Hold the Front Page: Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics Is Up 83%

89 new astro-ph.IM papers in the past week, nearly double a usual week's 49.

arXiv's Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics section (astro-ph.IM) took 89 new papers over the past seven days, nearly double the 49 a usual week brings. It is the biggest move of any field this week.

Read the abstracts and a vocabulary emerges: 'alma', all running well above their usual rates.

Among the new arrivals: 'The transformative power of ALMA2040 for mm-VLBI' (astro-ph.IM).

Nobody has admitted to anything.

BREAKOUT

Who Keeps Writing 'Richardson'?

19 papers in the past week, against 5 in a usual week.

Mentions of 'richardson' are up 300%: 19 papers in the past week against a usual 5. Case in point: 'Hypercube Richardson varieties from magic words'.

Not a listing, so for now this one is purely for the scientists.

SECOND WIND

Information Theory Keeps Climbing After Its Turn at the Top

cs.IT led this page on 16 October and has only picked up speed since, with three more fields keeping similar company.

Information Theory (cs.IT) logged 112 submissions, up 37% on its usual 82, having already had its moment leading this page on 16 October and showing no sign of stepping back.

Machine Learning (Statistics) matched it almost exactly, up 37% at 125 submissions.

Multiagent Systems, which led its own edition on 14 October, is still running hot at 42 submissions, up 35%.

Soft Condensed Matter rounds things out, up 31% at 64, proving the excitement isn't confined to anything with 'learning' in the name.

TICKER TAPE · $PLSR

Alloy Sheds 12.6% as Pulsar Leads the Gainers

A rough session for the materials corner, a brighter one for anything that glows in the dark.

$PLSR (pulsar) topped the gainers, up 5.5%, with $ACCR (accretion) up 4.1% and $CSMC (cosmic) up 3.8% not far behind. The astrophysics corner is having a good run of it.

$ALOY (alloy) had the worse end of the session, down 12.6%, with $ANTN (antenna) off 9.2% and $GRPH (graphene) down 4.5% also marked down hard.

$AGNT (agent) kept its familiar post with the most hits in titles and abstracts on the latest settled day, 658, the figure its dividend is paid on at the bell.

FUND DESK · $ANTN

Two Funds Agree on One Thing: Sell the Antenna

Sabbatical Rotation Fund and Citation Cartel Capital both dumped the word, three trades apiece, for strikingly similar sums.

Sabbatical Rotation Fund sold 4,776.00 credits of $ANTN (antenna), the largest single move of the day.

"A change of department is as good as a rest," the fund said, apparently moving on from antennas for good this time.

Citation Cartel Capital was close behind with two sells of its own, 4,767.88 credits and then 4,472.88 credits of the same word.

"Everyone's buying it, so we are too," the fund offered, which did not obviously explain why it was selling.

QUIET CORNER

Computers and Society Falls Quiet, Down 47%

cs.CY took just 22 submissions against its usual 42, and three more fields are keeping similarly low profiles.

Computers and Society (cs.CY) logged just 22 submissions, down 47% on its usual 42, the steepest drop on the board.

Audio and Speech Processing wasn't far off, down 44% at 38, and Human-Computer Interaction eased 39% to 70.

Statistical Mechanics rounds out the lull, down 31% at 39.

Four fields apparently deciding, independently, that this was the week to say less.

WORD WATCH

Mentions of 'Korean' Up 258%

17 papers in the past week, against 5 in a usual week.

Mentions of 'korean' are up 258%: 17 papers in the past week against a usual 5. The latest example: 'Thunder-DeID+: Boundary-Aware Korean De-identification from Court Judgments to Broader Sensitive Documents' (cs.CL).

It isn't on the board, which will annoy whoever spotted it first.

From the arXiv papers settled on Thursday 15 October. Every figure is taken from the counts.
