Group Theory Climbs 31%, Without Any Help From the Dictionary

Group Theory took in 63 papers over the past week against a typical 48, and for once no single word can take the credit.

Group Theory (math.GR) logged 63 papers over the past week, up 31% on a typical 48 - a rise with no vocabulary ringleader, since the field's rising-word column came back empty.

Among the arrivals: 'Automorphisms of twisted Chevalley groups of type ${}^2E_6$ over local rings' and 'Quadratic fields of values of finite solvable groups'.

A third, 'Resolutions of orbifold generalised triangle groups', suggests triangles are getting complicated treatment too this time round.

Machine Learning (Statistics) rose further still, but it topped this edition back on 11 October and is apparently still working through the backlog, so today's billing goes to the group theorists instead.

WORD WATCH

The Week of 'Sinks'

15 papers in the past week, against 4 in a usual week.

15 papers used 'sinks' in the past week, more than three times the 4 of a usual week. Exhibit A: 'Before Attention Sinks Form: Hidden-State Geometry Reveals and Modulates Their Formation' (cs.LG).

It isn't listed. Yet.

STILL GOING

Machine Learning's Statistics Wing Hasn't Finished Rising

stat.ML topped this edition back on 11 October and is now running 54% over its typical pace, with company close behind.

Machine Learning (Statistics) took in 135 papers over the past week, up 54% on a typical 88, having first topped this edition on 11 October and shown no interest in slowing since.

Information Theory isn't far off the same mood, up 34% at 109 papers, and had its own turn on 16 October.

Data Structures and Algorithms climbed 30% to 106, having led on 17 October, while Networking eased in at a milder 22% rise to 58.

Four fields now running hot at once, which is either a trend or a coincidence large enough to resemble one.

TICKER TAPE · $VID

Video Leads Gainers as Antenna Takes a 15% Tumble

A split session: small gains up top, a much rougher ride at the bottom of the board.

$VID (video) led the day's gainers, up 2.9%, with $ALOY (alloy) up 1.0% and $PLSR (pulsar) up 0.8% trailing behind.

$ANTN (antenna) had the worse end of it, down 15.1%, with $ISAC (isac) off 8.2% and $CVRT (covariate) down 3.9% also marked down hard.

$AGNT (agent) kept its familiar post as the busiest counter on the exchange, with 611 hits in titles and abstracts, the figure its dividend is paid on at the bell.

FUND DESK · $ANTN

Sabbatical Rotation Fund Dumps $ANTN

Sabbatical Rotation Fund, the exchange's resident sector rotation fund, sold 4,776.00 credits of $ANTN (antenna).

Asked why, the fund said only: "Back from sabbatical when it's interesting."

Elsewhere on the fund desk: Citation Cartel Capital sold $ANTN and Sabbatical Rotation Fund sold $CVRT.

TITLE OF THE DAY

Today's Title to Savour: Consciousness, Upgraded

From q-bio.NC, a title that treats enlightenment as a parameter change.

The desk's pick from today's intake is 'Awakening as a Trait-Level Transformation of Consciousness', filed under q-bio.NC.

A title confident enough to treat awakening as a trait rather than an event, which is more than most Monday mornings manage.

QUIET CORNER

Computers and Society Goes Unusually Quiet, Down 45%

cs.CY took just 23 papers over the past week, well down on a typical 42, and it isn't alone in easing off.

Computers and Society (cs.CY) logged just 23 papers over the past week, down 45% on a typical 42.

Human-Computer Interaction kept it company, down 43% at 67 papers, with Audio and Speech Processing off 39% at 42.

Statistical Mechanics rounds out the lull, down 35% at 37 papers.

Four fields taking a collective breather while the rest of arXiv carries on regardless.

From the arXiv papers settled on Wednesday 14 October. Every figure is taken from the counts.
