Software Engineering Climbs 27% With No Word to Pin It On

cs.SE posted 144 submissions against a typical 113, and this time the vocabulary itself has nothing to say about why.

Software Engineering (cs.SE) logged 144 submissions this week, up 27% on its typical 113, the biggest move of any field on the board. Unusually, no single word drove it: the rising-words list came back empty.

The credit, such as it is, goes to the papers themselves. 'EVM-Anchored Provenance for AI-Assisted Code Evolution: A Smoke-Scale Deployment Report' sets the tone for a field increasingly keen to watch its own machinery.

'From Cosmetic to Structural: A Paired Experiment on Metric-Guided Agentic Refactoring' and 'Responsibility Boundaries for Agentic Systems: A Comparative Evaluation of Probabilistic Agentic Programming' round out the week's arrivals, both rather more interested in agents than architects.

A field can rise without a slogan, it turns out. This one just did.

BREAKOUT

'Facets' Is Suddenly Everywhere

18 papers in the past week, against 7 in a usual week.

'Facets' turned up in 18 papers over the past seven days. A usual week manages 7. The latest example: 'Equifacetted polytopes whose facets are products of simplices: The simplicial prism case' (math.CO).

Not a listing, so for now this one is purely for the scientists.

STILL RISING

Representation Theory Hasn't Finished Its Turn

The field that led the lead slot on 25 October is still climbing, up 26%, with three more corners of maths and physics keeping stride.

Representation Theory (math.RT) logged 54 papers this week, up 26% on its typical 43, having already had its moment at the top of the lead slot on 25 October and showing no sign of easing off.

Dynamical Systems (math.DS) is keeping similar company, up 23% at 92 papers.

Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics (astro-ph.CO), itself a recent headliner on 23 October, is up 18% at 67, and Mathematical Physics (math-ph) trails only slightly, up 17% at 56.

Four fields, two of them repeat performers, all declining to let the week settle down quietly.

THE EXCHANGE · $FLAVR

Flavor Rises 4.9% as Hamiltonian Takes a Battering

A pleasant morning for impurities and embodiment, a much rougher one for anything that used to sit still.

$FLAVR (flavor) led the day's gainers, up 4.9%, with $IMPUR (impurity) up 3.4% and $EMBOD (embodied) up 3.3% close behind.

$HAML (hamiltonian) had the worse end of it, down 7.9%, with $TOMO (tomography) off 2.0% and $UNTY (unitary) down 1.7% also marked lower.

$AGNT (agent) kept its usual post, with 445 hits in titles and abstracts on the day the bell paid dividends.

FUND DESK · $HAML

Citation Cartel Capital Sells Hamiltonian Twice Before Lunch

The crowd follower unloaded the word in two separate moves, while a co-author fund cleared out surgical in between.

Citation Cartel Capital sold 4,469.60 credits of $HAML (hamiltonian), the day's largest single move, then came back for a further 3,090.51 credits of the same word.

"It's rising because we bought it," a fund representative offered both times, which sat oddly beside all that selling.

Co-Author Network, meanwhile, sold 3,367.15 credits of $SURGL (surgical). "Guilt by association is still association," the fund said, apparently deciding the word's circle of co-authors had grown too wide.

QUIET CORNER

Quantum Physics Falls Quiet, Down 36%

quant-ph managed just 306 papers this week against its typical 480, with statistics, speech and algebra all keeping their heads down too.

Quantum Physics (quant-ph) logged just 306 papers this week, down 36% on its typical 480, the steepest fall on the board.

Machine Learning (Statistics) (stat.ML) eased 35% to 72, and Audio and Speech Processing (eess.AS) slipped 34% to 41.

Rings and Algebras (math.RA) rounded out the hush, down 34% at 27 papers.

Four corners of arXiv, apparently without consulting one another, decided this was a week to say less.

VOCABULARY · $LIQD

'Liquids' Is Having a Moment

20 papers in the past week, against 9 in a usual week.

'Liquids' turned up in 20 papers over the past seven days. A usual week manages 9. The latest example: 'Discrete time liquids' (cond-mat.str-el).

It trades as $LIQD, and its dividends follow the counts.

From the arXiv papers settled on Friday 23 October. Every figure is taken from the counts.
