$. In particular, we prove that for every prime $p$, there are local hypersurfaces $R$ over $\mathbb{F}_p$ such that $d(r_{z}(\mathfrak{m}^d)+1)-\text{g}\ell\ell(R)=0$ and $d(r_{z}(\mathfrak{m}^d)+1)-\text{g}\ell\ell(R)=1.$ We also prove that the difference $d(r_{z}(\mathfrak{m}^d)+1)-\text{g}\ell\ell(R)$ can vary independently of $\text{g}\ell\ell(R)-e(R)$.

Multi-graded generic initial ideals, regularity, and the optimal colorful fractional Helly theorem for $d$-Leray complexes

A celebrated result of Bayer and Stillman from 1987 states that for a homogeneous ideal $I$ of a polynomial ring $S$, the regularities of $S/I$ and $S/\textrm{GIN}(I)$ are the same under the reverse lexicographic monomial ordering, where $\textrm{GIN}(I)$ is the generic initial ideal. If $R$ is a polynomial ring whose variables are subdivided into disjoint blocks of variables $X_1,\dots,X_c$, there is a natural multi-grading on $R$, and one can analogously define a multi-graded version of the generic initial ideal for any multi-homogeneous ideal $I$ of $R$. However, the full strength of the Bayer–Stillman Theorem fails in the multi-graded setting; there are multi-homogeneous ideals $I$ such that the regularities are not preserved after passing to the multi-graded generic initial ideal no matter the choice of monomial ordering. We prove lower bounds on the regularity of $R/I$ in terms of almost regular sequences of the multi-graded generic initial ideal of $I$ restricted to each block of variables. Again, we use the reverse lexicographic monomial ordering, but interestingly, the lower bound result requires a particular choice of ordering on the variables. As an application, we prove the optimal fractional Helly theorem for $d$-Leray simplicial complexes, a problem stemming from the work of Kim in 2017.

Some results on null ideals of finite rings

For a finite associative unital ring $R$, the null ideal of $R$ is the collection of polynomials with coefficients from $R$ that send each element of $R$ to zero under evaluation. It was conjectured that the null ideal of $R$ is always a two-sided ideal of its overlying polynomial ring. The conjecture was proved to be false with the construction of a subring of $4 \times 4$ upper triangular matrices over $\mathbb{F}_2$ for which the null ideal is not two-sided. The Jacobson radical of this counterexample ring has nilpotency 4. We prove that if the Jacobson radical of $R$ has nilpotency at most 3, then the null ideal of $R$ is two-sided. By extending the known counterexample ring, for each $n \geq 5$ we present a ring for which the null ideal is not two-sided, and the Jacobson radical has nilpotency $n$.

De Morgan's Laws in Tensor-Triangular Geometry

There is an isomorphism between the frame of radical thick tensor ideals of an essentially small tt-category and the frame of open sets of the Hochster dual of its Balmer spectrum. This isomorphism allows us to compare topological properties of the latter with tt-geometric properties of the former. We use this to give an intrinsic definition of those tt-categories which satisfy a variant of the second De Morgan law, and furthermore give a construction for producing such tt-categories.

Contravariantly finite resolving subcategories over commutative local rings are trivial ones

We show that a contravariantly finite resolving subcategory over a henselian local ring must be the subcategory of free modules or the whole module category or the subcategory of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules. This removes the Gorenstein assumption from a theorem of Takahashi. We also show that a resolving subcategory of finite type other than the subcategory of free modules must be the subcategory of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules. As a consequence, every Cohen-Macaulay local ring of finite CM type is uniformly dominant, thereby establishing a stronger form of a conjecture of Takahashi.

We give a finite criterion for generation in Rees multiplicity one in terms of analytic spreads of projected lattice ideals and zero divisors in the associated graded ring. We apply this criterion first to fake weighted projective spaces, proving that multiplicity-one generation is equivalent to $I_X$ being a complete intersection. For projective toric surfaces, we prove that multiplicity-one generation holds if and only if it holds for every Picard-number-one toric surface dominated by $X$.

Jordan Blocks, Differential Traces, and Colon-Ideal Noncontainment over Noetherian Quotients

Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero, let $R$ be a commutative $k$-algebra, let $I$ be a proper ideal of $R$, and assume that $A=R/I$ is Noetherian. We prove that if $a=[f]$ in $A$ is nilpotent and $d_{A/k}a=0$, then $I:f$ is not contained in $(I,f)$. If $R$ is local with maximal ideal $\mathfrak n$, then $I:f$ is not contained in $(I,f)+\mathfrak n(I:f)$. As applications, we prove the isolated hypersurface case in arbitrary dimension and extend the conclusion to non-isolated critical loci on smooth varieties. Finally, we exhibit a five-variable isolated singularity satisfying $J_f:f\subseteq\overline{J_f}$, thereby disproving the integral-closure strengthening.

Fröberg's Conjecture for Quintics and Septics in Four Variables

Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero and let $S=k[x_1,x_2,x_3,x_4]$. We prove Fröberg's predicted Hilbert series for ideals generated by $r$ general forms of equal degree $d$ for every $r\geq1$ in each of the two cases $d=5$ and $d=7$. Relative to the classical cases $r\leq5$ and the equal-degree theorem through degree $d+2$ of Boij–Dannetun–Lundqvist, the generator-count ranges requiring new input are $6\leq r\leq11$ for quintics and $6\leq r\leq21$ for septics. The proof reduces each slice to finitely many endpoint ranks of Macaulay multiplication matrices. For quintics, ten exact endpoint computations based on twenty-one sparse forms suffice. For septics, a nested family of 120 integral forms supplies fifteen endpoint computations. In every endpoint certificate for these new ranges, an explicitly recorded maximal minor is nonzero modulo $2$, hence is a nonzero integer. The case $r=5$ is the classical strong Lefschetz instance; for quintics we also record a matching modular rank and Koszul bound. Zariski openness then gives the result over every characteristic-zero field. The unrestricted Fröberg conjecture remains outside the scope of the paper. The main results of this paper were obtained through a generative-AI workflow using OpenAI GPT-5.6 Sol, Anthropic Claude Fable 5, and Grok 4.6. Further details appear in the disclosure at the end of the paper.

On exceptional cliques in matrix rings

We study the notion of exceptional clique, a subset of a ring such that the difference of any two distinct elements of the subset is invertible. Motivated by applications in cryptography, our main focus is to determine the largest size of an exceptional clique in the ring $Mat_{n\times n}(\mathbb{Z})$ of square $n\times n$ matrices over the integers, for every $n$. We obtain several results for the question above, both in the general case and the “commutative” case where we additionally require that the elements in the clique commute with each other. As highlights, we prove that, at least for some values of $n$, the largest exceptional cliques in $Mat_{n\times n}(\mathbb{Z})$ are necessarily non-commutative; we then show that for an infinite family of $n$, there are non-commutative exceptional cliques of size $n^2$, and that for every $n$ there are commutative exceptional cliques of size $\frac23 n+O(n^{\theta})$, for a constant $\theta>\frac{11}{20}$.
