Authors Can't Stop Saying 'Layerwise'

18 papers used 'layerwise' in the past week, against 6 in a usual week.

Regular readers know which field is busy this week. Today, a word instead. Mentions of 'layerwise' are up 200%: 18 papers in the past week against a usual 6. See, for instance, 'Layerwise Error Attribution for Fast and Robust Mixed-Precision Post-Training Quantization'.

Not a listing, so for now this one is purely for the scientists.

Nobody has admitted to anything. "Nobody reads past the abstract," said one referee. "Least of all the authors."

THE COURTS

Inviscid Hauled Before arXiv on Charges of Excessive Turbulence Avoidance

The word appeared 16 times against a typical 6, and the bench was not impressed by its claims of innocence.

Inviscid appeared before arXiv today, charged with turning up in 16 papers where a typical sitting manages only 6, a rise of 146%.

The prosecution produced three exhibits: 'The Inviscid Limit in Uniformly Local Yudovich Spaces' (math.AP), 'Optimal Linear Inviscid Damping and Vorticity Depletion for Non-monotonic shear flows' (math.AP), and 'Weak-BV Stability and Inviscid Limits for Barotropic Flows with Outflow Boundary Conditions' (math.AP).

Counsel for the defence argued the word was merely describing flows with no viscosity, and could hardly be blamed for appearing wherever fluid dynamicists chose to look.

The bench reserved judgment, noting that frictionless behaviour, in a word as in a fluid, tends to spread.

No ticker was present to post bail.

WEATHER

Storm Warning Holds Over Statistics-Flavoured Machine Learning

The squall that led this page on Sunday hasn't blown through yet.

Machine Learning (Statistics): the storm that broke over this field on 11 October shows no sign of clearing. 134 papers logged against a typical 73, up 83%, the sharpest gust on the board.

Machine Learning: heavy weather continues in the main channel too. 1,026 papers against a typical 824, up 25%, enough to keep umbrellas up all week.

Artificial Intelligence: a steady front, having led the page itself on 12 October. 668 papers against a typical 572, up 17%.

Networking: lighter showers, 56 papers against a typical 48, up 17%, nothing to trouble shipping.

MARKETS · $PLSR

Pulsar Rises 7.3% as Unitary Takes the Day's Heaviest Fall

A clean split on the board: the astrophysics corner climbed, the quantum corner slid.

$PLSR (pulsar) led the day's gainers, up 7.3%, with $RDSH (redshift) up 1.0% and $FAIR (fairness) up 0.9% trailing well behind.

At the other end, $UNTY (unitary) fell 8.2%, the sharpest move either way today, with $SNOV (supernova) down 0.6% and $LENS (lensing) down 0.4% easing more gently.

Underneath it all, $AGNT (agent) kept its usual post as the busiest counter on the exchange, clocking 382 hits on the latest settled day, the figure its dividend is paid on at the bell.

FUND DESK · $UNTY

Citation Cartel Capital Sells Unitary, Twice, for Good Measure

One word, two trades, and a fund that never seems to tire of selling it.

Citation Cartel Capital sold 4,778.10 credits of $UNTY today, then came back for a second helping, offloading another 4,770.39 credits of the same word.

"Everyone's buying it, so naturally we're selling it," the fund did not quite say, though its trading log told much the same story.

Co-Author Network, meanwhile, sold 3,558.49 credits of $ISAC. "Guilt by association cuts both ways," the fund observed, unprompted.

COOLING

Statistical Mechanics Eases Off, Down 32%

41 papers landed against a typical 60, and three more fields are keeping it quiet company.

Statistical Mechanics (cond-mat.stat-mech) took in just 41 papers, down 32% on its typical 60.

Soft Condensed Matter (cond-mat.soft) wasn't far behind, down 28% at 36 papers, and Computers and Society (cs.CY) eased 27% to 31.

Representation Theory (math.RT) rounds out the quiet corner, down 23% at 33 papers.

Four fields, all taking the week off while the rest of arXiv shouts over them.

VOCABULARY

'Nonsingular' Is Having a Moment

19 papers in the past week, against 8 in a usual week.

'Nonsingular' turned up in 19 papers over the past seven days. A usual week manages 8. See, for instance, 'The price of regularity: core gradient instability in nonsingular dyonic black holes'.

There's no ticker for it. Somebody should do something about that.
