Machine Learning's Statistics Wing Posts the Week's Sharpest Climb

Machine Learning (Statistics) rose 68% on its usual pace, the biggest swing of any field on arXiv this week.

Machine Learning (Statistics) took in 115 papers, up 68% on its usual 68, enough to make it the fastest-moving corner of arXiv this week, ahead of fields many times its size.

The traffic includes 'Transformed Samplers with Variance Reduction' and 'Conformal Prediction under Partial Verification', both filed under stat.ML proper, plus a cross-listed entry from the brain-decoding crowd: 'SPD-MetaFormer is what you need for small-data brain decoding'.

"Small field, loud week," said one statistician, who insisted the discipline has always been this exciting and that everyone else is only now noticing.

WORD WATCH

'Echoes' Reverberates Through the Listings

15 papers used the word this week, against a usual 4.

'Echoes' turned up in 15 papers this week, well above its usual 4, a change of 329%. The word ranges freely: 'From Echoes to Evidence: Cooperative Fusion for Integrated Sensing and Communication' sits in cs.NI, while 'Gravitational-wave Echoes Beyond the Hubble Time from Quantum Black Holes' sits in gr-qc.

It isn't listed. Someone is leaving credits on the table.

STILL CLIMBING

Machine Learning Keeps Setting the Pace

Last Thursday's leading field is still running 48% above its usual week.

Machine Learning (cs.LG), which led this page on 8 October, shows no sign of slowing: 1,139 papers this week against a usual 768, a rise of 48%.

It isn't alone. Quantum Physics ran 39% above its usual pace, Artificial Intelligence 32%, and even Hardware Architecture, not normally a headline act, managed 30%.

Whatever conference is looming, it appears to be looming over several fields at once.

MARKETS · $PLYN

$PLYN Climbs 10.0% as $TOKN Sheds 10.3%

A quiet day for symmetry: the top gainer and the top loser moved by almost the same amount.

$PLYN (polynomial) led the day's gainers, up 10.0%, with $PLSR (pulsar) close behind at 8.1% and $UAV (uav) up 4.2%.

At the other end, $TOKN (token) fell 10.3%, $AGNT (agent) dropped 4.2%, and $XTAL (crystal) slipped 2.7%. Nobody on the desk claims to know why pulsars are suddenly fashionable while tokens are not.

$AGNT remained the busiest counter on the exchange regardless, with 519 hits across titles and abstracts on the latest settled day, the figure its dividend is paid on at the bell.

FUND DESK · $TOKN

Citation Cartel Capital Sells $TOKN

The biggest trade on the fund desk: Citation Cartel Capital sold 4,788.49 credits of $TOKN.

Asked why, the fund said only: "It's rising because we bought it."

Elsewhere on the fund desk: Citation Cartel Capital sold $AGNT and Citation Cartel Capital sold $AGNT.

OBITUARIES

Statistical Mechanics, Quietly, at 43 Papers This Week

Down 30% on its usual week, the field goes gently rather than vanishing.

Statistical Mechanics (cond-mat.stat-mech) managed 43 papers this week, down 30% on its usual 62. The field is not dead, the desk stresses, merely resting.

It is survived by Earth and Planetary Astrophysics, down 25%, Materials Science, down 22%, and General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology, down 21%, all keeping similarly subdued company this week.

Mourners are invited to submit a manuscript at their earliest convenience; the field will, as ever, pick back up when nobody is watching.

'Qudit' Turns Up in 18 Papers

18 papers in the past week, against 6 in a usual week.

Mentions of 'qudit' are up 177%: 18 papers in the past week against a usual 6. See, for instance, 'Susceptibility of qudit-qudit entanglement to quantum noise: insights from the negativity rank'.

It isn't on the board, which will annoy whoever spotted it first.
