Mixture Density Networks for Neutrino Reconstruction at Hadron Colliders

Neutrino momentum reconstruction at hadron colliders is intrinsically ambiguous because the longitudinal momentum is not directly observed. We study this problem in semileptonic $t\bar{t}$ events using \monster{} (Mixture of Neutrino Solutions with Transformer Event Representation), a mixture density network that predicts a multivariate normal mixture for the conditional distribution of neutrino momentum from reconstructed event objects. The model uses a Transformer-based event encoder and yields a sampling-free point estimate of the neutrino momentum from the closed-form density. On the public benchmark introduced with \nuflows, \monster{} reduces the 68th percentile of the three-momentum residual by 5% and the 95th percentile by 6% relative to the empirical-mode \nuflows{} baseline, with per-variable root-mean-square errors smaller by 2 to 9% at comparable bias, while running 2 to 8.5 times faster at inference, depending on the device and batch size. These results indicate that mixture density networks are a competitive alternative to normalizing flows for neutrino reconstruction.

CP violation in $B_{(s)}\to\phi K$ decays: Standard Model and isospin-dependent New Physics

The penguin-dominated $B\to\phi K$ decays provide sensitive probes of physics beyond the Standard Model. Interpreting them at increasing experimental precision requires control of doubly Cabibbo-suppressed hadronic contributions. Using a factorization approach, we obtain Standard Model benchmarks for the branching ratios and CP-violating observables, including the hadronic phase shift in $B_d^0\to\phi K_{\rm S}$. The $B_s^0\to\phi K_{\rm S}$ channel, in which the corresponding penguin effects are not Cabibbo-suppressed, offers additional insight into these contributions. Comparing the neutral and charged $B\to\phi K$ modes further allows the construction of isospin observables. We discuss their Standard-Model expectations and sensitivity to New Physics in the $I=0$ and $I=1$ sectors. The available data are consistent with the Standard Model, while leaving substantial room for New Physics contributions.

Kaluza–Klein Dark-Photon Mediation of Inelastic Dark Matter at LUX-ZEPLIN

We study a five-dimensional realization of endothermic dark matter motivated by the recent high-recoil LUX-ZEPLIN event. A pseudo-Dirac Standard-Model singlet fermion is localized in the extra dimension and couples to a bulk $U(1)_D$ gauge field. The same localization that suppresses a distant-brane Majorana operator and generates the inelastic splitting also controls the couplings to the Kaluza–Klein (KK) dark-photon tower, producing a localization-filtered mediator propagator. We organize the phenomenology around two representative mass–splitting points: an LZ benchmark, $m_\chi=1.10~\TeV$ and $\delta=365~\keV$, and an IceCube-motivated comparison point, $m_\chi=1.08~\TeV$ and $\delta=566~\keV$. The latter is used only to compare terrestrial and solar kinematics; the published IceCube bound is Higgsino-specific and is not directly imposed on our singlet KK model. At the LZ benchmark with $R^{-1}=0.30~\GeV$ and $m_0=0.10~\GeV$, the KK tower enhances the high-recoil xenon rate by a factor of about four relative to a single dark photon at fixed microscopic coupling. The LZ point lies just below the terrestrial halo speed ceiling, whereas the $566~\keV$ comparison point is inaccessible to ordinary xenon scattering and instead lies in a kinematic regime accessible to solar capture; any neutrino constraint on the present singlet model remains dependent on its capture and annihilation dynamics. The characteristic prediction of the extra-dimensional construction is therefore a correlated interplay of localization, KK spectral distortion, and inelastic kinematics.

First-Principles Determination of the QCD Contribution to the Axion-Photon Coupling Using Domain-Wall Fermions

The axion-photon coupling, crucial for experimental axion searches and tests of the strong CP solution, receives a substantial model-independent contribution $\mathcal C_{\rm QCD}$ from QCD dynamics. Next-to-leading-order chiral perturbation theory (NLO ChPT) in different frameworks has yielded puzzling discrepancies of up to $8\%$, motivating precise first-principles calculations. We present an independent lattice QCD determination using a method complementary to the recent background-field calculation. Computing pseudoscalar-to-two-photon three-point functions and exploiting anomalous Ward identities, we separate $\mathcal C_{\rm QCD}$ into an exact anomaly contribution and a light-quark-mass-suppressed correction. The latter is computed using domain-wall fermions, whose excellent chiral symmetry strongly suppresses discretization effects. Working on two near-physical $N_f=2+1$ ensembles with continuum extrapolation, we obtain $\mathcal C_{\rm QCD}^{\rm IS}=1.619(30)$ (isospin-symmetric), $\mathcal C_{\rm QCD}^{\rm IB}=0.347(22)$ (isospin-breaking), and $\mathcal C_{\rm QCD}=1.965(35)$ in total. While direct comparisons with published NLO ChPT predictions reveal apparent tensions, we identify their sources and show that the ChPT results can be reconciled with our lattice determination. Our result provides a first-principles benchmark for the QCD contribution to the axion-photon coupling and a quantitative test of competing ChPT descriptions.

Benchmarking Nucleon Production in Hadron Interactions Relevant for GeV-scale Neutrino Experiments

In neutrino scattering experiments, the emitted final state particles are essential for identifying interaction channels and reconstructing neutrino energies. During intranuclear propagation, neutrino-induced hadrons can interact with surrounding nucleons, altering both the number of final state particles and detectable energy depositions. As a result, neutrino experiments rely on hadron-nucleus scattering models to simulate these nuclear effects. This paper explores nucleon production predicted by hadron scattering models for common hadrons in neutrino experiments, specifically nucleons and pions. We investigate these models with simulations from the GENIE neutrino event generator, which includes implementations of Geant4 Bertini Cascade and INCL++. For popular target nuclei, we find that the number of emitted nucleons for mesonless hadron interactions can be parameterized by simple Gaussian and exponential decay functions. We present these relationships and provide reweighting tools for addressing the hadron scattering model spread in both visible energy and final state nucleon multiplicities.

First measurement of the forward rapidity dependence of $W$ boson transverse helicity fractions

The transverse helicity fractions of $W$ bosons are measured as a function of the $W$ boson rapidity, $y_{W}$, in the range $0 \leq y_{W} \leq 5$ using $W\to\mu\nu_{\mu}$ decays in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV recorded by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.1$ fb$^{-1}$. The fractions are extracted from a template fit to the muon transverse momentum and pseudorapidity. The results show a strong rapidity dependence and agree with next-to-leading-order Standard Model predictions, providing the first determination of the transverse helicity fractions of $W$ bosons in the forward region.

Resurrecting Electroweak Dark Matter via Type-II Seesaw in light of recent LZ Event

The recent observation of the high-energy nuclear recoil event LZ230616 with a recoil energy around 248 keV provides an interesting possibility to probe inelastic doublet dark matter (iDM). However, the electroweak doublet DM scenarios face strong constraints from solar DM capture for DM masses around the TeV scale which give rise to correct thermal relic density. In this work, we revive the inelastic doublet DM (iDM) scenario via type-II seesaw. In particular, we consider an inert lepton doublet (ILD) DM. While the minimal ILD scenario gives the correct relic abundance around the TeV scale, it is strongly constrained by direct detection and solar DM capture. In the type-II seesaw, the presence of the scalar triplet generates the required mass splitting and provides additional annihilation channels, allowing the correct relic abundance for much larger DM masses. The larger DM mass also helps evade the solar capture and indirect detection constraints. Additionally, the scalar triplet gives sub-eV neutrino masses required by the oscillation data.

Searching for Axions from Atmospheric Kaon Decays

Cosmic-ray interactions in the Earth's atmosphere produce copious secondary mesons, providing a natural laboratory for searches for new physics. We investigate the atmospheric production of axions through the rare kaon decay $K^{+}\rightarrow\pi^{+}a$. If sufficiently long-lived, these axions can reach large underground detectors such as Super-Kamiokande and IceCube and decay through the diphoton channel, $a\rightarrow\gamma\gamma$. Using data from Super-Kamiokande and IceCube, we derive constraints on the axion decay constant $f_a$ for masses up to $m_a\sim 350~\mathrm{MeV}$. We demonstrate that atmospheric kaon decays provide a novel probe of axion parameter space, yielding constraints complementary to existing bounds.

Test of lepton flavor universality with $\bar{B} \rightarrow D^{(*)} \tau^{-} \bar{\nu}_{\tau}$ and $\bar{B} \rightarrow D^{(*)} \ell^{-} \bar{\nu}_{\ell}$ decays at Belle II

We test lepton flavor universality with a measurement of the branching-fraction ratios $R(D^{(*)}) \equiv \mathcal{B}(\bar{B} \rightarrow D^{(*)} \tau^{-} \bar{\nu}_{\tau})/\mathcal{B}(\bar{B} \rightarrow D^{(*)} \ell^{-} \bar{\nu}_{\ell})$, where $\ell$ denotes an electron or muon. The analysis uses $387\times 10^6$ $\Upsilon(\mathrm{4S})$ decays collected with the Belle II detector in energy-asymmetric $e^+e^-$ collisions. One $B$ meson is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode, while the other is reconstructed either in $\bar{B}\rightarrow D^{(*)}\tau^{-}\bar{\nu}_{\tau}$, with $\tau^- \rightarrow \ell^- \bar{\nu}_{\ell}\nu_{\tau}$, or in $\bar{B}\rightarrow D^{(*)}\ell^{-}\bar{\nu}_{\ell}$. We extract the signal from the distributions of the residual calorimeter energy and the squared mass of the undetected particles, obtaining $R(D^{*}) = 0.242 \pm0.019(\mathrm{stat}) \pm0.016(\mathrm{syst})$ and $R(D) = 0.439 \pm 0.055(\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.046(\mathrm{syst})$. These results are consistent with both the standard model predictions and previous measurements, and constitute the most precise determination of $R(D^{(*)})$ with hadronic tagging.

Observation of the doubly charmed baryon $\varOmega^+_{cc}$

A search for the doubly charmed baryon $\varOmega^+_{cc}$ in the $\varOmega^0_c\pi^+$ decay channel is performed using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $6.3\text{fb}^{-1}$, collected with the upgraded LHCb detector in 2024 at a center-of-mass energy of 13.6$\text{TeV}$. A peaking structure with a global significance of $8.7\sigma$ is observed in the $\varOmega^0_c\pi^+$ mass spectrum, where the $\varOmega^0_c$ baryon is reconstructed in the $pK^-K^-\pi^+$ final state. The structure is consistent with originating from a weakly decaying particle and is identified as the doubly charmed baryon $\varOmega^+_{cc}$. Its mass is determined to be $3725.9 \pm 1.0 \,(\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.2 \,(\mathrm{syst}) \pm 0.4 \,(\mathrm{lifetime}) \pm 0.6 \,(\mathrm{ext})\,\text{MeV/}c^2$, where the third uncertainty arises from the dependence of the selection-induced bias on the unknown $\varOmega^+_{cc}$ lifetime, and the fourth is due to the uncertainties on the masses of the $\varOmega^0_c$, $\varXi^+_c$, and $\varXi^{++}_{cc}$ baryons.

Proof-of-Concept and User Perspective on Photon-to-Digital Converter Applications in Particle Physics

Photon-to-Digital Converters (PDCs) are photosensors with single photon resolution and large dynamic range that digitise the output of individual single-photon avalanche diodes directly on-chip, offering potential advantages with respect to analogue Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPMs). In this work, we assess the PDC technology from the perspective of particle physics, using early, low-coverage PDC prototypes for proof-of-concept studies in calorimetry and tracking. Under simple, but extrapolable, detector conditions, we qualitatively compare PDCs with SiPM-based systems to illustrate their potential in terms of detector performance and readout. As the first application of this technology to particle physics instrumentation, we place particular emphasis on the user perspective, reporting on the practical experience of operating PDCs, from setup and calibration to data handling, and highlighting the relative ease of integration compared to conventional SiPM readout. We discuss the potential of PDCs to address key challenges in large-scale instrumentation, and their prospective integration into next-generation high-energy physics experiments.

Search for resonant and nonresonant production of pairs of dijet resonances with b jets in the final state in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for pair-produced dijet resonances of identical mass, each decaying into a bottom (b) quark and a light-flavor quark. The search uses a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 136 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the CMS detector in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. Results are presented separately for nonresonant production and for the case where the four-jet production proceeds via an intermediate resonant state. Upper limits are reported on the production of four-jet and dijet resonances with b jets in the final state. This is the first LHC search for resonant production of pairs of fully resolved dijet resonances with b jets in the final state, in which all resonances considered correspond to non-standard-model states. For nonresonant production, the most significant excess occurs at an average dijet mass of 1.0 TeV, with a local significance of 2.1 standard deviations. Additionally, the results exclude pair production of top squarks with masses between 0.5 and 0.8 TeV, extending previous searches for $R$-parity-violating decays to strange and b quarks. In the search for resonant production, the most significant excess occurs at a four-jet resonance mass of 3.1 TeV and a dijet resonance mass of 1.3 TeV, with a local significance of 2.6 standard deviations. The results are also used to set limits at 95% confidence level on the diquark-to-diquarks model and exclude the heavier diquark masses between 2 and 7 TeV.

Dark photons in exotic Higgs boson decays at FCC-ee

A prospective search for dark photons decaying into collimated, displaced muon pairs is presented for the electron-positron stage of the Future Circular Collider, FCC-ee. Assuming the full luminosity of the Higgs run at 240 GeV, the study probes a broad range of dark photon masses and couplings. The signature comprises two jets from a Z boson decay and two muon pairs from dark photons produced in Higgs decays. A kinematics-based selection achieves zero background while retaining high signal efficiency. Expected limits are set on the Higgs boson branching ratio to dark photons as a function of the dark photon mass and coupling.

A method for enhanced gamma-proton discrimination with imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes

Purpose: Very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy is an important window to study the extreme astrophysical processes in the universe, and how to effectively distinguish between gamma photons and background signals (mainly protons) is a key technical challenge to realize very-high-energy gamma-ray detection. Spaceborne calorimeters record secondary particle spatial distributions, achieving a background rejection power of 10000-100000 near 1 TeV. Ground-based imaging Cherenkov telescopes measure Cherenkov photon angular distributions, yet they only reach a rejection factor of about 10 in this energy range, leaving substantial room for optimization. Methods: We use CORSIKA and sim_telarray to simulate H.E.S.S. detector responses. Photon emission positions are reconstructed from Cherenkov shower images. Inspired by analysis techniques for space-borne calorimeter, we propose new observables derived from the transverse distribution of Cherenkov photon emission positions to separate gamma-ray signals from proton backgrounds. We employ a likelihood-ratio method to combine single-telescope variables across multiple telescopes and compare its performance with conventional Hillas-based analysis. Results: The results show that observables built from the transverse distribution of Cherenkov photon emission positions are less sensitive to Cherenkov image size and outperform the Hillas width parameter for single-telescope gamma-proton discrimination. Furthermore, the likelihood ratio combining width yields substantially better performance than the conventional mean reduced scaled width: the improvement reaches roughly one order of magnitude near 1 TeV, and this enhancement remains above 50% for energies above 10 TeV.

Discriminating baryonium and final-state-interaction interpretations of $X(2356)$

We revisit the $X(2356)$ enhancement observed by BESIII in $e^+e^-\to\Lambda\bar\Lambda\eta$ from the viewpoint of near-threshold dynamics. Motivated by the possibility of light $\Lambda\bar\Lambda$ baryonium, we compare this interpretation with final-state-interaction (FSI) explanations within a minimal FSI-dressed pole framework. Fits of the pure-FSI, baryonium-like-pole, and mixed pole–continuum scenarios to the digitized BESIII spectrum identify the energy-dependent FSI description as providing the best balance between fit quality and model complexity. The extracted pole positions depend strongly on the amplitude parametrization, demonstrating the sensitivity of the baryonium interpretation to the treatment of the continuum. We discuss how decay channels, spin observables, and partner searches can provide complementary constraints on the dynamics underlying the enhancement.

Endpoint anatomy of the baryon–meson sum rule in $b\to s\nu\bar\nu$

Baryon-meson sum rules enable cross-checks among exclusive mesonic and baryonic measurements. Unlike their heavy-to-heavy counterparts, analogous heavy-to-light relations lack an explicit heavy-quark-symmetry origin. We investigate their origin in the $b\to s\nu\bar\nu$ system by studying the relevant helicity amplitudes at the two kinematic endpoints. Although the sum rule follows algebraically from the simple short-distance structure, its coefficient depends nontrivially on the hadronic dynamics. At maximum recoil, the coefficient for the daughter baryons ${\cal B}=\Lambda,\Xi$ is consistent with the approximate value $1/2$ within current form-factor uncertainties. At zero recoil, by contrast, a kinematic helicity projection enforces its exact vanishing. The fully integrated coefficients are numerically close to $1/4$. However, unlike the one-quarter coefficient in the heavy-to-heavy system, they are not local symmetry coefficients but integrated quantities shaped by the behavior between the two endpoints. This understanding may guide the construction of baryon-meson sum rules in more general heavy-to-light decays.

Probing the Effective HZ$\gamma$ Coupling via H$\gamma$ Production at FCC-ee

This work presents the first dedicated study of the $e^+e^-\rightarrow H\gamma$ production mode at the FCC-ee. The analysis exploits all foreseen FCC-ee running scenarios at and above the WW threshold. This study demonstrates that the $e^+e^-\rightarrow H\gamma$ process provides a novel and direct handle on the effective $H\gamma\gamma$ and $HZ\gamma$ couplings through production, complementary to measurements based on Higgs decays. By combining measurements of multiple Higgs decay channels and center-of-mass energies, we show that an overall precision of 15% is achievable on the effective $HZ\gamma$ coupling. In addition, unlike decay observables, this process is also sensitive to the relative sign of the coupling and allows a full resolution of the corresponding sign ambiguity. We compare the expected sensitivity to the projected bounds from direct measurements of the $\gamma\gamma$ and $Z\gamma$ branching ratios at the HL-LHC and FCC-ee, as well as projections from global fits in the SMEFT framework.

Endothermic Z'-Portal Dark Matter: LZ-LHC Complementarity

Motivated by the $2.6\sigma$ high-energy recoil event recently reported by the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) Collaboration, we consider an endothermic $Z^\prime$-portal Majorana dark matter framework and discuss the complementarity between the LZ event and LHC searches for a $Z^\prime$ resonance. As a concrete realization, we consider a gauged U(1) ${B-L}$ extension of the Standard Model. The phenomenology of the framework is essentially controlled by two free parameters: the U(1) ${B-L}$ gauge coupling $g_{BL}$ and the $Z^\prime$ boson mass $m_{Z^\prime}$. For a fixed $m_{Z^\prime}$, the observed dark matter abundance requires the dark matter mass to be near the $Z^\prime$ resonance, $m_{\rm DM} \sim m_{Z^\prime}/2$, and sets a lower bound on $g_{BL}$. Complementarily, LHC searches for a $Z^\prime$ resonance set an upper bound on $g_{BL}$. The parameter space allowed by the dark matter abundance and LHC constraints can account for the recent LZ event. The synergy between future $Z^\prime$ resonance searches at the High-Luminosity LHC and the LZ experiment may provide a test of this framework.

First Measurement of Differential Cross Sections in Kinematic Imbalance Variables with Electron Neutrino Interactions Using the MicroBooNE Detector

We report the first measurement of flux-integrated cross sections as a function of kinematic imbalance variables for electron neutrino interactions on argon. Kinematic imbalance variables, applied here to electron neutrino interactions for the first time, are particularly interesting due to their sensitivity to effects such as Fermi motion, multinucleon processes, and final-state interactions, providing a detailed lens to study neutrino-nucleus interactions. These measurements are performed using MicroBooNE's full dataset of $1.3 \times 10^{21}$ protons on target from the Booster Neutrino Beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The measured cross sections are compared to several neutrino event generator configurations, revealing tensions between these models and data in the regions that are expected to be less dominated by final-state interactions.

Line shapes of $\Omega(2012)$ production in the $\Xi \bar K $ and $\Xi \pi \bar K$ decay channels

We theoretically study the line shape of the experiment for $\Omega(2012)$ production in the $\Xi^- \pi^+ K^-$ and $\Xi^0 K^-$ decay modes, reflecting the $\Xi^* \bar K$ and $\Xi \bar K$ decay modes, from the perspective that the $\Omega(2012)$ is a molecular state dynamically generated from the interaction of the $\Xi^* \bar K $ and $\Omega \eta$, coupled channels with $\Xi \bar K$ as a decay channel. We show the consistency of the picture with the experimental mass distributions, giving support to the molecular picture for the $\Omega(2012)$ state. We also call the attention to the sensitivity of the results to the cut imposed on the $\pi \Xi$ invariant mass, and suggest a different method to obtain the ratio $R^{\Xi \pi \bar K}_{\Xi \bar K}$ of the three-body to two-body decay widths used so far as a test of the molecular picture. We stress that the direct comparison with the experimental mass distributions done here is a more stringent test of the molecular nature of the $\Omega(2012)$ state than the comparison of the ratio $R^{\Xi \pi \bar K}_{\Xi \bar K}$ which has been so far obtained using different criteria.

Mineral Detection of Neutrinos and Dark Matter 2026 Proceedings

The fourth "Mineral Detection of Neutrinos and Dark Matter" (MDvDM'26) meeting was held April 14-17, 2026 in Karlsruhe, Germany, hosted by the Institute for Astroparticle Physics (IAP) at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). These proceedings detail the contributions that were presented during MDvDM'26, illustrating the unprecedented progress in theoretical, computational and experimental studies towards the realization of the concept of mineral detectors. Mineral detectors represent an emerging particle detection concept that has risen in prominence in recent years due to the advent of modern computational and high-resolution microscopy techniques. Natural and synthetic crystals are capable of retaining microscopic damage features induced by nuclear recoils, which could be then read out with a variety of micrometer and nanometer resolution microscopy techniques. On laboratory time scales mineral detectors could be employed for reactor neutrino monitoring and dark matter detection, with the potential to measure the directions as well as the energies of the induced nuclear recoils. Uniquely, ancient natural crystals (so-called paleo-detectors) that have been recording nuclear recoils over geological timescales could be used for studying astrophysical neutrinos, cosmic rays, dark matter and heavy exotic particles, as well as the variation of their fluxes over our Galaxy's lifetime. In recent years the international MDvDM community has been successfully tackling the challenges associated with realizing the concept of mineral detectors, opening the pathway towards a fully fledged experimental program and potential future discoveries.

Particle Physics Driven by Quantum Technology - Quantum Simulations and Quantum Sensing

We review recent advances in particle physics enabled and motivated by the rapid progress of quantum technologies. The continued development of quantum computing toward large-scale, fault-tolerant systems has the potential to address dynamical problems that remain extremely challenging for classical computational approaches, opening new avenues for studying nonperturbative dynamical processes. Tabletop detectors and quantum-enhanced technologies have reached unprecedented sensitivities, enabling novel searches for ultralight particles, gravitational waves, and other physics beyond the Standard Model in parameter regimes previously inaccessible to conventional instrumentation. Taken together, these developments highlight a rapidly evolving landscape in which quantum technologies are beginning to reshape fundamental physics. We aim to synthesize recent progress and illuminate the opportunities they present for advancing particle physics in the coming years.

A comprehensive theory framework for perturbative calculations of $\delta_C$ in superallowed beta decays

The present high precision determination of $|V_{ud}|$ from superallowed beta decays of $J^P=0^+$, $T=1$ nuclei is largely built on top of the “standard” calculation of the isospin breaking correction $\delta_C$ to the Fermi matrix element, which assumes the splitting $\delta_C=\delta_{C1}+\delta_{C2}$, where $\delta_{C1}$ and $\delta_{C2}$ represent the “isospin mixing” correction and the “radial mismatch” correction, respectively. In this paper I show that this formalism violates the rule of nucleon basis independence, similar to the gauge invariance requirement in quantum field theory, therefore its outcome is inevitably subject to uncontrolled systematic errors. I further argue that the perturbative formalism is the only approach that allows the computation of $\delta_C$ at the precision level required for the test of the Cabibbo unitarity. Advancing from existing literature, I develop the full “generating function approach” to compute $\delta_C$ perturbatively, with connections to nuclear mass splittings and the isospin breaking in nuclear charge radii as theory benchmarks.

Investigation of low-lying $\Omega_b(1P)$ states in an unquenched coupled-channel framework

In this work, we study the unquenched effects on the low-lying $\Omega_b(1P)$ states with a coupled-channel equations. We reveal how the unquenched effects affect the $\Omega_b(1P)$ spectroscopy and component mixing. The numerical results indicate that the $J^P=1/2^-$ $\Omega_b(1P)$ state dominated by the $j_\ell=0$ configuration exhibits significant coupled-channel effects due to its $S$-wave coupling to the $\Xi_b\bar{K}$ channel, where $j_\ell$ denotes the total angular momentum of the light flavor degrees-of-freedom. In this scenario, the mass of this state may be shifted close to or below the $\Xi_b\bar{K}$ threshold, making the radiative and isospin-breaking channels kinematically allowed decay processes. The present analysis provides a coupled-channel perspective on the low-lying $\Omega_b(1P)$ spectrum and offers guidance for future experimental studies of excited bottom baryons.

Observation of double $s\bar{s}$ production in $e^+e^-$ collision at $\sqrt{s} = 3.08~\textrm{GeV}$

We report the observation of significant double-$s\bar{s}$ production in the $e^+e^-$ continuum, based on the measurement of prompt $\phi$ mesons produced in association with hadrons containing an $s$ quark or an $s\bar{s}$ pair. In an analysis of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected by the BESIII experiment at $\sqrt{s}=3.08~\textrm{GeV}$, the ratio $\sigma(e^+e^- \to \phi\ s\bar{s}+\textrm{anything}) / \sigma(e^+e^-\rightarrow\phi+\textrm{anything})$ is determined to be $(40.4\pm1.7_{\rm stat.}\pm1.5_{\rm syst.})\%$ by detecting and measuring $e^+e^-\to\phi + X(s\bar{s})$, where $X(s\bar{s})$ denotes an $\eta$ meson, an $\eta^{\prime}$ meson, or one of the strange-meson pairs $K^+K^-$, $K^+K^{*-}$, $K^-K^{*+}$, $K^0\bar{K}^{0}$, and $K^0\bar{K}^{*0}+\textrm{c.c.}$. The level of double-$s\bar{s}$ production is in line with the double-$c\bar{c}$ production reported by the Belle and \babar\ collaborations, for which theoretical calculations predict lower rates. The experimental measurement of double $s\bar{s}$ production at BESIII can shed light on the understanding of quark hadronization and QCD.

A heterogeneous and vectorized sequence for the HL-LHC full tracking reconstruction of the CMS experiment

This contribution presents the new baseline strategy for the Phase-2 tracking of the CMS experiment for online event reconstruction, and for the main iteration of offline tracking. This tracking sequence takes advantage of the combination of cutting-edge tracking algorithms that are either optimized for parallel execution on GPUs (Patatrack and LST), or vectorized for efficient CPU performance (mkFit). Such a combined approach offers an effective solution to deal with the unprecedented computational challenges caused by the large number of simultaneous collisions per bunch crossing expected at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The proposed combination not only reduces the computational resource requirements but also enhances the physics reach by incorporating displaced tracking and increasingly leveraging machine learning techniques.

Commissioning and Performance of the Time-of-Flight Detector for the T2K Neutrino Oscillation Experiment

The T2K ND280 Upgrade aims to reduce systematic uncertainties in measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters and improve sensitivity to the charge-parity (CP)-violating phase, $\delta_{\mathrm{CP}}$. A key component is the Time-of-Flight (ToF) detector, comprising six panels with 118 EJ-200 plastic-scintillator bars surrounding the Super Fine-Grained Detector (SuperFGD) and two High-Angle Time Projection Chambers (HA-TPCs). Each bar is read out at both ends by silicon photomultiplier arrays and digitised using SAMPIC waveform electronics. The ToF provides precise timing and particle-direction information for particle identification and rejection of backgrounds entering the tracker from outside. This article presents the detector design, construction, signal reconstruction, integration, commissioning, and performance. Dedicated single-bar measurements achieve a time resolution of approximately 130 ps and a longitudinal position resolution of 2.6 cm. After installation in ND280, cosmic-ray calibration yields an in situ single-bar time resolution of $169 \pm 1$ ps for Top-Bottom crossing events. Beam data clearly resolve the eight-bunch T2K spill structure, confirming synchronisation with the ND280 trigger and data-acquisition systems. The ToF has been successfully commissioned and operates stably within the upgraded ND280 detector.

Coverage Is Not Ordering: Ancillary Leakage and Representation Dependence in Covariance-Based Inference

A covariance matrix is often used as a compact surrogate for the statistical model of a measurement. We show that this replacement can change not only a fitted value or its uncertainty, but also the likelihood-ratio ordering of the experiment itself. In a tractable correlated-measurement model, the data separate into an informative component and an ancillary residual disagreement. Exact likelihood inference therefore does not use that disagreement, whereas data-dependent covariance matrices and Gaussian reconstructions after nonlinear transformations can reintroduce it into parameter inference. We quantify the resulting change by the probability mass of the symmetric difference of equally calibrated acceptance regions - the fraction of repeated experiments for which the confidence decision about a tested parameter value changes. In the small-uncertainty regime the ordering discrepancy is generically first order in the total relative uncertainty, whereas conventional and ancillary-conditioned coverage defects begin at second order. At 'coverage-blind' points the leading coverage difference vanishes while the ordering discrepancy remains nonzero. In a representative blind case with 10% total relative uncertainty, about 7.6% of experiments change their confidence decision despite exact calibration of both procedures. The same mechanism connects Peelle's Pertinent Puzzle to the classical literature on ancillarity and relevant subsets: a covariance approximation can manufacture inferential relevance for a goodness-of-fit statistic that is ancillary in the true model. We show directly how this changes the confidence interval reported for the same informative content, and extend the analysis beyond equal statistical uncertainties and beyond the two-measurement case.

Constraints on the Higgs boson total width from on-shell signal-background interference in the $H\to\gamma\gamma$ decay channel with $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

The total decay width of the Higgs boson, $\Gamma_H$, encodes all of its decay modes; any decay into particles beyond the Standard Model (SM) would increase $\Gamma_H$ above the SM prediction of 4.1 MeV. In this Letter, a direct, on-shell measurement of $\Gamma_H$ is reported, exploiting the interference between the resonant $H \to \gamma\gamma$ amplitude and the continuum diphoton background, which distorts the diphoton invariant mass distribution in a way that depends on $\Gamma_H$ without requiring assumptions on the Higgs boson couplings. Using 140 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the LHC, an observed (expected) upper limit of $\Gamma_H < 307$ (258) MeV is set at 95% confidence level, approximately 75 (63) times the SM prediction. Unlike indirect off-shell constraints on $\Gamma_H$, this measurement does not rely on assumptions about the Higgs boson couplings, providing a novel complementary probe sensitive to potential Higgs boson decays into new particles.
